House Evictions in Jerusalem and the Key under the Bed….

Last week, the United Nations called on Israel to end its policy of demolishing homes in East Jerusalem and to tackle a mounting housing crisis for Palestinians in the city. But house demolitions are not the only emergency that is affecting the Palestinian housing crisis: at the end of March the EU called on Israel to suspend eviction notices sent to Palestinian families in East Jerusalem, stating that they further threaten the chance for peace.

Glenn Greenwald Pounds the New Republic

Following on Kalash's post about the media's hypocritical love affair with Iran's imprisonment of Roxana Saberi, you have to read Glenn Greenwald's devastating rebuke to this myopic, selective advocacy of press freedom. He makes the same point as Kalash about the American government's detention of journalists, who have been held for years with no trial -- and with little more than a peep from the same blowhards having a fit over Saberi (with the exception of Nicholas Kristof, he notes).

MEMRI defines the Arab press
So MEMRI put out a special bulletin the other day about what it called "Criticism in the Arab Press" of Oabama's policies in Afghanistan. As soon as I saw the headlines I knew that this would provide me with yet another opportunity to bash MEMRI and to expose their slanted and skewed standards that are political through and through. I knew that what they refer to as "the Arab press" is going to be wildy unrepresentative of the Arab press. That propaganda outfit did not disappoint. Their sample of the Arab press included the following: the editor of the mouthpiece of Prince Salman (Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat), three columnists for Prince Khalid bin Sultan's mouthpiece (Al-Hayat), and the director of King Fahd's brother-in-law' s TV station (Al-Arabiyya) . When I saw that I learned of Arab press what I knew not before, and I learned of Israeli propaganda (and of Israeli-Saudi alliance) what I knew before. [end]

Western journalists upon meeting some Lebanese

It struck me last night. The body of articles on Lebanon by Zionist and right-wing Western journalists who have been invited and accommodated by the Hariri family (using a variety of names of various organizations that are funded by the family) is striking how they all sound the same. Not a single iota of dissent: they all see the situation in Lebanon in the same lense, which tells you why they were invited in the first place. Independent journalists would not have been invited and they would most certainly decline the invitation had they been invited by a family who has a large stake (along with Saudi Arabia) in the elections in Lebanon. The second point that struck me is that invariably those Zionist journalists are impressed by every one they meet. This stems from their racism: I mean yesterday the New Republic "journalist" who was one of the last recepient of this Hariri media junket even declared that the Hizbullah media director is "intelligent. " Notice that it is the White Man who decides whether a native is intelligent or not. They have such low opinion of the natives that they are shocked when they encounter a native that they deem to be intelligent. [end]

EuroPalestine, "Action Boycott Israel in Montigny, Paris Region"
This action was led by the New Anti-Capitalist Party (NPA), especially Omar Slaouti, who heads the NPA list in Île-de-France, as well as by Senator Alima Boumediene-Thiery (Greens), conducted in a clear, educational fashion, with the participation of many local politicians. The NPA walks the walk, demonstrating that the call for the boycott of Israel, launched by the Palestinian civil society and Israeli dissidents, is an integral part of its campaign for respect for law and justice in the world, including the Middle East. That is why EuroPalestine calls upon people to vote for the NPA in the next European elections and support the campaign of the candidates, like Omar Slaouti, who have the courage to put their words into practice. Scholar/Big- Muddy vet asserts that American support for Israel is mile wide, inch-deep

Alan Sabrosky, who states that he is a Marine veteran and graduate of the Army War College, at information clearinghouse: At present, a large majority of Americans support Israel, having been fed a steady diet for decades of Israeli "victimisation" in the face of Arab "barbarism." But that support is, as the saying goes in America, "a mile wide and an inch deep," and AIPAC and company know this, which is why they work so hard to filter what most Americans see, hear and read about the Middle East. But it is a filter that is starting to weaken — a difference that is reflected in growing criticism of Israel and of US support for it. Disrupt this pro-Israel filter, make historical events like the Israeli assault on the USS Liberty and the IDF's murder of a young American woman named Rachel Corrie household words in the US, bring images of ravaged Gaza into American homes, and watch the world start to change — because it can.

What is anti-Semitism
Is it anti-Semitic or merely factual to say that Hollywood is controlled largely by Jews? (Remember: Most of the big studio chiefs are Jewish.) Or to note (as some critics of the Iraq war did) that many of the neoconservatives who helped devise the war's intellectual rationale were Jewish -- and possibly harbored a dual loyalty to Israel? Or to point to the existence of a powerful "Israel lobby" that wields substantial influence on Capitol Hill?

No Military Solution for Iran or Palestine
The Current Discussion: Are Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Obama on a collision course over Iran and the Palestinian problem? What would be the consequences of a breach between the United States and Israel?  If Netanyahu and Lieberman continue on their course of denying Palestinians their right to self-determination, and continue denying that they have nuclear weapons while threatening to bomb Iran's civilian nuclear facilities, yes - this will bring Israel and the U.S. onto a collision course.  President Obama is trying to find a peaceful, negotiated solution to the Iran nuclear program. This is the only sensible way forward. If we have learned anything in the last 60 years is that there is absolutely no military or violent solution for Palestine or for Iran.

Israel's Cast Lead, Palestine's Sharpeville
It has been just over three months since Israel unilaterally declared an end to operation Cast Lead and withdrew its forces from the Gaza Strip following its 22 day onslaught there. According to the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), a total of 1,434 people were killed in the operation, approximately 960 of them civilians. Of these, nearly 300 victims were children. This, in addition to the 5000 plus who were injured, and the growing number of deaths due to the ongoing siege.

Letter from Gaza

For the twenty-three days that the Israeli bombardment of Gaza persisted, I would wake up at four a.m. and sit with yesterday's paper, then read the news online, then walk to the local newsagent and get the day's paper. Suddenly it would be lunchtime. I could not respond when asked what I thought, or 'Isn't it terrible?' I spent too long online looking at photographs and watching videos, reading articles, listening to interviews. On the fourth of January, a week after the bombardment started, a friend sent me a piece he had written on the assault. I read it and wrote a long email that every other day I would edit and revise. In the end I never sent it.

Lavrov urges states to accept Lebanon poll results

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged the international community Tuesday to accept the result of upcoming Lebanese elections, regardless of who wins. He added that the mistake that was committed when Hamas won the Palestinian elections a few years ago should not be repeated, a reference to international isolation of the Hamas government that many saw as prolonging and intensifying the Middle East conflict. In a statement to the Russian Interfax information services, he said "If the international community had acknowledged the victory of Hamas, the actions of Hamas would be different today."...He added that even if the Hizbullah-led opposition wins the elections, the Lebanese government would still participate in an upcoming international conference on the Middle East, which will be held in Moscow.

US Ambassador in Lebanon: with eggs and shoes

People in the village of Kfar Milki in Iqlim Tuffah in South Lebanon today heard that the US ambassador in Lebanon was planning to visit the public school in the village to brag about a fistful of dollars that the US had donated. Quickly (and typically) a group of women and children gathered outside of the school in the village armed with signs, eggs, and old shoes. They started chanting and saying that they may allow the ambassdor to visit the village if the US stops giving bombs to Israel. The ambassador heard of the noise and the commotion and decided to cancel the trip. This was based on a report on NBN.

Iraqi MPs' Demand Compensation for Israel's 1981 Strike

The Iraqi parliamentarians are taking steps to force Israel to compensate for its air strike on the Iraq's nuclear power plant in 1981. Iraqi MP Mohammed Naji Mahmoud is leading the push to sue Israel. Iraq deserves "billions of dollars" in damages, he said.
The parliament's foreign relations committee is reviewing UN Resolution 487 which was issued in June 1981 and stipulates that Israel compensates for its air strike on Iraq's Osiraq nuclear plant. "According to the international law, Iraq has the right to receive compensation from Israel," Asharq al-Awasat newspaper quoted Nasar al-Rubaie as saying. "We have called for a legislation to be passed in the parliament to force the Iraqi government to follow up the issue," he added.

The Bomb Iran Faction

There is clearly a faction of the power elite that is, and has for some years been pressing, for a U.S. military attack on Iran. It is not advocating a war, at least openly, or an occupation of that vast nation; rather, it is advocating an operation similar in concept to the Israeli attack on Iraq's French-built Osiraq nuclear reactor in 1981. In a word, it is both advocating an Israeli-like action and justifying it explicitly as one on behalf of Israel.
