Appointment of Madras High Court Judges

In exercise of the powers conferred by Clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint (i) Shri Justice Krishnaswami Chandru, (ii) Shri Justice V.Ramasubramanian, (iii) Shri Justice S.Mani Kumar, (iv) Shri Justice A.Selvam, (v) Shri Justice P.R.Shivakumar, (vi) Shri Justice G.Rajasuria, (vii) Shri Justice Thiruneelakantam Sudanthiram, (viii) Shri Justice Saminathan Nagamuthu, (ix) Shri Justice Shunmugavel Palanivelu, (x) Shri Justice K.K.Sasidharan, (xi) Shri Justice M.Venugopal, (xii) Shri Justice V.Periya Karuppiah, (xiii) Shri Justice R.Subbiah and (xiv) Shri Justice Meenakshi Sundaram Sathyanarayanan, Additional Judges of the Madras High Court, to be Judges of that High Court, in that order of seniority, with effect from the dates they assume charge of their respective offices.

Orders for purchase of 11185 buses by States placed under JNNURM
New Delhi: November 9, 2009
Orders for buying 11185 buses have been placed by various States under the one time economic measure of funding of buses by the Ministry of Urban Development to boost their urban transport under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). Government has sanctioned purchase of 15,260 buses for the various mission cities under JNNURM.
Maharashtra has placed purchase orders for 2230 buses, the highest number of fleet among the States followed by Delhi and Tamil Nadu with orders for purchase of 1600 buses each . The lot would consist of AC low-floor, non-AC low-floor, semi low-floor buses and mini buses. Andhra Pradesh has placed order for 1540 buses for four cities of Hyderabad, Tirupati, Vijayawada and Vishakhapatnam . Out of total no of buses for AP 1000 buses are meant for Hyderabad . Uttar Pradesh has ordered for purchase of 1350 buses and Uttrakhand for 145 buses. West Bengal has finalised purchase orders for 1300 buses and Kerala for 320 buses so far under the scheme. Madhya Pradesh has placed purchase orders for 175 buses, Chhatisgarh for 100 buses, Jharkhand for 240 buses, Rajasthan has ordered for 400 buses and Manipur for 25 buses so far.
Under the second stimulus package announced by the Government on 2nd January 2009, it had been decided that States would be provided assistance under the JNNURM for the purchase of buses in the form of grant. The financing is meant exclusively for city bus service and Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) for all Mission cities. The funding of buses under JNNURM will give a boost to automobile industry. The funding is shared by the Centre, States and the Municipal Bodies. The size of the Central allocation depends on the population density of the recipient Mission cities.

India and Japan to increase cooperation in peace-keeping, anti-piracy and disaster relief measures
New Delhi: November 9, 2009
India and Japan today expressed their firm determination "to take forward bilateral defence exchanges and cooperation in a meaningful way". In a Joint Press Statement issued at the end of a comprehensive review of Defence Cooperation issues at a meeting between the visiting Defence Minister Shri AK Antony and his Japanese counterpart Mr. Toshimi Kitazawa in Tokyo, the two sides expressed their commitment to 'contribute to bilateral and regional cooperation', such as, ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) in the field of peace-keeping, peace-building and disaster relief. The two Ministers held in-depth discussion on Defence Exchanges and Cooperation. Regional and International Security situation also came up for discussion at the meeting.
The two Ministers condemned terrorist activities and expressed their determination to enhance cooperation in the fight against terrorism. The two countries also recognized their mutual interest in the safety of sea-lines of communications and welcomed recent reinforcement of cooperation in the field of Maritime Security between the two Defence authorities as well as the inauguration of Japan-India Maritime Security Dialogue which was held in India last month. The two Ministers shared international concerns on piracy off the Coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden and expressed their support for international efforts of anti-piracy.
They also expressed their determination to accelerate bilateral discussions on various measures to further promote Defence Exchanges and cooperation through a Defence Action Plan, as envisaged between the Prime Ministers of the two countries in October last year. The two sides will develop such an action plan and hoped that the same would be signed during the visit of Prime Minister Hatoyama to India for the Annual Summit.
The two Ministers expressed their desire to hold annual meetings and expressed their expectation that the Second Defence Policy Dialogue will be held at the earliest mutually convenient time in India next year.
The two sides also reiterated the importance of strengthening Service-to-Service exchanges such as Staff Talks including Navy-to-Navy and Ground-to-Ground Staff Talks, as well as bilateral exercises between Japan Self Defence Forces and the Indian Armed Forces to enhance cooperation and core ability for maritime security operation and disaster relief.
Shri Antony was accompanied by a high-level delegation including the Defence Secretary Shri Pradeep Kumar, Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri Dr VK Saraswat and the Vice Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral DK Dewan.
