If
you thought it was impossible to win over fans across generations, for
batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, nothing has been impossible over the
last 20 years.
There is no secret, as
all that was needed was passion for the game, which has won the hearts
of even the leaders of corporate India.
It
did not take long for advertisers to latch on to Sachin, as they saw an
opportunity to ride his popularity and reach out to the middle class.
This opportunity looked, as an advertiser later said, andar se solid.
So, Sachin was the favourite among the most premium advertisers and was
working hard before the cameras for advertising campaigns too.
Advertisers and the cricket crazy public were now saying, almost as one: “Ye dil maange more”.
As
Sachin's stature grew on the cricket field, he sported the MRF logo on
his bat, among the first cricketers to do so. And when he decided to
change that sticker recently, it made headlines. And his fan club
multiplied with every innings he played.
With
over 17,000 runs in one-day internationals and nearly 13,000 in test
matches, there is almost no batting record that the little master does
not own. As they treat Sachin like god, fans would love to get one gift

Peoples’ Forum Challenges Governments
on Human Rights
Abuses against Migrants
(Athens, 1-5 November 2009) On the eve of a
global summit on migration, migrant communities from around Greece and the
world, converged into Athens to launch their own “Peoples’
Forum” and challenge the policies being deliberated. The 4th
Peoples’ Global Action on Migration, Development and Human Rights (PGA)
– organized by an international coalition of migrant groups in Greece
alongside migrant groups from around the world, human rights organizations,
trade unions, development NGOs and other civil society – criticized the
Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) for not heeding the critical
conditions migrants face, and exacerbating abuses against them.
The Global Forum on
Migration and Development, or GFMD, is an intergovernmental forum (a meeting of
governments) that takes place every year to discuss migration and development issues.
It is an informal, voluntary, state-led and non-binding forum that seeks to
address the multi-dimensional aspects, opportunities and challenges related to
migration and development and to foster action-oriented outcomes. The GFMD came
out of the recommendations of the United Nations High Level Dialogue on
Migration and Development held on September 14-15 2006. The first GFMD was held
in Brussels, Belgium on 10-11 July 2007. The
second GFMD was hosted by the Philippine government and was held in Manila from 27-30 October
2008. This year’s GFMD was convened in the midst of a worldwide economic
recession that has witnessed increasing crackdowns against immigrant
communities who have already been deeply impacted with loss of jobs in their
home countries and countries of destination.
The PGA was held
from 1 to 5 November at the Technopolis
Cultural Center
in the Gazi district of Athens, Greece.
Activities included large plenaries with world-renowned speakers, workshops,
cultural events, regional caucuses, sectoral summits, visits to local migrant
communities, public actions and demonstrations, and side meetings related to
the issues of migration, development and human rights. One of the workshops was
on the issue of ‘Portability of Social Security of Migrants’ and we
presented a paper on ‘Providing Social Security Protection to Migrant
Workers of Asia’ on November 3, 09 incorporating concept and campaign of
Social Security Now campaign.
Discussions in other
workshops were also centered on human rights, labour rights and social security
rights of migrant domestic workers, asylum seekers, irregular or undocumented
migrants and other vulnerable categories.

PIL in SC over MNS vandalism
NEWDELHI: A PIL petitioner on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court seeking action
against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) legislators indulging in
against another MLA for taking oath in Hindi.
Petitioner Salekh Chand
Jain had earlier filed a PIL against the violence indulged in by MNS activists
against north Indians and the apex court had issued notice on that PIL to the
Maharashtra government.
Mentioning its fresh application in the
pending petition, advocate Sugriv Dubey sought an early hearing on the petition
and the present application saying "if the streak of violence started by MNS
MLAs goes unpunished, then the nation will be divided into several parts on the
basis of languages".
Jain's PIL had accused MNS activists of killing
two doctor brothers -- Ajay and Vijay -- for refusing to close their clinic and
charged the police and Maharashtra administration of doing nothing to arrest the
accused.
"The representatives of MNS are committing offences and are
going scot free," the petitioner said and requested the court to direct the
Maharashtra government to bring to book those who were indulging in violence
inside and outside the assembly in the name of language.
MNS lawmakers turn into lawbreakers in Assembly
MUMBAI/THANE: The 12th legislative
assembly of Maharashtra got off to a violent start on Monday when four
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) MLAs
Abu Asim Azmi for taking the oath of office in Hindi and not in Marathi. The
tussle between Azmi and MNS chief Raj Thackeray on the Hindi-Marathi issue had
begun last week.
The incident, which has tarnished Maharashtra's
credentials as a progressive state committed to moderate politics, sent shock
waves through political circles. By the end of the day, the state assembly
passed a resolution suspending the four legislators - Shishir Shinde, Vasant
Gite, Ramesh Wanjale and Ram Kadam - for unruly behaviour, manhandling Azmi and
``misbehaving'' with PWP MLA Meenakshi Patil, a senior lady
member.
The suspension will last for four years, a severe penalty
which has no precedent in the annals of the Maharashtra legislature. Minister
for legislative affairs Harshavardhan Patil (Congress) moved the resolution
which was passed by a majority vote.
The state legislative assembly
began its three-day special session convened for oath-taking on Monday. As Azmi
strode up the dais and began to take the oath in Hindi, MNS MLA Ramesh Wanjale
rushed to the lectern and tried to snatch the microphone from him. Wanjale was
soon joined by his three colleagues. Unfazed, Azmi went through the oath-taking
exercise amid chaos.
The assembly began to resemble an `akhada' as
Kadam and Gite began to chase Azmi, while Meenakshi Patil, Baba Siddique
(Congress) and Harshavardhan Patil tried to shield him. In the melee that
followed, Gite and Kadam manhandled Azmi, while the assembly looked on stunned.
The suspension resolution came up at the end of the day as tempers in the
assembly ran high.
The incident was telecast live, which led to
violent protests from Samajwadi Party activists in Azmi's assembly
constituencies Bhiwandi and Shivaji Nagar-Mankhurd. Counter-protests by MNS
activists briefly created a fear psychosis in several parts of the
city.
The drama began when the ministers were being sworn in.
Nandgaonkar had tried to raise the issue of Azmi's taking oath by way of a point
of propriety, saying that certain members were trying to take the oath in Hindi
in violation of Article 220 and 385. However, protem speaker Ganpatrao Deshmukh
said the issue was not a propriety issue, and did not allow him to
speak.
Azmi was preceded by his colleague Abdul Rashid Tahir Momin
who took the oath in Marathi. When it was Azmi's turn, he started in Hindi. ``I
had told the speaker that I would take the oath in Hindi as I don't know
Marathi. I did not object to Tahir's taking the oath in Marathi,'' he said,
adding that the Constitution allowed a member to take the oath in any Indian
language. ``I have a high respect for Marathi and Marathi people. Marathi is
like my mother,'' he added for good measure. As soon as Azmi began speaking, the
unseemly scuffle began, with legislators looking on, shocked.
After MNS rap, Azmi now in Sena crosshairs
MUMBAI: Maharashtra Samajwadi Party
MLA Abu Asim Azmi found himself in yet another sticky situation on Tuesday, when
his off-the-cuff remark
wrath of Sena MLAs.
Azmi while referring to a 'Saamna' editorial had
told reporters, "Balasaheb is growing old and has been behaving like a child. He
says he doesn't want to die in Maharashtra as Marathis let him down in the
recent assembly elections."
On Tuesday, a couple of Sena MLAs
gheraoed him as he was leaving the assembly premise. Thane Sena MLA Eknath
Shinde led the party band to heckle Azmi who was seated in his car. "We were
told that Azmi made some derogatory references to Balasaheb. We confronted him
as he was about to leave the Vidhan Bhavan and sought an explanation from him.
We've warned Azmi not to make any statement on Balasaheb in future," Shinde told
reporters.
An allegedly chastened Azmi is believed to have assured
Shinde and other party MLAs that he didn't mean any insult to the Sena
chief.
Azmi said after Tuesday's fracas in the House, he has been
receiving threatening phone calls. "Unknown callers have been threatening me,
telling me not to speak against Raj Thackeray," said Azmi. "Now, with the attack
on the my showroom in Colaba, I demand that my security be upgraded. I will be
taking a delegation to Maharashtra home minister R R Patil in this connection,"
he said.

Raj Thackeray-led MNS, whose
members assaulted SP legislator Abu Asim Azmi in the Maharashtra Assmebly, on
Wednesday said they would
MLA.
"We will apologise in the assembly as it was not our intention
to malign the image of the House. However, there is no question of apologising
to Azmi," MNS leader Atul Sarpotdar said.
"The whole controversy
started because of one person - Abu Asim Azmi. It was not our intention to lower
the dignity of the House. What happened was a spontaneous reaction by our MLAs,"
Sarpotdar said.
Raj Thackeray had issued a statement asking all MLAs
in the Assmebly to take oath in Marathi but Azmi deliberately chose to take oath
in Hindi, Sarpotdar said.
"MNS group leader in Assembly, Bala
Nandgaonkar, will speak to Raj Thackeray today on the issue of tendering an
apology for Monday's incident and would, during the course of the day, apologise
to the House," Sarpotdar said.

The staggering figure, revealed in a reply to an
RTI query by activist Subhash Chandra Agarwal, indicates the extent of spending
by public representatives even as the country was sliding into an economic
slowdown.
According to the cabinet secretariat, cabinet ministers -
30 in all in the UPA's first term - spent Rs 137 crore on foreign travel between
fiscal 2006-07 and 2008-09 with highest in the year 2007-08 when more than Rs
115 crore was spent.
Incidentally, domestic travel too cost the
public exchequer a pretty penny with the amount spent totalling Rs 163 crore.
The expenditure incurred by them during 2008-09 was Rs 94.4 crore, which was 38%
more than the cumulative expenditure incurred on domestic travel in the previous
two years.
About Rs 127 crore was spent by central ministers in
2008-09, Rs 138.7 crore in 2007-08 and about Rs 82.3 crore during 2006-07 on
their visits abroad as well as within the country.
The reply from
cabinet secretariat did not give any further break-up of expenses in different
heads as they are held by the Drawing and Disbursing Officers (DDO) of different
ministries.
"This office does not have any record of any individual
minister as all the expenditure is booked under one respective head of account
of all the ministers. As per existing rules... the details of each and every
payment to the individual concerned by the DDO of that ministry," J L Khurana,
senior accounts officer at the ministry of personnel, public grievances and
pension said.
Tendulkar, who will be celebrating his 20 years in international cricket Sunday, clearly indicated that every Indian has a right to make Mumbai his home.
'Mumbai belongs to all Indians. I am a Maharashtrian and am extremely proud of that. But I am an Indian first,' he said at a press conference here Friday.
Tendulkar said that the best moment of his life was when he got the India cap in 1989.
'The most important moment of my life was the day I got my India cap (Nov 15 in Karachi). I was on cloud nine. It was a moment I have dreamt for,' he said.
Hamid Raja Khan, a lawyer practicing with the district court
has filed the case under section 295A, 298, 153A and 121 of Indian Penal Code
(IPC) seeking legal action against the MNS leader for insulting Hindi language
on the floor of the House.
The complaint alleges that Raj Thackeray
asked his legislators not to take the oath of office in Hindi, which is an act
similar to treason.
The lawyer has urged the court to prosecute the
firebrand leader and his MNS functionaries for indulging in activities that
tantamount to treachery. The case will come up for hearing on November 16.
Demanding withdrawal of the political party status conferred to MNS
by the Election Commission of India, the lawyer also sought punishment for all
the members of MNS including four legislators facing four year suspension from
Maharashtra assembly for misconduct on the floor of the House.
The
conduct of the legislators on the directive of their leader Raj Thackeray was
not in consonance with the fundamentals of the Constitution of India and it
appears that they are running a well planned conspiracy to break the country on
the lines of regionalism and language, asserted the young lawyer.
Shiv Sena men would have made 'tandoori' of Azmi: Bal Thackeray
Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray has held Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi "responsible" for Monday's mayhem in the Maharashtra assembly or roast of somebody like Azmi for having hurt Marathi pride. In an editorial in the party mouthpiece Saamna, Thackeray said that though elected from Maharashtra, Azmi took the oath as legislator in Hindi and not Marathi, and therefore he was beaten by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) lawmakers. Stressing that the Sena was born on the issue of Marathi pride, Thackeray said in the past the Shiv Sena has carried out many such campaigns against the use of Hindi and English in the state legislature, especially by its senior member Diwakar Raote. "If somebody like Azmi had come in Raote's hands, he would have made a 'tandoori' out of him, and removed his skin," the editorial declared. "That (Marathi pride) has been the Shiv Sena's philosophy always and would also remain in the future," he noted. However, Thackeray lashed out at the MNS for the violent behaviour of its legislators inside the assembly. He said that nobody can support the violence and pandemonium created by the MNS members in the assembly Monday. "The proceedings of the assembly or parliament must be carried out as per rules and decorum, it cannot be reduced to an 'akhada' (wrestling pit) or a vegetable market." Azmi was slapped and pushed by MNS legislators inside the assembly Monday for flouting the party diktat of taking the oath as legislator only in Marathi. Reacting to Thackeray's views, Samajwadi Party state president Abu Asim Azmi said that Bal Thackeray was "approaching the last stages of his life and has lost his mental balance". "In fact, despite all his efforts the Shiv Sena could not come to power again and he is feeling very upset, so he talks anything," Azmi said here Tuesday. Meanwhile,Describing Sachin Tendulkar as the best role model for a sportsman, Indian pacer Irfan Pathan Friday said he wanted to see the master blaster as a member of the World Cup winning team in 2011.
'There cannot be a better role model than him. I am lucky to have shared the dressing room with somebody like Sachin,' Pathan told reporters at the Eden Gardens here.
Tendulkar is days away from completing 20 years of international cricket.
'Best wishes for him for reaching this great milestone...It's not easy to cope up with the huge pressure. It drains your body and mind. And it's also difficult to stay away from your family for a better part of every year,' Pathan said.
'I really wish to see him as a part of the World Cup winning Indian team,' he added.
'In 2011, we are hosting it (along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh). Hopefully, we will then win the World Cup with Sachin as a member of our side. The whole country wants him to win a World Cup,' said Pathan, who was here as member of the Baroda team for the Ranji Trophy Elite Group match against Bengal.

Karnataka spends Rs 1cr on one Cabinet meet
GULBARGA: Austerity wasn’t quitethe political rage a year ago, but even by easier standards this was rather
extravagant. On September 26 last
big show of its concern for north Karnataka and decided to hold a cabinet
meeting in this city. Guess what they ended up doing? Spend Rs 28 lakh on
decoration alone — most of it on flowers.
A glimpse of this
floral tribute to north Karnataka (rather, to the notables of Yeddyurappa
government notables) emerged from an RTI query put by TOI under the Right to
Information Act. The decoration expenditure included putting up many buntings
and welcome arches for 34 ministers, their secretaries and staff, who had taken
the trouble of travelling 623 km from Bangalore.
The total
expenditure for this one meeting was a shade lower than Rs 1 crore — Rs
92.39 lakh. The meeting was touted as a move to impart confidence to the people
of north Karnataka regions, who had felt neglected by previous governments, that
this government cared. So, no effort, human and financial, was spared to hold
it.
The meeting was for a couple of hours. The city was awash with
welcome arches, newly laid out roads and was teeming with people keen to catch a
glimpse of the ministers. Decisions taken included carving out Yadgir as a
separate district from Gulbarga, declaring November 15 — the jayanti of
Kanakadasa, noted 16th century poet, philosopher and musician — as a
government holiday, and sanctioning Rs 4 crore for the B R Ambedkar Chair in
Gulbarga University.
In 1997, at the cabinet meeting held in Hubli
during J H Patel’s tenure as CM, a committee was constituted to look into
the problems of regional imbalance in north Karnataka. But efforts of successive
governments have not yielded much result.
To placate the region, a
legislature session was held in Belgaum in 2006 followed by another early this
year. An assurance to make Belgaum as the second capital of Karnataka was
announced in the first session.
Now, the government plans to hold
the World Kannada conference in Belgaum in December. Incidentally, another
cabinet meeting was held this year in Gulbarga on August 27. Sources say, bills
of contractors are yet to be cleared. So getting a fix on the final expenditure
figure was not possible.
Mamata proposes to build rail coach factory in Singur
A day after state-run BharatHeavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) officials visited the abandoned Tata Motors land in
West Bengal's Singur,
Banerjee expressed her eagerness Friday to build a coach factory on the plot.
"I feel a national project should come up on that piece of land. If
necessary, we can go for joint venture with the state government also. We will
set up world's biggest coach factory over there," Banerjee told a private
television channel 'Star Ananda' from Delhi.
Singur, 40 km from
here, turned into a battleground since May 2006 after the state's Left Front
government announced global auto major Tata Motors would roll out Nano, the
world's least expensive car, priced at Rs.100,000 from there.
Opposition Trinamool-led protesters demanded return of 400 acres -
of the 997.11 acres acquired - to farmers. Finally, Tata Motors in October 2008
moved the small car plant to Sanand in Gujarat.
"If they (state
government) give us the land, we can proceed. We can build the ancilliary
industry in Dankuni and I can join the two places by a dedicated rail line," she
said.
Banerjee said she spoke to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee
three to four months back about the coach factory. "He told me to go ahead."
The Singur land in Hooghly district is still in possession of Tata
Motors. Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata had earlier said if the state government
pays compensation, the company is ready to return the land.
Talking
about the Singur farmers, Banerjee said: "The farmers are in a bad condition,
they don't get two square meals but they have not bent down before anyone. We
have to respect that."

Statues row: SC turns down Mayawati's fresh plea
The Supreme Court on Fridayrefused to grant the plea of Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh for carrying
out "maintenance work" at
site in Lucknow.
"The question of maintenance has been decided by
this court earlier. The bench has heard at length . Why should we modify our
order?" We will wait till November 30. There is no change of circumstances," an
apex court bench said while turning down the UP government's plea.
A
bench of Justices H S Bedi and J M Panchal, however tagged hearing of the plea
along with the main petition on the issue which would come up for hearing on
November 30.
Mayawati's aide and senior counsel S C Mishra and R S
Suri, who appeared on behalf of the state, made the plea on the basis of an
urgent application that it wanted to carry out the maintenance work in view of
the December 6 Ambedkar anniversary celebrations.
By three separate
directions, the apex court had earlier restrained all construction and
maintenance works at the memorials being constructed by the UP government for
several Dalit icons and leaders, including Mayawati.
An NGO
Gomtinagar Sanstha and Mithilesh Kumar, an advocate, challenged the construction
on the ground that several heritage structures were being demolished for the
purpose.
The apex court broadened the scope of the PIL to examine
the constitutional validity of the state spending huge public money for
memorials of political leaders.
Koda pressed for contracts to Sinha's firm: ex-mines secretary
A former Jharkhand bureaucrathas claimed that in 2007 then chief minister Madhu Koda had pressurized him to
push files recommending iron
company.
"When you work in a system, instructions are passed to
officers. Even I was instructed by Madhu Koda on several occasions to push mine
related files," Jay Shankar Tewary, then mines and geology secretary, said over
phone from Patna.
Tewary held the post from January 2007 to July
2008, when he retired. He now lives in Patna. "I know Vinod Sinha. He used to
put pressure through Koda," Tewary said.
The Income Tax (IT)
department has issued arrest warrants against Sinha and Sanjay Chaudhary - both
close associates of Koda - and all three are accused of the Rs 2,500 crore money
laundering scam in Jharkhand.
Tewary said in late 2007, "Koda had
cleared a file recommending iron ore mine contracts to Core Steel company",
which it turned out was floated by Sinha. The file, however, never went through.
"We held up the file after we came to know that it was Vinod Sinha's
company," claimed Tewary. Sources in the mines department, however, say Core
Steel finally withdrew its file.
The IT department, however, is not
too happy with Tewary speaking to the media. Ujjwal Chaudhary, director, IT,
Investigations, said. "Tewary should have approached the IT department and
recorded his statement instead of going to the media."
The IT
department says it will interrogate bureaucrats regarding mine deals. "We will
certainly interrogate and record the statements of bureaucrats in mine deals,"
he said. Tewary, it appears, has a lot to say.
"During my tenure as
mines and geology secretary, we recommended mine allocation to national and
international steel players. The small steel players tried to influence us by
putting pressure through Koda," said Tewary.
"To cope with the small
players, I recommended to the state government that iron ore mines should be
allocated to small players through the Jharkhand State Mineral Development
Corporation (JSMDC) and National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC)," Tewary
recalled.
"My recommendations were turned down by the state
government," he added. Tewary even spoke of Koda wanting contracts for Chiriya
Mines, which have the world's best quality iron ore deposits, to go to private
players.
"The state government had stated that SAIL should keep
one-third for its requirement and the rest should be awarded to the state
government for private players' use," said Tewary. It was also reported that 40
mine-related files were disposed of in one hour during Koda's tenure.
"It was not an hour, rather a day during which the applications of
interested parties were disposed of. Around 40 parties had appeared and their
applications were disposed of," said Tewary.
He said this was done
on the day he joined as mines and geology secretary - the very day when he left
for the 2007 Punjab assembly elections as an observer.
"The Election
Commission takes your services for a fixed tenure and I was coming and going
back to Punjab in February 2007."
According to Tewary, during his
predecessor S.K. Sathapathy's tenure as mines and geology secretary,
applications were invited for a mine from interested parties. Around 60 parties
applied for iron ore mines and Sathapathy called them for a presentation.
Then Sathapathy, who had the image of an honest officer, was
transferred and B.K. Tripathy, another senior IAS officer, was named for the
post. But Tripathy refused to join and it was then that Tewary joined as
secretary in the department.
Koda was mines and geology minister
between March 2005 and September 2006 when Arjun Munda was the chief minister.
Even when he was chief minister between September 2006 and August 2008, Koda
kept the portfolio with himself.
IT commissioner Ajay Kumar has been
camping in Ranch since Nov 7 to scrutinize mine deals during Koda's rule.

They are prominent among the
40 party leaders, whose names have been finalized for campaigning for the
five-phase polls in the tribal state beginning November 25, Congress sources
said. However, details of the constituencies where the star campaigners would go
are yet to be worked out.
Besides the top three leaders, union
ministers Pranab Mukherjee, Mukul Wasnik, Ambika Soni, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Subodh
Kant Sahay and Vilas Rao Deshmukh will also be visiting the state.
Delhi chief minister Shiela Dixit and Rajasthan chief minister Ashok
Gehlot will also address a few election meetings in the state.
The
party has also decided to involve cricketer-turned politician Md Azharuddin in
the election campaigning there, the sources said.
Congress,
following protracted negotiations, finalized an alliance with Babulal
Marandi-led Jharkhand Vikas Morcha last week under which the latter would be
contesting 19 seats, Congress 55 and friendly fights at remaining seven
constituencies.
Congress sources said the party is making a serious
bid to come to power in the state, where it has not been able to form a
government since its inception in 2000.
Is Headley the missing link in 26/11 conspiracy?
With David ColemanHeadley's travel itinerary and the persons he met up with during his nine visits
to India becoming
Pakistan-born American, now in US custody, could have played a role in planning
the Mumbai terror attacks.
Top intelligence officials said Headley,
a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) suspect, is now turning out to be one of the prime
suspects in the probe into 26/11 - India's biggest terror attack whose first
anniversary will be observed in a fortnight - and was also looking at other
potential targets in the country.
"Look at the reconnaisance
missions he carried out. Why do you think he was travelling to Kochi, Ahmedabad,
Pune, Mumbai and Delhi? Clearly it was not for sightseeing," a senior
intelligence official said on condition of anonymity.
Investigators
say that Headley could well be the missing link in the 26/11 conspiracy.
Headley, say intelligence agencies, had visited India nine times on his US
passport (No. 097536400), issued March 10, 2006 that was valid for 10 years.
According to officials probing Headley's connections, he had an eye
for detail and was capable of meticulous planning.
Headley, who
changed his name from Daood Gilani in 2006, and his alleged accomplice Tahawwur
Hussain Rana, a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin, were arrested in the US
last month by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The FBI
later informed the Indian intelligence agencies that the two were plotting
terror attacks on behalf of the LeT against India and the National Defence
College in New Delhi and two premier educational institutions were on their hit
list.
An FBI team is expected in India next week to probe the Indian
links of Headley and will be joined by security agencies in Mumbai.
"The FBI investigation shared with Indian investigators reveals that
Headley has played an important role in conspiring the Mumbai attack. We are
probing this link," the officer said, pleading anonymity.
"The
criminal complaints the FBI has so far shared expose a serious plot against
overseas targets by the two working for the LeT," the official said.
Intelligence agencies were also investigating Headley's suspected
links to terror outfit Indian Mujahideen, which had carried out a series of bomb
attacks across the country, including in Jaipur, Delhi and Bangalore last year.
Headley and Rana have been charged by the FBI of plotting to attack
a Danish newspaper whose cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed that led to violent
protests by Muslims.
Headley, according to investigators, also
travelled to Pakistan where he met with a militant having ties with Al Qaeda,
Harakat-ul Jihadi Islami, and communicated with members of the Lashkar-e-Taiba
about their plans to conduct fresh attacks in India.
Home Minister
P. Chidambaram Thursday said Headley was in India before and the after the 26/11
terror carnage that left over 170 people dead in India's financial capital.
India's National Investigating Agency has already registered cases
against Headley and Rana and has sought their deportation.
Headley's
passport details, a xerox copy of which police got from a Delhi hotel, revealed
he had come to the capital from Abu Dhabi March 6 this year - the ninth and his
last visit to India. He is also suspected of having a Pakistani passport, the
officials say.
According to Delhi Police, during his recent visits
to the capital he stayed in two hotels of Delhi in crowded Paharganj, a popular
destination for foreign backpackers.
On March 6, he stayed at Hotel
Holiday International and then for the next two days at Hotel Anand, from where
he checked out saying he was leaving for Rajasthan, according to hotel records.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Police have also questioned Bollywood filmmaker
Mahesh Bhatt's son Rahul for his alleged friendship with Headley. Rahul, a
fitness instructor, was let off after questioning as he was unaware of Headley's
terror links, said sources in the Mumbai Police.
"How would you
think that a white American had anything to do with terror," Mahesh Bhatt told
reporters when asked about his son was questioned.
In Mumbai,
Headley also met realty broker Sunny Singh to rent a flat through a former
French client. However, since he could not provide proper documents, he did not
help him get a flat, the property dealer said.
"I asked him for
copies of his visa, passport and other identity papers, which he was not ready
to provide," he said.
6-man Puducherry cabinet spends Rs 36L on snacks
PUDUCHERRY:
It's a small cabinet but with a healthy appetite and a penchant for entertaining
guests quite liberally. A query under RTI has
minister V Vaithilingam and his five colleagues in the cabinet have spent more
than Rs 36 lakh on tea, snacks and beverages while hosting visitors in their
respective offices in the assembly in the eight months between September 2008
and April 2009. (

Welfare minister M Kandasamy topped the list among the
spenders by ordering tea, snacks, beverages and other food items for Rs 10.48
lakh between September 2008 and March 2009 for visitors, officials and elected
members. Kandasamy was closely followed by the chief minister, whose office
spent Rs 9.86 lakh from September 25, 2008 to April 30, 2009.
Some
days the reception seemed to have been on a mass scale: Vaithilingam's office
ordered food items for Rs 1.06 lakh from a local hotel on a single day in
September 2008; similarly, home minister E Valsaraj's office bought sweets worth
Rs 60,000 on December 5, 2008. Public health minister A Namassivayam's office
spaced out the expenses over three months, but ended up with a bill of Rs 2.4
lakh on purchase of sweets from the same retailer. All of them show a marked
preference for certain hotels and restaurants. Kandasamy's office, for instance,
divided orders worth Rs 5 lakh between two establishments. The total expenses
incurred by the cabinet added up to Rs 36.84 lakh.
The RTI query was
filed by NGO Rajiv Gandhi Human Rights Awareness Organization's secretary P
Ragupathy and the findings have shocked local
activists.
Vaithilingam, however, insisted that far from being a big
spender, his regime had drastically reduced unnecessary expenditure by 50% in
the past year. "The expenses incurred by the previous council of ministers stood
at Rs 1.1 crore for a year. The new cabinet after assuming charge made it a
point to reduce unnecessary expenses. We drastically reduced the expenses from
Rs 1.1 crore to Rs 50 lakh or Rs 55 lakh per year,'' he told
TOI.
Vaithilingam said he had not appointed an officer on special
duty and a secretary to avoid additional expenses. "The chief minister can
appoint an officer on special duty and a secretary. But I preferred not to
appoint them in an effort to reduce expenses. The OSD accompanies the chief
minister wherever he travels either by air or road. But I travel alone during
official trips and carry my suitcase and luggage myself,'' he
said.
Puducherry AIADMK secretary and MLA A Anbalagan wondered how
the ministers could have spent lavishly while the territory was witnessing a
severe financial crunch. "It was the ministers who complained of severe
financial constraints in executing several projects including government medical
college project. But they recklessly spent lakhs and lakhs of rupees on tea and
beverages,'' he said.
UPA netas board economy, fly luxury
NEW DELHI: Pilots of the erstwhileIndian Airlines have blown the lid off the UPA's ongoing austerity drive which
has seen ministers and MPs
the airline management, they alleged that ``some'' ministers and MPs insisted on
an upgrade — that is seats in business class — after boarding the
aircraft on economy tickets.
Some VVIPs, the Indian Commercial
Pilots Association (ICPA) complained, even ``forcibly occupy seats in J
(business) class''.
The airline, on its part, maintained that it had
not come across any such case. ``The ICPA has not cited any specific example. So
the question of taking action for something that has not happened so far does
not arise,'' said an airline spokesperson. Officials of several airlines,
however, agreed that despite the austerity drive, not many VVIPs were
comfortable flying economy class.
Steering clear of the austerity
issue, the ICPA only requested airline CMD Arvind Jadhav not to take
disciplinary action against pilots by holding them responsible for the upgrade
``if some person in power upgraded him/herself on their own''.
After
taking over, Jadhav has come down heavily on the earlier common practice of
upgrades in the Air India-Indian Airlines combine. Only very senior level
employees can travel business class and even for other well-connected people,
the economy ticket has to be of a certain minimum fare level to be considered
for upgrade.
``Many private airlines have instructions fed into their
systems to give upgrades automatically, subject to availability, to certain
powerful names from the political and bureaucratic spectrum. The austerity drive
has mainly meant loss of revenue for us as when certain VVIPs are checked-in, we
do insist on upgrading them. Sometimes they don't accept the offer and sometimes
they do. But they all want to know if some senior party leader or UPA
functionary is on that flight before accepting the upgrade,'' said an airport
official of a private airline.
Being a government airline, IA airport
staff may not be under the same stress as their private counterparts to
automatically upgrade the big names holding economy tickets — possibly,
leaving VVIPs to use their clout on board the aircraft to seek
upgrades.
``Since they are in positions of power, our commercial staff and
cabin crew are helpless as any resistance (to forcible upgrades) will lead to an
awkward situation... So, at times, keeping in mind on-time performance and to
avoid agitation of mind, we have to turn a blind eye to (this) problem,'' said
the letter written by ICPA general secretary R S Otaal on
Wednesday.
Worldwide, it is customary for airlines to upgrade
commercially important persons (CIPs) or even common fliers inconvenienced by
the airline in any way. However, the desi VIP culture has meant that airlines
have made a habit of upgrading netas and
babus.

Law ministry has no details of Moily's travel expenses
NEW DELHI: The law ministry hasclaimed it has no information about Union law minister Veerappa Moily's travel
outside Delhi and the expenses
"No information is
available with this branch secretariat on the travel of the law minister and the
purpose of the travel and the total cost incurred during the travel and stay,"
the ministry said in its reply to a RTI application.
"No information
is available with this branch secretariat about the list of assets and the bank
balances of Moily," it said.
According to the ministry's Chief Public
Information Officer B K Bhargava, the country's top law officers -- Attorney
General of India (AG), Solicitor General (SG) and other government law officers
-- are entitled to only actual expenses incurred on travelling, boarding and
lodging during their official visits.
He said there was no provision
for travel by the executive class or stay in the five-star accommodation of the
AG, SG and Additional Solicitor Generals (ASGs).
"As per Ministry of
Law and Justice...Gazettee Notification of July 18, 2008,...where a law officer
is required to perform journeys outside the headquarters in the course of his
duties, he shall be paid or reimbursed the actual expenses incurred on
travelling and on boarding and lodging," the ministry said. .
The
ministry further said there was no special criterion for selection to the post
of top law officers but a bachelors degree in law was a must and only advocates
of eminence are being appointed.
Delhi-based Rajeev Agarwal, who
filed the application, had also sought information from the government on
details of the functioning of AG, SG, ASG and other standing counsel and their
perks and entitlements.
Noting that the fee payable to AG, SG and
ASGs was governed by terms and conditions issued by the ministry, Bhargava said
it had no information on payments made to AG, SG or other ASG by the ministries
or any public undertakings with respect to opinions, appearances and settling of
affidavits and conferences between June and September 15.
"The office
has no information on payments to AG and SG. However, payments to ASG are
payable by the litigant department," Bhargava said, adding information about
this had been notified on January 1, 1987, and July 18, 2008, in the official
gazette.
India, Iran to discuss Pak-based terror, gas pipeline
India and Iran are expectedto discuss the common threat of terrorism emanating from Pakistan and the
proposed trilateral gas pipeline
Mottaki undertakes a two-day visit here from Monday.
Marking the
first high-level contact since re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad in
July, Mottaki's visit will also provide an opportunity for the two countries to
discuss various other collaborative projects like development of an integrated
port-road-rail infrastructure to provide transit access to India from Chabahar
to central Asia.
During the talks between external affairs minister
S M Krishna and Mottaki, the Indian side is expected to get an update on Iran's
talks on its controversial nuclear programme with European interlocutors.
Mottaki, who is undertaking his second visit here since 2006, will
also call on Vice President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Terrorism from Pakistan is expected to be discussed when the two
sides review the situation in the region.
Both India and Iran are
victims of terrorism emanating from Pakistan which was highlighted by the bomb
attack in Sistan province last month, official sources pointed out today while
explaining the need to discuss the common concern.
India favours
coordination of efforts with Iran against terrorism and will discuss what can be
done in this regard, they said.
Headley stayed at Taj, associate Rana in Mumbai days before 26/11
American terror suspect DavidHeadley had stayed at the Taj hotel here twice before the Mumbai carnage while
his associate and Canadian
five days before the attack fuelling suspicion of their link to the strike. (

Official sources in Mumbai said investigations have
revealed that Headley, arrested by US investigating agency FBI for planning
terror attacks in India, stayed at Taj between March 28 and March 30, 2007.
During this period, he stayed in Room No 1809, they said.
Headley
came back to the hotel on May 2, 2007 and stayed in Room No 314 till May 7, the
sources said. The Taj had bore the brunt of the three-day carnage after
Lashkar-e-Taiba(LeT) terrorists struck Mumbai on November 26 last.
Rana, who is also under FBI custody, had stayed in a guest house in
south Mumbai till November 21, 2008, before he flew to an European destination
on way back to Canada.
The sources said this has raised suspicion
that he may have given final touches to the audacious terror strikes five days
later that left 183 people dead including some American, British and Israeli
nationals.
Investigators also found that Headley stayed in two
hotels in April last year in Delhi's Paharganj, a favourite of budget travellers
from abroad and recovered his passport details.
National
Investigating Agency and Central security agencies are now probing into the
travel details of both the suspects to check if they had any hand in the 26/11
attack or the serial bomb blasts in the country between 2006 and 2008.
As Indian investigators continue to trace the movements of the two
men, the Headley trail also took a new turn with reports of contacts between
Headley and Mahesh Bhatt's son Rahul but the noted film maker dismissed the
possibility of his son's involvement in any terror activities.
Cong harps on Marandi's clean image: Survey
RANCHI: Just days before the formal
announcement of assembly elections in Jharkhand on October 23, the Congress did
a sample survey to assess the
suitable leader for the post of chief minister.
According to the
survey report, the party is harping on an outsider coming from saffron brigade
and president of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM) Babulal Marandi, who was also the
first chief minister.
Congress has even entered into an alliance
with JVM as Marandi had comparatively a clean image among other leaders
including top brass of the party. Congress got 62 seats while the JVM has 19.
As the campaign is picking up, the Congress realized the plan to
ride piggy back on the clean image of Marandi is not feasible as its own party
organization is weak.
"Party's intention to ride piggy back on JVM
and clean image of Marandi is not likely to work as Congress itself is very weak
at grassroots level," said a senior Congress leader supervising election.
The survey report based on reply of one among 10,000 respondents
shows that around 40% people voted for Marandi, followed by former CM and BJP MP
Arjun Munda. Not a single Congress leader in the state got more than 10% vote
for the post of chief minister.
Weak presence of party leaders
including candidates has send shock waves in the rank and file. Some candidates
including some sitting MLAs have never tried to reach the people living in their
respective constituencies. They are not even aware of the ground realities,
caste equation and development issues which they can use as a tool to woo the
electorate in their favour, said a source.
In most of the places,
the party is also facing resentment among the young brigade which feels cheated
as youths have not been given tickets. Out of the 62 candidates only five are
youths, remaining seats have been given to oldies including those who lost their
seats in Lok Sabha election, said a young leader, "Under these circumstances we
are not going to put in the required effort to ensure victory of the
candidates."
Spokesperson of Congress Radha Krishna Kishore,
however, had a different opinion. There is resentment among some young leaders.
"We are confident that clean image of Marandi and good governance during
President's rule will ensure very good result for the party," said Kishore.

BJP bid to play down infighting in party
RANCHI: As infighting in BJP came to
fore with two prominent contenders former chief minister Arjun Munda and state
president Raghuvar Das
patch up the differences, brought both the stalwarts on the same platform to
address the media here on Thursday.
Though uneasiness was apparent
on their faces, Munda and Das tried their level best to demonstrate solidarity.
Das even came to Munda's rescue when questions were hurled on him seeking an
explanation for his accountability in the alleged multi-crore money laundering
and hawala transactions of his cabinet colleague Madhu Koda.
Munda
tried to evade the questions saying investigations will reveal everything. But
Das chipped in to say that Munda in the capacity of leader of opposition had
raised questions over Koda's conduct and levelled serious charges of corruption
against him in the House several times.
He also asserted that
instead of state government, Congress-led Union government should be held
responsible for the corrupt practices of former chief minister Koda, who
remained in power due to support of the party.
Accusing the Congress-led
UPA government at the Centre of staging drama in the name of checking corruption
through I-T raids, Das said the government should give an explanation for the
delay in issuance of arrest warrant against Koda aides Sanjay Choudhary and
Vinod Sinha.
"It seems the government was giving them enough time to
either flee or to avoid interrogation or give them a chance to tamper with the
evidences," he added. Das also raised questions over the recent alliance of the
party with Babulal Marandi-led Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (P).
Munda
narrated the details of the election programme of BJP leaders. He said LK Advani
is visiting the state on November 21, whereas party president Rajnath Singh
would come on a four-day visit on November 20 and again on three-day visit on
November 27.
"During his stay, Singh will address te election
rallies in different parts of the state," he said. On two occasions, JD (U)
president Sharad Yadav and Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar will address the
public with BJP leader LK Advani and BJP president Rajnath Singh jointly.
Mind his language
Raj Thackeray was in search of issues in 2007 to further his Marathi
agenda when he thought he had hit upon an ideal one. He decreed that
registration numbers on all vehicles in Maharashtra henceforward be
written in Marathi.
The Road Transport Authority (RTA) byelaws clearly state that
licence plates be written in English alphabets with Arabic numerals.
“If they can make this concession for Muslims and allow them to write
in Urdu, then why this step-motherly treatment to Marathi?” Raj asked
as posters supporting his demand went up across Mumbai.
They had to be brought down hastily a day or two later following
media ridicule and an explanation from the authorities: Arabic numerals
simply meant that the numbers were written as 1, 2, 3 etc; not as I,
II, III et al, which were Roman numerals. “This has been done to
facilitate vehicles to travel all across India because authorities in
one state cannot be expected to read alien scripts. It is a central law
in the interest of uniformity. No one in any state can overturn it,”
the RTA said
That level of ignorance was brought back this week to his Marathi
manoos campaign, when his spokesperson Shirish Parkar denied — on
national television — that Hindi was more than just the language of
Biharis and Uttar Pradeshis. “It is not the national language,” he
stated unambiguously.
I was appalled but not really surprised. Because even Bal Thackeray
has never in his life been conversant either with the Constitution of
India or any of our laws. “North Indians migrating to Mumbai will not
be
given ration cards,” he had announced as his first policy soon after
the Sena-BJP government came to power in Maharashtra in 1995, knowing
little that the rationing authorities were not at the beck and call of
the state government.
Pramod Mahajan of the BJP had to stretch himself to the extreme to
persuade Thackeray to withdraw the remark and convince him that it was
not constitutionally possible to disallow anyone to come to Mumbai and
apply for a ration card. Then, again, at the ripe old age of 73,
Thackeray Sr did not know the difference between a Commission of
Inquiry and a simple Enquiry Committee. “They are different?” he had
asked. And he was not dissembling.
Raj, then, is just a chip off the old block. But this time, perhaps
in ignorance again, he has breached all constitutional propriety,
setting himself up as an extra-constitutional authority by writing to
all Maharashtra MLAs to eschew Hindi — or else.
Who will tell him that even the President of India cannot overturn Hindi as India’s national language?
Poisoning minds

As if unhealthy competitive politics of the Thackeray cousins was
not enough, the state of Maharashtra has plunged into noxious
provocative politics. This week's disruptive raucous in the state
assembly virtually muted leaders of all the four major parties,
Congress, NCP, BJP and Shiv Sena.
Abu Azmi, the lone Samajwadi Party representative, was the target of
attack by MNS MLAs for flouting their boss's diktat of taking oath of
membership of the assembly only in Marathi. Azmi was obstructed,
abused, even slapped.
The podium was removed and slogans were
shouted. Azmi, who is no saint either, on his part, was seen taking his
footwear in hand in retaliation to his detractors. He has ever been
ready to play political mischief.
If in two and half decades of
his residence in Mumbai Azmi has not picked up even rudimentary
knowledge of Marathi and cannot read a few lines of the oath in the
official language of the State, can he claim to be an MLA from
Maharashtra? Therefore who provoked whom, could be a moot point and a
matter of investigation. But that such an incident took place in a
temple of democracy is a disgrace to all.
This single incident
has disrespected all those guardians of democratic norms who strived to
lay down sound and healthy traditions of party politics in Maharashtra.
This week's incident does not appear to be an impulsive misadventure as
both sides seemed to have planned their strategies. The signs of the
times are that this is not going to end here. Azmi is a compulsive
instigator and Raj, like his uncle, a compulsive reactor.
Raj
will not relent in his campaign because brothers and sisters of the
Marathi people from Maharashta have been residing in Madhya Pradesh,
Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi and Haryana. The Marathas went to North
India on war campaigns in the 17th and the 18th centuries and many
continued to stay there. These families are trying to retain and foster
their Marathi culture in whatever way they can. Even in Karnataka
Assembly the Marathi MLAs from Belgaum insist on taking oath in Marathi
and not in Kannada.
What will happen to all of them if they are
forced to eschew their Marathi pride? What if every Indian state starts
insisting on observance of local traditions and customs and speaking
only the local language? Will the trend ultimately lead to linguistic
balkanisation of the country? Parochialism in a limited quantity does
help development of the region, but when let loose it can kill the
unity of a diverse nation.Mumbai being miniature India can ill-afford
to lose its cosmopolitan character.
A small measure of initial
political success seems to have given Raj Thackeray unlimited
confidence. He has started issuing fatwas like his uncle Bal Thackeray.
But the senior Thackeray operated in a different social milieu. The new
saviour of the Marathi language had proclaimed that every member of the
newly formed assembly must take oath in Marathi, the official language
of Maharashtra.
Even Hindi won't do as the Constitution does not
recognise Hindi as the "national" language, contrary to the common
belief. Raj did not seem to have read that the same Constitution has
termed Hindi as the "official" language of the new nation.
The
followers of Raj ever willing carry out with great enthusiasm the
"virile" diktat of their party boss particularly when Marathi honour is
challenged. Convinced that the Marathi manoos is getting a raw deal in
his own territory, they dutifully translate into 'action' his
instructions and go on rampaging, ransacking, intimidating and even
manhandling to "save the honour of Marathi manoos".
Has the
Marathi manoos become so vulnerable that he is ready to indulge in
violent acts at the slightest provocation? Is his mind so much infected
with ill-conceived and unwise answers to complex issues? Shiv Sena
leaders have been doing it for years.
Now Raj hopes to beat the
party his uncle founded for similar causes on their own ground with his
MNS. Marathi men and women ever in search of magical solutions appear
to be convinced that Raj is on the way to righting the wrong done to
them. On the other hand the migrants from UP and Bihar look to Abu Azmi
as their saviour.
Faced with a similar situation, Cicero, the
Roman statesman, is reported to have publicly stated, "How can people
be called back when the crowd is urging them on?" Years of poisoning
the minds of lower orders of society appear to result in the naive,
emotional crowd urging both Abu Azmi and Raj Thackeray on.
The
joy of being able to keep the Shiv Sena dream and shatter the dreams of
Uddhav seems to have made him supercilious. Aren't there more important
issues of the state that are waiting for Raj's attention? How to
restrain both Raj and Azmi will be a priority issue for both chief
minister Ashok Chavan and home minister RR Patil.

Investigators zero in on US-based LeT man's mysterious 'Rahul'

mentioned extensively in LeT operative David Coleman Headley’s e-mails to
handlers in Pakistan, has finally

He is a friend of Headley. The latter was arrested by the FBI in Chicago last
month for plotting major terror attacks in India and Denmark. (

Investigating agencies, who have already questioned Rahul,
have almost given him a clean chit, saying he appears to be innocent.
An officer privy to the investigations said, “He has admitted
to being friends with Headley. But, in all probability, he didn’t know
Headley’s actual background and took him to be a foreign national in India
on a job. That was exactly the guise Headley had been living under in India
between 2006 and 2009.”
It has also come to light that it was
Rahul who helped Headley rent a flat near Breach Candy hospital. The two met at
a gym which Rahul frequented.
Rahul, at that time, was supposed to
be launched in a film, Suicide Bomber, under his family banner Vishesh Films,
based on the London bombings. The project was eventually scrapped.
Headley, a US citizen of Pakistani origin who had been arrested by
US’s Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) on October 18 with a Canadian
citizen of Pakistani origin Tahawwur Rana, at Chicago’s O’Hare
International Airport, had told FBI interrogators that Rahul was a prominent
Indian actor. Headley had been arrested on the information that he was planning
terror attacks in Denmark and India.
The two men became friends and
when Headley said he was looking to rent a flat, Rahul even helped him get one
near Breach Candy through a property broker. All this while, say investigators,
Rahul was not aware that Headley had LeT links.
During his stay in
Mumbai, Headley was ostensibly functioning as a consultant for an immigration
firm in Tardeo. That was, possibly, the only identity that Rahul knew of
Headley. Earlier, there were theories among intelligence agencies that Rahul
could be a code word either for Shah Rukh Khan, who has played several character
by that name, or even a place that could have been a terror target.
When contacted, Rahul’s father Mahesh Bhatt neither confirmed
nor denied that his son had been questioned by the police in connection with the
Headley case. He simply said, “This is an issue of national security and
not something trivial related to Bollywood. Ask agencies that deal with national
security. I will not say anything more.”
All efforts to reach
Rahul failed as his phone was switched off. Text messages sent to him did not
elicit any reply till the time of going to press.
Investigators also
suspect that Headley may be holding dual passports of US and Pakistan (as
Pakistan allows it) and thus escaped the scrutiny of immigration officials as he
may have travelled to Pakistan using his Pak passport while to India using his
US passport.
In a few e-mail conversations with an LeT operative,
Headley has mentioned Rahul several times. The FBI affidavit notes: In an e-mail
on July 2009, Headley told Lashkar-e-Taiba Member A that “I think when we
get a chance we should revisit our last location again and say hi to
Rahul.”
A reply from LeT Member A on the same day read:
“To see Rahul is a good idea coz have some work for you over there too.
Matters are good enough to move forward...”
On July 9, Headley
writes again: “When you say ‘move forward’, do you mean in the
north direction or towards Rahul...” To this Member A replies:
“Towards Rahul.”
On July 10, Headley writes another mail
to Member A: “The visit to Rahul’s place, is it for checking real
estate property like before, or something different and if so please tell what
you can please. Also is it in Rahul’s city or different one?” To
this Member A replied: “There are some investment plans with me, not
exactly at Rahul’s city but near that. Rest we can decide when meet
according to your ease.”

Indian-origin people facing caste discrimination in UK: study

Thousands
of people of Indian origin, 71 per cent of whom were Dalits, face caste
discrimination in Britain, says a new report, leading to demands in the
country for making it illegal.
The
report, titled "Voice of the Community -- A Study into Caste and Caste
Discrimination in the UK", says that the caste system is widespread and
that it affects thousands of people in the workplace, the classroom and
even the doctor's surgery.
British law currently does not protect people who suffer caste-based discrimination.
The
issue was also discussed at the committee stage of the Equality Bill
2009 in the House of Commons in June this year, but the government said
evidence of this was lacking.
The
new study, whose main conclusion was that there is "considerable
evidence of caste-based discrimination among the Asians in Britain,"
was coordinated by the Anti-Caste Discrimination Alliance (ACDA), and
included academics from three British universities. ACDA hoped that the
study will provide evidence to the government to make caste
discrimination illegal.
The
study suggests that 58 per cent of the 300 people surveyed said they
had been discriminated against because of their caste, while in another
query 79 per cent said they did not think the police would understand
if they tried to report a caste-related "hate crime".
Almost
half of the respondents (45 per cent) said they had either been treated
negatively by co-workers or had comments made about their caste.While,
nine per cent felt they had been passed over for promotion, 10 per cent
said they had been paid less because of their caste. Another 5 per cent
said they had experienced threatening behaviour because of their caste.
The
study was conducted by academics from the universities of Manchester,
Hertfordshire and Manchester Metropolitan University.The report said
that doctors from the Indian subcontinent now indicated "a potential
for caste discrimination occurring in the healthcare sector".
"There
is clear evidence from the survey and the focus groups that the caste
system has been imported into the UK with the Asian diaspora and that
the associated caste discrimination affects citizens in ways beyond
personal choices and social interaction.
There is a danger that if the UK government does not effectively accept
and deal with the issue of caste discrimination the problem will grow
unchecked," it said.
Meanwhile,
Lynne Featherstone, Liberal Democrat MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, was
quoted by The Guardian as saying that "Caste discrimination, like other
forms of discrimination, needs to be outlawed. This is the evidence
that will prove the case for its inclusion in the equality bill".

Chandigarh:
A Dalit woman on Wednesday sought the intervention of the Punjab
government in the suspected killing of her son by some influential
people in their village last week and urged police be directed to
arrest the main accused.
Jeevan
Kumar, a resident of Chukar Chak village in the state's Moga district,
210 km from here, was shot dead following an altercation with a man who
used to play music at a high volume.
"Gopi,
who belongs to a very rich family of our village, used to play vulgar
songs at very high volume in his tractor when he crossed our street
every evening. My son objected to it and he paid with his life,"
Kuldeep Kaur, mother of Jeevan, told reporters here Wednesday.
"Gopi
called his cousin Dhanna Singh, who is a dreaded man in our village,
and they came to our house in search of Jeevan, who was not at home at
that time. Then they again came in the evening and started firing at
Jeevan who was in the market."
Jeevan died on the spot whereas three onlookers sustained injuries.
Police arrested three people, but key accused Dhanna Singh is still at large.
Kaur
said, "Police are afraid of Dhanna Singh and are pressurising us to
close the case. There is nobody to help the Dalit families of Punjab.
Other Dalit families are also living under the terror of these rich
boys. This is our desperate appeal to Punjab government to come forward
for our rescue."
The
family of the deceased, who was in his early twenties, also demanded a
compensation of Rs.1 million from the government and appealed to it to
direct the police to arrest the main accused Dhanna Singh.
They have also demanded Rs.100,000 aid for the families of the injured.

Election
results from Uttar Pradesh, often considered the true mirror of Indian
politics, show that the Samajwadi Party is on borrowed time. It failed
to secure a single seat in the by-elections that were held in the
state. The principal gainer was the Bahujan Samaj Party led by
Mayavati, which increased its tally. What seems apparent from the
voting figures is that Ms Mayavati not only held on to her own support
base among the Dalits, she also made significant inroads into the vote
bank of the other backward classes, the mainstay of the SP and its
leader Mulayam Singh Yadav. There are enough grounds to believe that Mr
Yadav may have lost the support of even his own caste. There is an
obvious shift from the caste-based politics that has prevailed in UP
for some time: the Dalit and the OBC votes seem to be clustering around
the BSP. If this trend holds it would be safe to conclude that the
entire backward caste vote — irrespective of the divisions between the
OBCs and the Dalits — has recognized the BSP as the best vehicle for
furthering their collective interests.
The
rout of the SP has other, perhaps more significant, ramifications. The
Congress has also gained in comparison to the SP, and this would
indicate that the latter is also losing its support among the Muslims.
In Firozabad, the Congress candidate, Raj Babbar, a former Samajwadi
leader, defeated Mr Yadav’s daughter-in-law, Dimple Yadav by a decisive
margin. Mr Yadav thus lost even in his home turf. It might be too early
to speak of a full-fledged Congress recovery in UP but the signs that
such a process has already started is more than clear from the election
results. The credit for this remarkable turnaround must go to Rahul
Gandhi who refused to be lured by short term successes and is
concentrating on building up his party’s organization and bases in UP.
The dividends of this investment are manifest and will increase in the
future. The Congress needs to keep its head and not be swayed by offers
of alliance from SP to form an anti-BSP front. The BSP remains the main
rival of the Congress in UP if the latter is to stage a recovery. But
this goal will not be achieved by making short term compromises with
unprincipled political entities. With the defeat of SP and the virtual
disappearance of the Bharatiya Janata Party, UP is preparing for a
battle royal between the Congress and the BSP. This may well determine
the future face of the Indian polity and the nation.

Dialogue with Maoists

The
good news recently has been the opening for a possible dialogue with
the Maoists after several bloody encounters, some Naxal barbarities, a
determined security mobilisation and more recent kidnappings. The
trigger was provided by the hostage-taking of a West Bengal police
official, Atindranath Dutta, and his release following a deal with the
West Bengal administration which enabled 20 tribal women naxal
associates or sympathisers to walk free with their bail applications
unopposed by the government. Dutta was delivered to the media with a
cheeky ‘prisoner of war’ placard hung around his neck.
The
State is not at war with the Maoists (and the army is not involved) but
is certainly engaged in enhanced law and order operations against a
misguided, ultra- radical movement that has been penetrated by
adventurers and joined by assorted criminals and disgruntled elements
under the banner of fighting indignity, injustice, exploitation and
neglect. That tribals, Dalits and other marginalised people have
suffered feudal and bureaucratic oppression cannot be denied but none
of this can extenuate or be reason for violence and an ideology that
speaks of class annihilation, ‘liberation’ and fighting ‘imperialism’.
The
trade-off of a police officer for 20 naxal women has evoked much
criticism in many quarters as a demoralising official sell out, a panic
reaction likely to embolden the naxals countrywide. The state home
secretary’s recalling what followed the Kandahar hijacking and the
Rubaiya Saeed episode in Srinagar was not wholly inaccurate but inept.
The failure to consult the Centre was certainly an error of judgment,
which Delhi noted but sensibly passed over.
As
a general rule one may argue that the state should never give in to
terrorist blackmail even if it results in the killing of hostages. But
each event needs to be assessed sui generis. Dutta was taken hostage
after the Union home minister had announced the government’s
willingness to talk to the Maoists if they abjured violence and the
latter had made a conditional response calling for the withdrawal of
security forces. This latter demand was quite rightly rejected
summarily as the state has a duty to protect all its citizens. Yet, it
does not follow that the door to dialogue should be closed.
The
initiative for talks should be pressed either directly or, as
Chidambaram has stated, through ‘well meaning people’ who can act as
intermediaries. He has significantly stated that the government is not
insisting that the Maoists lay down arms but merely abjure violence and
halt the wanton destruction of railway tracks, roads, transmission
towers and other developmental and social infrastructure and planting
landmines.
The
Citizens Initiative for Peace and other civil society groups in good
standing with all sides should now take the field to promote dialogue
with concerned state governments, acting in concert with the Centre.
Schools, health centres and associated infrastructure could be declared
safe zones. Both the government and Maoists should declare a suspension
of operations in defined areas and jurisdictions. The Maoists should
not parade with weapons and the security forces in turn should halt
aggressive patrolling though duty bound to challenge any infringement
of the law.
Momentum
should not be lost, especially as the government has offered to
facilitate such contacts. Meanwhile the security forces should be
advised to tread cautiously and be reactive rather than pro-active for
a while in order to give the Maoist leadership sufficient time to
instruct its cadre and make known its intent.
Much
has been said about attending to the root cause of disaffection as a
result of socio-economic neglect even though this does not admit of
mindless violence and sabotage of infrastructure. However, there has to
be a sound delivery system to ensure that social and economic
development is possible and reaches the targeted population. This calls
for structural changes which need to be urgently addressed.
The
tribal areas are by and large constitutionally subject to the
provisions of the Fifth Schedule and the more recently enacted
Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act or PESA. These powerful
instruments have been rendered effete through years of neglect. The
governor who is the kingpin or guardian of tribal rights under the
aegis of the President of India has virtually not functioned in
consonance with that mandate. Governors assume office without any
Instrument of Instructions to operationalise their constitutional role
and no independent or effective instrumentality to execute this task.
The Tribes Advisory Councils have become more ornamental than
purposeful and the mandatory annual reports of the governor to the
president are virtually written by the state tribal affairs departments
and, if prepared in time or sent to the president at all, are seldom
presented to parliament and almost never debated. The default appears
to have become routine. The president (or government) is not known to
have sent back any specific or regular directives to the states on the
basis of these reports, or otherwise, to take ameliorative measures as
constitutionally stipulated. Neither parliament nor individual MPs,
tribal or otherwise, have shown much interest in any of this.
This
then has led to administrative decline in the Fifth Schedule areas
which are understaffed and treated as punishment postings. Governance
is left to petty forest officials and other low-level functionaries,
minor forest produce and liquor contractors who rule the roost.
Corruption and indignity are rife and there is little redress. It is in
these conditions that Maoists win sympathy as Robin Hood-type saviours
until they make known their real intent, by when they are entrenched.
Vigilante movements like Salwa Judum in Dantewada in Bastar Division
have proved disastrous.
The
administrative structure has to be simplified into a single window
system and staffed by a chosen cadre akin to the hastily disbanded
Indian Frontier Administrative Service in the northeast and other
Himalayan borderlands. Further, the development strategy has to be
differently crafted through value addition to traditional tribal
activity and partnership through stakeholder participation of locals
through PESA in the development of the rich mineral, biodiversity and
other natural resources in Fifth Schedule areas under a well-defined
trusteeship regime that brings together the state, tribal communities
and corporate interests that deliver back to the community as much and
more as they take from it.
A
touch-me-not attitude will not work for the tribals or the country.
Committees have reported and their findings are pigeonholed. The Tribal
Forest Rights Act is one silver lining that needs to be pushed forward
and the Fifth Schedule and PESA pressed into service.

India to move for extradition of Headley from US
NEW DELHI/MUMBAI: India has decided to
move for the extradition of US-based terrorists of the Lashkar-e-Taiba -- David
Coleman Headley and
may have done the recce in Mumbai for 26/11 and in New Delhi and other cities
where the LeT had planned similar carnages.
Investigations have
established that besides Mumbai, Delhi, Lucknow, Ahmedabad and Agra, Headley
also visited Pune and Kochi.
The inclusion of Kochi is significant
beacause of Lashkar's plan to target tourist destinations, while Pune should
ring a bell because of the intercepted email echange between Headley and a
Lashkar leader where he was told that a city close to Mumbai could be the
target.
Sources in the home ministry said India would move US for
extradition of Headley and Rana in January after FBI files its report against
Headley in a US court. The authorities are hopeful of a positive response
because Headley and Rana have been charged with using US soil to target India
and Denmark.
As a step towards that end, the National Investigating
Agency lodged a case against them on Wednesday evening.
The decision was
taken in view of the growing belief of agencies here that Headley, who visited
India several times on his US passport (097536400), provided specific details of
targets to the 10 terrorists who savaged Mumbai last year. The precision with
which Ajmal Kasab and other members of the Lashkar gang went about executing
their macabre plan at different Mumbai locations has been an abiding puzzle for
investigators.
Investigations also show his arrest could be
particularly crucial for New Delhi, where he put up at two budget hotels -- De
Holiday Inn and Anand in Paharganj -- the popular destination of backpackers.
Headley came to Delhi from Abu Dhabi on March 7, 2009 and utilized his three-day
stay to gather details on potential targets such as the National Defence
College, as brought out by FBI. The inclusion of the college -- a tempting
target because of the absence of any security worth speaking of -- for the
planned Lashkar attacks was at Headley's insistence.
On 26/11, no
sooner than the terrorists reached the Mumbai coast in an inflatable dinghy,
they divided themselves five groups, each heading for specific assignments with
an ease that pointed to a degree of familiarity with the targets. Investigators
never believed that this could have been possible merely with the help of the
sketches drawn by Fahim Ansari or details provided by Mohammad Sabauddin,
another local Lashkar accomplice. The location of Chabad House, the Jewish
centre that was attacked on the fateful evening, is inconspicuous even for an
average Mumbaikar.
Incidentally, when Headley was arrested, the FBI
recovered from him a copy of a book -- How To Pray Like a Jew -- indicating the
level of preparation he undertook while visiting his targets. Headley might have
carried this book even when he was in Mumbai for a recce of Chabad
House.
The swiftness with which the 26/11 terrorists took the
elevator in Hotel Trident to reach the top floor where they set up a control
centre, has been seen as further evidence of the briefing they must have got.
Investigators suspect that Headley might turn out to be the missing
link.
The FBI affidavit underscores the fact that he had an eye for
detail and was capable of meticulous planning. It mentions how the US-based
Lashkar jehadi, who ditched his name Daood Gilani in 2006 for the one that he
sports now, had drawn an elaborate plan to target the office of the Danish
newspaper, Jyllands Posten, that had published cartoons of Prophet
Mohammad.
In a short visit to the newspaper's Copenhagen office,
Headley did not leave out anything which was crucial to the plot -- from the
nature of security and surveillance at the newspaper's office to his getaway
plan.
It turns out that he may have shown the same diligence while
gathering details that Lashkar used for the 26/11 atrocity. He had an elaborate
cover -- a US national with a Western sounding name offering innocuous
immigration services from a regular location, 29/31 AC Market, Tardeo. He even
hired a thoroughbred Mumbai woman as his secretary to complete the pretence. He
took great care to avoid detection. He did not use landline for 'important'
conversations, and there is no trace of the mobile phone that he is believed to
have used.
Importantly, Headley used the cover of immigration service
as the front also for the Denmark plot, posing as an employee of Rana's
Chicago-based World Immigration Service.
The investigation is crucial
also because it marks a blow to Pakistan's defiant refusal to proceed against
Lashkar. The FBI finding about their links to al-Qaida and their plot against
the Danish newspaper have also repudiated Pakistan's lie that Lashkar is focused
only on J&K.
The agency established the link between Ilyas
Kashmiri, a terrorist who figures quite high on the US's 'wanted' list, and
Lashkar.
While the Americans have been taking a closer look at
Lashkar, especially since 26/11, the estimate here is that they may press
Pakistan for action against Kashmiri, as well as Anwar Saeed and Sajid Mir --
who are believed to be the Lashkar leaders mentioned in the FBI affidavit
against Headley and Rana.
Yeddyurappa spends Rs 1.7 crore to redo home
BANGALORE: Last week, in New Delhi, a

flood victims, but a new revelation shows that the chief minister's priority is
not just selfless service of his state.
An RTI reply has revealed
that Yeddyurappa has been equally committed to improving his own living
quarters. He spent a staggering Rs 1.7 crore to renovate his bungalow, Rs 35
lakh of which went into redoing his bedroom. Going by the current austerity
norms for politicians, Yeddyurappa's generous spend is unlikely to make him a
role model.
This is how the bill for doing up Yeddurappa's residence
on Devaraj Urs Road (Race Course) adds up: Renovation and fittings of the master
bedroom cost Rs 34.55 lakh. This includes toilet works and interiors at Rs 10
lakh, marble flooring at Rs 10 lakh, a false ceiling and wall designs at Rs 4.40
lakh and Rs 10.15 lakh for gypsum board and wall panelling.
In an
earlier report, TOI had revealed that the Karnataka government had incurred an
expense of nearly Rs 1 crore for holding a cabinet meeting in Gulbarga last
year, of which Rs 28 lakh was spent on floral decorations alone.
The RTI
also revealed that another Rs 14.65 lakh was spent to improve "bedroom number 2"
in the CM's official residence. This has marble flooring for Rs 10 lakh and Rs
4.65 lakh on imported wall papers. In all, Rs 1.69 crore was spent on
renovation.
While Yeddyurappa has preferred to stay in this house
after becoming CM, uncertainty over whether he would continue in the Race Course
Road bungalow or shift to "Anugraha" (designated residence for CMs) near Sankey
Road, saw the government spend Rs 9 lakh for toilet works at the latter, besides
spending Rs 10 lakh to paint that house. "Anugraha" has now been occupied by
Yeddyurappa loyalist and home minister V S Acharya.
After the BJP
government came to power in May 2008, the total sanctioned "estimate amount" for
the renovation, repairs and improvements of official residences of all
ministers, including Yeddyurappa, has been over Rs 10 crore. Not all ministers
are residing in official bungalows, though. While revenue minister G Karunakara
Reddy has a flair for wardrobes and has fitted his bedrooms at a cost of Rs 8.08
lakh and put in sanitary fittings worth Rs 7.20 lakh, social welfare minister D
Sudhakar went for a modular kitchen, priced at Rs 4.41 lakh.
Even
Speaker Jagadish Shettar has not lagged behind. A sum of Rs 4.70 lakh has been
spent on the wardrobe and storage cabinet at his residence, "Cauvery" on
Kumarakrupa Road.
While Yeddyurappa leads the field, he is followed
by Karunakara Reddy at Rs 88.26 lakh. Health minister B Sriramulu and energy
minister K S Eshwarappa have turned out be most cost conscious ministers, having
spent Rs 3 lakh and Rs 6 lakh, respectively, on their
residences.

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar 
pronunciation (help·info) (Marathi: सचिन रमेश तेंडुलकर) (born April 24, 1973 in Mumbai) is an Indian cricketer widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. He is the leading run-scorer and century maker in Test and One Day International cricket.[6][7][8] In 2002, Wisden ranked him the second greatest Test batsman of all time, next to Donald Bradman, and the second greatest one day international (ODI) batsman of all time, next to Viv Richards.[9] In September 2007, the Australian leg spinner Shane Warne rated Tendulkar as the greatest player he has played with or against.[10] Tendulkar was the only player of the current generation to be included in Bradman's Eleven.[nb 1] He is sometimes referred to as Little Master or Master Blaster.[12][13]
Tendulkar is the highest run scorer in both Test matches and ODIs,
and also the batsman with the most centuries in either form of the
game. The first player to score fifty centuries in all international
cricket combined, he now has eighty-seven international centuries.
On October 17, 2008, when he surpassed Brian Lara's
record for the most runs scored in Test Cricket, he also became the
first batsman to score 12,000 runs in that form of the game,[14] having also been the third batsman and first Indian to pass 11,000 runs in Test cricket.[15]
He was also the first player to score 10,000 runs in one-day
internationals, and also the first player to cross every subsequent
1000-run mark that has been crossed in ODI cricket history. In the
fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, Tendulkar
surpassed Australia's Allan Border
to become the player to cross the 50-run mark the most number of times
in Test cricket history, and also the second ever player to score 10
Test centuries against Australia, after only Sir Jack Hobbs of England more than 70 years back.[16] Tendulkar has been honored with the Padma Vibhushan award, India's second highest civilian award, and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, India's highest sporting honor.
Early years and personal life
Tendulkar was born in Bombay (now Mumbai). His father, Ramesh Tendulkar, a Marathi novelist, named Tendulkar after his favourite music director, Sachin Dev Burman.
Tendulkar's elder brother Ajit encouraged him to play cricket.
Tendulkar has two other siblings: a brother Nitin, and sister Savitai.
Tendulkar attended Sharadashram Vidyamandir (High School)[1], where he began his cricketing career under the guidance of his coach and mentor, Ramakant Achrekar. During his school days he attended the MRF Pace Foundation to train as a fast bowler, but Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee, who took a world record 355 Test wickets, was unimpressed, suggesting that Tendulkar focus on his batting instead.[17]
When he was young, Tendulkar would practice for hours on end in the nets. If he became exhausted, Achrekar would put a one-Rupee-coin on the top of the stumps,
and the bowler who dismissed Tendulkar would get the coin. If Tendulkar
passed the whole session without getting dismissed, the coach would
give him the coin. Tendulkar now considers the 13 coins he won then as
some of his most prized possessions.[18]
While at school, he developed a reputation as a child prodigy. He
had become a common conversation point in Mumbai circles, where there
were suggestions already that he would become one of the greats. His
season in 1988 was extraordinary, with Tendulkar scoring a century in
every innings he played. He was involved in an unbroken 664-run partnership in a Lord Harris Shield inter-school game in 1988 with friend and team mate Vinod Kambli,
who would also go on to represent India. The destructive pair reduced
one bowler to tears and made the rest of the opposition unwilling to
continue the game. Tendulkar scored 326* in this innings and scored
over a thousand runs in the tournament.[19] This was a record partnership in any form of cricket until 2006, when it was broken by two under-13 batsmen in a match held at Hyderabad in India.
When he was 14, Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar
gave him a pair of his own ultra light pads. "It was the greatest
source of encouragement for me," he said nearly 20 years later after
surpassing Gavaskar's top world record of 34 Test centuries.[20] In 1995, Sachin Tendulkar married Anjali (born November 10, 1967), a paediatrician
and daughter of Gujarati industrialist Anand Mehta. They have two
children, Sara (born October 12, 1997), and Arjun (born September 24,
1999).[21]
Tendulkar sponsors 200 underprivileged children every year through Apnalaya, a Mumbai-based NGO associated with his mother-in-law, Annaben Mehta. [22]
Early domestic career
On December 11, 1988, aged just 15 years and 232 days, Tendulkar scored 100 not out in his debut first-class match for Bombay against Gujarat,
making him the youngest Indian to score a century on first-class debut.
He followed this by scoring a century in his first Deodhar and Duleep
Trophy. [23]. He was picked by the Mumbai captain Dilip Vengsarkar after seeing him negotiate Kapil Dev in the nets.[1], and finished the season as Bombay's highest run-scorer.[24][25] He also made an unbeaten century in the Irani Trophy final,[26] and was selected for the tour of Pakistan next year, after just one first class season.[27]
His first double century was for Mumbai while playing against the visiting Australian team at the Brabourne Stadium in 1998.[1] He is the only player to score a century in all three of his Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy and Irani Trophy debuts.[28]
In 1992, at the age of 19, Tendulkar became the first overseas born player to represent Yorkshire[1][29] Tendulkar played 16 first-class matches for the county and scored 1070 runs at an average of 46.52.[30]
International career
Early career
Tendulkar played his first Test match against Pakistan in Karachi in 1989 aged just 16.He made just 15 runs, being bowled by Waqar Younis,
who also made his debut in that match, but was noted for how he handled
numerous blows to his body at the hands of the Pakistani pace attack.[31]
In the final test in Sialkot, he was hit on the nose by a bouncer, but
he declined medical assistance and continued to bat even as he gushed
blood from it.[32] In a 20 over exhibition game in Peshawar, Tendulkar made 53 runs of 18 balls, including an over in which he scored 28 runs off Abdul Qadir[33]. This was later called "one of the best innings I have seen" by the then Indian captain Kris Srikkanth.[34] In all, he scored 215 runs at an average of 35.83 in the Test series, and was dismissed without scoring a run in the only One Day International he played.[35][36]
The series was followed by a tour of New Zealand in which he scored
117 runs at an average of 29.25 in, Tests including an innings of 88 in
the Second Test.[37] He was dismissed without scroing in one the two one-day games he played, and scored 36 in the other. [38] On his next tour, to England in 1990, he became the second youngest cricketer to score a Test century as he made 119* at Old Trafford.[32]Wisden described his innings as "a disciplined display of immense maturity" and also wrote:[39]
"He looked the embodiment of India's famous opener, Gavaskar, and
indeed was wearing a pair of his pads. While he displayed a full
repertoire of strokes in compiling his maiden Test hundred, most
remarkable were his off-side shots from the back foot. Though only 5ft
5in tall, he was still able to control without difficulty short
deliveries from the English paceman."
Tendulkar further enhanced his development during the 1991–1992 tour of Australia, that included an unbeaten 148 in Sydney and a century on a fast, bouncing pitch at Perth. Merv Hughes commented to Allan Border at the time that "This little prick's going to get more runs than you, AB."[40]
Rise through the ranks
Tendulkar waits at the bowler's end.
Tendulkar's performance through the years 1994–1999 coincided with
his physical peak, in his early twenties. On the day of the Hindu
festival Holi, Tendulkar was told to open the batting at Auckland against New Zealand in 1994.[41] He went on to make 82 runs off 49 balls. He scored his first ODI century on September 9, 1994 against Australia in Sri Lanka at Colombo. It had taken him 79 ODIs to score a century.
In 1996 against Pakistan in Sharjah, Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin was going through a lean patch. Tendulkar and Navjot Singh Sidhu
both made centuries to set a record partnership for the second wicket.
After getting out, Tendulkar found Azharuddin in two minds to bat out.
Tendulkar boosted Azharuddin to bat and Azharuddin subsequently
unleashed 29 runs in mere 10 balls. It enabled India post a score in
excess of 300 runs for the first time. India went on to win that match.
Tendulkar's rise continued when he was the leading run scorer at the 1996 Cricket World Cup,
topping the batting averages whilst scoring two centuries. He was the
only Indian batsman to perform in the infamous semi-final of that World
Cup. When Tendulkar's wicket fell, the Indian batting lineup collapsed
and India conceded defeat after the crowd began angry demonstrations.
This was the beginning of a period at the top of the batting world,
culminating in the Australian tour of India in early 1998, with
Tendulkar scoring three consecutive centuries. These were characterized
by a premeditated plan to target Australian spinners Shane Warne and Gavin Robertson,
to whom he regularly charged down the pitch to drive over the infield.
This technique worked as India beat Australia. The test match success
was followed by two scintillating knocks in Sharjah where he scored two
consecutive centuries in a must-win game and then in finals against
Australia tormenting Shane Warne once again. Following the series Warne
ruefully joked that he was having nightmares about his Indian nemesis.[42]
He also had a role with the ball in that series, including a 5 wicket
haul in an ODI. Set 310 runs to win, Australia were cruising
comfortably at 3 for 203 in the 31st over when Tendulkar turned the
match for India taking wickets of Michael Bevan, Steve Waugh, Darren Lehmann, Tom Moody and Damien Martyn for just 32 runs in 10 overs.[43]
Tendulkar single-handedly won the ICC 1998 quarterfinal at Dhaka to pave way for India's entry into the semifinals, when he took 4 Australian wickets after scoring 141 runs in just 128 balls.
A chronic back problem flared up when Pakistan toured India in 1999, with India losing the historic Test at Chepauk
despite a gritty century from Tendulkar himself. The worst was yet to
come as Professor Ramesh Tendulkar, Tendulkar's father, died in the
middle of the 1999 Cricket World Cup. Tendulkar flew back to India to attend the final rituals of his father, missing the match against Zimbabwe.
However, he returned with a bang to the World cup scoring a century
(unbeaten 140 off 101 balls) in his very next match against Kenya in Bristol. He dedicated this century to his father.[44]
Captaincy
Tendulkar's two tenures as captain of the Indian cricket team were
not very successful. When Tendulkar took over as Captain in 1996, it
was with huge hopes and expectations. However, by 1997 the team was
performing poorly. Azharuddin was credited with saying "Nahin jeetega! Chote ki naseeb main jeet nahin hai!",[45] which translates into: "He won't win! It's not in the small one's destiny".
Tendulkar, succeeding Azharuddin as captain for his second term,
then led India on a tour of Australia, where the visitors were
comprehensively beaten 3-0 by the newly-crowned world champions.[46]
Tendulkar, however, was at his usual best and won the player of the
tournament award as well as player of the match in one of the games.
After another Test series defeat, this time by a 0-2 margin at home
against South Africa, Tendulkar resigned, and Sourav Ganguly took over as captain in 2000.
Tendulkar remains an integral part of the Indian team's strategic
processes. He is often seen in discussion with the captain, at times
actively involved in building strategies. Former captain Rahul Dravid publicly acknowledged that Tendulkar had been suggesting moves such as the promotion of Irfan Pathan up the batting order which, although only temporary, had an immediate effect on the team's fortunes.
Injuries
Tendulkar continued his good form in Test cricket in 2001 and 2002,
with some pivotal performances with both bat and ball. Tendulkar took
three wickets on the final day of the famous Kolkata Test against Australia in 2001. Tendulkar took the key wickets of Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist, centurions in the previous test.
Tendulkar made 673 runs in 11 matches in the 2003 Cricket World Cup,
helping India reach the final. While Australia retained the trophy that
they had won in 1999, Tendulkar was given the Man of the Tournament
award. The drawn series as India toured Australia in 2003/04 saw
Tendulkar making his mark in the last Test of the series, with 241* in Sydney,
putting India in a virtually unbeatable position. He followed up the
innings with an unbeaten 50 in the second innings of the test and then
an unbeaten 194 against Pakistan at Multan
in the following series. The 194 was controversial in that he was
stranded prior to reaching his double century as a result of a declaration by Rahul Dravid.
In meeting with the press that evening, Tendulkar responded to a
question on missing 200 against Pakistan by stating that he was
disappointed and that the declaration had taken him by surprise.[47] Many former cricketers commented that Dravid's declaration was in bad taste.[48][49] The media noted at the time that the decision had apparently been made by Sourav Ganguly,[50] and Ganguly himself later admitted that it had been a mistake.[51]
The controversy was put to rest when Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and
coach John Wright spoke to the media after the team's victory and
stated that the matter was spoken internally and put to rest.[52]
Although he was in strong form, tennis elbow
then took its toll on Tendulkar, leaving him out of the side for most
of the year, coming back only for the last two tests when Australia toured India in 2004. He played a part in India's victory in Mumbai in that series, though Australia took the series 2-1.
On December 10, 2005 at Feroz Shah Kotla, Tendulkar scored his record-breaking 35th Test century, against the Sri Lankans.
On February 6, 2006, he scored his 39th ODI hundred, in a match against
Pakistan. He followed with a run-a-ball 42 in the second one-day
international against Pakistan on February 11, 2006, and then a 95 in
hostile, seaming conditions on February 13, 2006 in Lahore, which set
up an Indian victory.
On March 19, 2006, after scoring an unconvincing 1 off 21 balls against England in the first innings of the third Test in his home ground, Wankhede, Tendulkar was booed off the ground by a section of the crowd,[53][54]
the first time that he had ever faced such flak. Tendulkar was to end
the three-Test series without a single half-century to his credit, and
news of a shoulder operation raised more questions about his longevity.
Tendulkar was operated upon for his injured shoulder. In July 2006, the
Board of Control for Cricket in India
(BCCI) announced that Tendulkar had overcome his injury problem
following a rehabilitation programme and was available for selection,
and he was eventually selected for the next series.
Comeback
Tendulkar's comeback came in the DLF cup in Malaysia
and he was the only Indian batsman to shine. In his comeback match,
against West Indies on September 14, 2006, Tendulkar responded to his
critics who believed that his career was inexorably sliding with his
40th ODI century. Though he scored 141*, West Indies won the
rain-affected match by the D/L method.
In the preparation for the 2007 Cricket World Cup, Tendulkar was criticized by Greg Chappell on his attitude.[55]
As per the report, Chappell felt that Tendulkar would be more useful
down the order, while the latter felt that he would be better off
opening the innings, the role he had played for most of his career.
Chappell also believed that Tendulkar's repeated failures were hurting
the team's chances. In a rare show of emotion, Tendulkar hit out at the
comments attributed to Chappell by pointing out that no coach has ever
suggested his attitude towards cricket is incorrect. On April 7, 2007,
the Board of Control for Cricket in India issued a notice to Tendulkar
asking for an explanation for his comments made to the media.[56]
At the Cricket World Cup 2007 in the West Indies, Tendulkar and the Indian cricket team, led by Rahul Dravid had a dismal campaign. Tendulkar, who was pushed to bat lower down the order by the Greg Chappell had scores of 7 (Bangladesh), 57* (Bermuda) and 0 (Sri Lanka). As a result, former Australian captain Ian Chappell, brother of the then Indian coach Greg, called for Tendulkar to retire in his column for Mumbai's Mid Day newspaper.[57]
In the subsequent series against Bangladesh, Tendulkar returned to
his opening slot and was Man of the Series. He continued by scoring two
consecutive scores of 90+ in the Future Cup against South Africa. He
was the leading run scorer and was adjudged the Man of the Series.[58]

On the second day of the Nottingham Test (July 28, 2007) Tendulkar became the third cricketer to complete 11,000 Test runs.[59] In the subsequent One day series against England, Tendulkar was the leading run scorer from India[60]
with an average of 53.42. In the ODI Series against Australia in
October 2007 Tendulkar was the leading Indian run scorer with 278 runs.[61]
Tendulkar was dismissed seven times in 2007 between 90 and 100,
including three times at 99, leading some to suggest that he struggles
to cope with nerves in this phase of his career. Tendulkar has got out
23 times between 90 and 100 in his international career. On November 8,
2007 he got out on 99 against Pakistan in an ODI at Mohali to the
bowling of Umar Gul caught by Kamran Akmal. In the fourth ODI, he got
out on 97 (off 102 balls with 16 fours) after dragging a delivery from
Umar Gul on to his stumps, falling short of another century in ODIs in
2007.
2007/08 tour of Australia
In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, 2007-08,
Tendulkar showed exceptional form, becoming the leading run scorer with
493 runs in four Tests, despite consistently failing in the second
innings. Sachin scored 62 runs in the first innings of the first Test
at the MCG in Melbourne, but couldn't prevent a heavy 337-run win for
Australia. In the controversial New Years Test at Sydney,
Tendulkar scored an unbeaten 154 as India lost the Test. This was his
third century at the SCG, earning him an average of 221.33 at the
ground. In the third Test at the WACA in Perth, Sachin was instrumental
in India's first innings score of 330, scoring a well compiled 71, only
to be dismissed by what was later confirmed to be a questionable LBW
decision. India went on to record a historic triumph at the WACA. In
the fourth Test at Adelaide, which ended in a draw, he scored 153 in
the first innings, involving in a crucial 126 run stand with V.V.S.
Laxman for the fifth wicket to lead India to a score of 282 for 5 from
156 for 4. He secured the Player of the Match award.
In the One-Day International Commonwealth Bank Tri-Series involving
Sri Lanka and Australia, Tendulkar became the first and only batsman to
complete 16,000 runs in ODIs. He achieved this feat against Sri Lanka
on February 5, 2008 at Brisbane. He started the CB series well notching
up scores of 10, 35, 44 and 32, but could not convert the starts into
bigger scores. His form dipped a bit in the middle of the tournament,
but Tendulkar came back strongly in India's must-win game against Sri
Lanka at Hobart, scoring 63 off 54 balls. He finished the series with a
match winning 117 not out off 120 balls in the first final,[62] and 91 runs in the second final.[63]
Home series against South Africa
In the first test of a three-test series against South Africa at
home, Tendulkar made a duck in the first innings. He missed the rest of
the series, which was drawn 1-1, with an injury.
Indian Premier League
Tendulkar was made the icon player and captain for his home side, the Mumbai Indians in the inaugural Indian Premier League Twenty20 competition in 2008.[64] As an icon player, he was signed for a sum of US$1,121,250, 15% more than the second-highest paid player in the team, Sanath Jayasuriya.[65]
Sri Lanka Series
Before the three-Test series in Sri Lanka in mid-2008, Tendulkar
needed just 177 runs to go past Brian Lara's record of 11,953 runs in
test cricket. However, he failed in all six innings, scoring a total of
just 95 runs. India lost 1-2.
Return to form and breaking the record
In the following ODI series against Sri Lanka, Tendulkar was
sidelined due to injury. However, during the following Australia tour
of India, he returned to fitness and form, scoring 13 and 49 in the
first test before making 88 in the first innings of the second test,
thus breaking the record for most number of Test runs held by Brian
Lara. He also reached the 12,000 run mark when he was on 61. He made a
fifty in the third test and 109 in the fourth, as India won the series
2-0 and regained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
ODI and Test Series against England
Tendulkar was again out due to injury from the first three ODIs of a
7-match ODI series at home against England, but he made 11 in the
fourth ODI and 50 in the fifth, before the ODI series was called off
due to the Mumbai terror attacks, the scoreline being 5-0 to India.
England returned for a 2-match test series in December 2008, and in the
first test in Chennai, chasing 387 for victory, Tendulkar made 103 not
out in a 163-run unbroken fifth wicket stand with Yuvraj Singh. This
was his third century in a fourth match innings, and the first which
resulted in a win. This was redemption for the Chennai Test of 1999
when chasing 271 against Pakistan, Sachin had made 136 with severe back
pain and was out 17 runs short of the target, precipitating a collapse
and a loss by 12 runs. He dedicated this century to the victims of the
Mumbai terror attacks. Tendulkar failed in both innings in the second
test, India won the series 1-0.
Sri Lanka ODIs again
In early 2009, India revisited Sri Lanka for 5 ODIs, as the Pakistan
series had been cancelled due to the security situation in Pakistan and
the attacks in Mumbai. In the first 3 ODIs, Sachin made 5,6 and 7,
being incorrectly given out LBW on all three occasions. Then he was
injured again.
New Zealand Series
India's next assignment was the away series against New Zealand. It
consisted of 3 Tests and 5 ODIs. In the ODI series, Tendulkar started
off with 20 in the first match followed by 61 in the second. Then he
made a 163 not out in the third ODI, an innings ended by stomach cramps
that forced him to retire hurt. India made 392 and won easily. Sachin
was out of the next two ODIs due to injury but India won the series 3-1
with one game washed out. Tendulkar made 160 in the first test, his
42nd Test century, and India won. He made 49 and 64 in the second test
and 62 and 9 in the third, in which India were prevented from winning
by rain on the last day.India won the series 1-0.
Compaq Cup in Sri Lanka
Tendulkar rested himself for the ODI tour of West Indies, but was
back for the Compaq Cup (Tri Series) between India, SL and New Zealand
in early September 2009. He made 46 and 27 in the league matches before
notching up 138 in the final, as India made 319 and won by 46 runs.
This was Tendulkar's 6th century in ODI finals and his third
consecutive score of over 50 in such finals. India has won all six
times that Tendulkar has made a hundred in an ODI final.
ICC Champions Trophy 2009
Tendulkar played just one innings in the ICC Champions trophy in
South Africa, scoring 8 against Pakistan as India lost. The next match
against Australia was washed out and he was out with food poisoning in
the third match against the Windies, as India were eliminated after
beating the Windies and finishing third in their group.
India-Australia ODI Series
Australia returned for a 7-match ODI series in India in October, and Tendulkar made 14, 4, 32 and 40 in the first four games.
In the fifth match, with the series tied at 2-2, Australia amassed
350/4 in 50 overs. Tendulkar made his 45th ODI hundred, a 175 off just
141 balls. Just when it seemed that he would steer India to the large
victory target, he paddle-scooped debutant bowler Clint McKay
straight to short fine leg, with India needing 19 from 18 balls with
four wickets left. The Indian tail collapsed, and they lost by 3 runs,
being all out for 347.
During this match, Tendulkar also became the first player to reach
17000 ODI runs, and achieved his personal best against Australia, as
well as the third highest score in a defeat. He described it as one of
his best innings but said it could have been better had India won the
match.
Style of play
Tendulkar plays a wristy leg-side flick
Tendulkar is ambidextrous: He bats, bowls and throws with his right hand, but writes with his left hand.[66] He also practices left-handed throws at the nets on a regular basis. Cricinfo columnist Sambit Bal has described him as the "most wholesome batsman of his time".[1]
His batting is based on complete balance and poise while limiting
unnecessary movements and flourishes. He appears to show little
preference for the slow and low wickets which are typical in India, and
has scored many centuries on the hard, bouncy pitches in South Africa
and Australia.[1]
He is known for his unique punch style of hitting the ball over square.
He is also renowned for his picture-perfect straight drive, often
completed with no follow-through. Recently, legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar, in an article he wrote in the AFP,
remarked that "it is hard to imagine any player in the history of the
game who combines classical technique with raw aggression like the
little champion does".[5]
Sir Donald Bradman,
considered by many the greatest batsman of all time, considered
Tendulkar to have a batting style similar to his. In his biography, it
is stated that "Bradman was most taken by Tendulkar's technique, compactness and shot production, and had asked his wife to have a look at Tendulkar, having felt that Tendulkar played like him. Bradman's wife, Jessie, agreed that they did appear similar."[67][68]

Former Australian cricket team coach John Buchanan voiced his opinion that Tendulkar had become susceptible to the short ball early in his innings because of a lack of footwork.[69] Buchanan also believes Tendulkar has a weakness while playing left-arm pace.[69]
He was affected by a series of injuries since 2004. Since then
Tendulkar's batting has tended to be less attacking. Explaining this
change in his batting style, he has acknowledged that he is batting
differently due to that fact that (1) No batsman can bat the same way
for the entire length of a long career and (2) He is a senior member of
the team now and thus has more responsibility. During the early part of
his career he was a more attacking batsman and frequently scored
centuries at close to a run a ball. Ian Chappell, former Australian player, recently remarked that "Tendulkar now, is nothing like the player he was when he was a young bloke".[70]
However, during the latest tour of Australia in 2008, Tendulkar
displayed glimpses of his attacking style with several masterful
innings, dominating attacks in a manner reminiscent of his younger days.
While Tendulkar is not a regular bowler, he is adept at bowling medium pace, leg spin, and off spin
with equal ease. He often bowls when two batsmen of the opposite team
have been batting together for a long period, as he can often be a
useful partnership breaker. With his bowling, he has helped secure an
Indian victory on more than one occasion.[71] He has taken 44 test match wickets and is the 9th highest wicket taker for India in ODIs.[72]

Sachin Tendulkar is the most prolific run scorer in one-day
internationals with 17,168 runs. With a current aggregate of 12,773
Test runs, he surpassed Brian Lara's previous record tally of 11,953 runs as the highest run scorer in test matches in the second Test of Australia's 2008 tour of India in Mohali.[14] [73] Sachin described “It is definitely the biggest achievement in 19 years of my career” on the day he achieved the record.[74]
He also holds the record of highest number of centuries in both Test
(42) and ODI cricket (45). Throughout his career, he has made a strong
impact on Indian cricket and was, at one time, the foundation of most
of the team's victories. In recognition with his impact on sport in a
cricket-loving country like India, Tendulkar has been granted the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award, Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India. He was also elected Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1997 and is ranked by the objective scoring method of the Wisden 100 as the second best test batsman and best ODI batsman of all time.
Tendulkar has also consistently done well in Cricket World Cups. Tendulkar was the highest run scorer of the 2003 Cricket World Cup and 1996 Cricket World Cup.
Tendulkar has scored over 1000 runs in a calendar year in ODIs 7 times,
and in 1998 he scored 1894 runs, easily the record for the highest
number of runs scored by any player in a single calendar year for one
day internationals. Tendulkar is also one of the very few players who
are still playing in international cricket from the 1980s.
He has been Man of the Match 11 times in Test matches and Man of the Series 4 times,[75] out of them twice in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. The performances earned him respect from Australian cricket fans and players.[40] Similarly he has been Man of the Match 60 times in One day International matches and Man of the Series 14 times.

In January 2008, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown suggested that Sachin should be conferred with an honorary knighthood for his contribution to international cricket.[81] He was mentioned in the TIME magazine as the "The greatest living exponent of his craft."[82]
Praise by other cricketers
In September 2007, former Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne
published his list of the 50 greatest cricketers who had played during
his time, in which Tendulkar had secured the number 1 spot.[10] Sunil Gavaskar, one of the greatest Indian Test batsmen, regarded as Tendulkar as being the "closest thing to batting perfection."[83]
Shane Warne had mentioned a decade back, "I'll be going to bed having
nightmares of Sachin just running down the wicket and belting me back
over the head for six. He was unstoppable. I don't think anyone, apart
from Don Bradman, is in the same class as Sachin Tendulkar. He is just
an amazing player."[84][85][86] He has received such appreciations from various other cricketers, including Wasim Akram who said "Cricketers like Sachin come once in a lifetime and I am privileged he played in my time."[85], Viv Richards who said "He is 99.5 percent perfect. I'd pay to see him."[87], Brian Lara who said "You know genius when you see it. And let me tell you, Sachin is pure genius."[82], and Barry Richards who said "Sachin is cricket's God." [85] Former New Zealand all-rounder Richard Hadlee believes Sachin Tendulkar is the greatest batsman ever to grace the game.[88] Former Australian captain Steve Waugh has said in the past that Tendulkar will go down in history as the best ever batsman after Bradman. Former South African great Allan Donald considers Tendulkar to be the best batsman he has ever bowled to.[89] Current Australian captain Ricky Ponting too believes that Tendulkar is the best batsman he has seen or played against.[90]
Controversies
Mike Denness incident
In the second test of India's 2001 tour of South Africa, match referee Mike Denness fined four Indian players for excessive appealing as well as the Indian captain Sourav Ganguly for not controlling his team.[91] Tendulkar was given a suspended ban of one game in light of alleged ball tampering.
Television cameras picked up images that suggested Tendulkar may have
been involved in cleaning the seam of the cricket ball in the second test match between India and South Africa at St George's Park, Port Elizabeth.[92] This can, under some conditions, amount to altering the condition of the ball. The match referee Mike Denness found Sachin Tendulkar guilty of ball tampering charges and handed him a one Test match ban.[93] The incident escalated to include allegations of racism,[94] and led to Mike Denness being barred from entering the venue of the third test match. After a thorough investigation, the International Cricket Council
revoked the official status of the match and the ban on Tendulkar was
lifted. Tendulkar's ball tampering charges and Sehwag's ban for
excessive appealing triggered a massive backlash from the Indian public
and even the Indian parliament.[95]
Controversy over Ferrari customs waiver
In commemorating Sachin Tendulkar's feat of equalling Don Bradman's 29 centuries in Test Cricket, automotive giant Ferrari invited Sachin Tendulkar to its paddock in Silverstone on the eve of the British Grand Prix (July 23, 2002) to receive a Ferrari 360 Modena from the legendary F1 racer Michael Schumacher.[96] On September 4, 2002 India's then finance minister Jaswant Singh wrote to Sachin telling him that the government will waive customs duty imposed on the car as a measure to applaud his feat.[97]
However the rules at the time stated that the customs duty can be
waived only when receiving an automobile as a prize and not as a gift.
It is claimed that the proposals to change the law (Customs Act) was
put forth in Financial Bill in February 2003 and amended was passed as
a law in May 2003. Subsequently the Ferrari was allowed to be brought
to India without payment of the customs duty (Rs 1.13 Crores or 120% on
the car value of Rs 75 Lakhs).[98] When the move to waive customs duty became public in July 2003, political and social activists protested the waiver[99] and filed PIL in the Delhi High Court. With the controversy snowballing, Sachin offered to pay the customs duty and the tab was finally picked up by Ferrari.[100] Tendulkar has been seen taking his Ferrari 360 Modena for late-night drives in Mumbai.
Fan following
Sachin Tendulkar's entry into world cricket was very much hyped up
by former Indian stars and those who had seen him play. By scoring his
first half-century in his second match and his first century aged 17,
Tendulkar's consistent performances earned him a fan following across
the globe, including amongst Australian crowds, where Tendulkar has
consistently scored centuries.[40] One of the most popular sayings by Sachin's fans is "Cricket is my religion and Sachin is my God".[81] Cricinfo mentions in his profile that "...Tendulkar remains, by a distance, the most worshipped cricketer in the world."[101]
At home in Mumbai, Tendulkar's fan following is so great that he is unable to lead a normal life. Ian Chappell
has said that he would be unable to cope with the lifestyle Tendulkar
was forced to lead, having to "wear a wig and go out and watch a movie
only at night".[70]
In an interview with Tim Sheridan, Tendulkar admitted that he sometimes
went for quiet drives in the streets of Mumbai late at night when he
would be able to enjoy some peace and silence.[102]
Business interests
Tendulkar's immense popularity has led him to numerous profitable
business dealings in the past. He currently has the most sponsorships
out of all players in world cricket. Sachin Tendulkar was an early
pioneer in India on cricket business dealings when he signed a then
record sports management deal with Worldtel in 1995, the value of the
deal being 30 crore rupees over 5 years.[103] His next contract with WorldTel in 2001 was valued at 80 crores over 5 years.[104] In 2006, he signed a contract with Saatchi and Saatchi's ICONIX values at 180 crores over 3 years.[105] He is the highest earning cricketer in the world.
Making use of his popularity, Tendulkar has opened two restaurants: 'Tendulkar's'[106] (Colaba, Mumbai) & 'Sachin's'[107] (Mulund, Mumbai).
Sachin owns these restaurants in partnership with Sanjay Narang of Mars
Restaurants. He has also got a new restaurant in Bangalore called
Sachin's.
In 2007, Tendulkar also announced a JV
with the Future Group and Manipal Group to launch healthcare and sports
fitness products under the brand name 'S Drive and Sach'.[108] A series of comic books by Virgin Comics is also due to be published featuring him as a superhero.[109]
