Sign Petition Protesting Terror Against Christians in Orissa

Sign Petition Protesting Terror Against Christians in Orissa

To: The President of India
To

The President of India

It is with deep concern and dismay that we hear the recent news pouring out from Orissa.

The atrocities perpetrated by the Sangha Parivar and Hindu fundamentalist outfits, against Christian community and their Missionaries in the state is a threat to our national unity and shame for our secular entity.

Hundreds of Christians have been chased out of their homes and attacked and looted. When the carnage enters into the fourth consecutive day, scores are dead and many missing. Attack against the Christian community runs unabated.

We request you to immediately direct the central and state government apparatus to contain these unfortunate (but intentionally master-planned) attacks against the Christian community and also use your offices to thwart any other such incidents from happening, in the future.

We request all secular and democratic forces of the country, intellectuals, media, to sign and express your solidarity against the attempts by VHP/BJP/Hindutwa outfits that are spreading and spearheading their long-held agenda of communal hate and religious fundamentalism.

We stand for a united India, in which all communities could live alongside each other in complete trust, unity and brotherhood.

We also appeal to the leaders of Hindu community to restrain their hooligans, whose doings would help only to make the whole nation bow our heads in perpetual shame.

Sincerely,

[NorthEastIndia] Nagaland: India's lost world (Guardian Weekly)

An article in the Guardian Weekly

The Naga, a group of tribes for whom the ancient customs of headhunting, giant log drum making, and spiritual healing are still a way of life, are found in the remote hills of northeast India. Nagaland has been closed to outsiders for a long time, accessible only to those with special permits. But recently two explorers travelled into its heartland. During their visit, Peter van Ham and Jamie Saul kept diaries that record their interactions with these complex and diverse people

SCIENTISTS are trying to stop the most powerful experiment ever – saying the black holes it will create could destroy the world.

Dubbed by some the Doomsday test, it will be carried out next week in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), located 300ft underground near the French-Swiss border.

The machine is 17 miles long and cost £4.4billion to create.

When its switch is pulled on September 10, this atom-smasher will become a virtual time machine, revealing what happened when the universe came into existence 14 billion years ago.

New particles of matter are expected to be discovered, new dimensions found beyond the four known, as scientists re-create conditions in the first BILLIONTHS of a second after the Big Bang.

The atom smasher ... the 17-mile-long machine that some fear will destroy our planet

The atom smasher ... the 17-mile-long machine that some fear will destroy our planet

Experts even predict that millions of tiny black holes will be produced — baby brothers of the monsters gobbling up dust and stars at the heart of the galaxies.
Secrets

That is why boffins are now trying to stop the project with a last-ditch challenge in the courts.

They fear the LHC experimenters are tinkering with the unknown and putting mankind — and our whole planet — at risk.

The group responsible for the experiment, the European Nuclear Research Centre (CERN), says that these mini black holes will vanish as quickly as they are created.

But the anti-CERN brigade accuse the scientists of playing God, warning that no one can guarantee that the black holes will not survive, rapidly growing in size to suck the Earth out of existence in an instant.

But CERN, which includes several UK scientists, say their work is vital to unlock the secrets of matter that forms everything known in the universe.

In the experiment, atomic particles will be fired in opposite directions along the 17-mile long underground ring — the length of the Circle Line on the London Underground.

They will travel so fast that they make 11,245 trips around the tunnel every SECOND.

From the collisions, boffins expect to discover a fundamental bit of the atom, called the Higgs boson, that is expected to exist but which has never been seen.

Professor Otto Rossler, from the Eberhard Karls University of Tubingen in Germany, is one of the scientists mounting the legal challenge at the European Court of Human Rights against 20 countries which are funding the project.

He said: “It is quite plausible that these little black holes will survive and will grow and eat the planet from the inside out.”

A CERN spokesman said: “It will not be producing anything that does not already happen routinely in nature.”

50,000 Christians hiding in forests, 4,000 houses and 100 churches burnt by Hindu mobs

PRESS NOTE
New Delhi, September 1, 2008

Citizen’s Delegation meets President Pratibha Patil; Demands that
Indian Government use Article 355 to force Orissa administration to
protect Christians

Violence continues even now, President is told by delegation led by
Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, Maulana Mahmood Madani, MP, and Orissa
Archbishop Cheenath.

300 villages burnt, 4,014 houses destroyed, 50,000 Christians hiding
in Forests in a week

A Citizens Delegation met President Pratibha Patil on Monday morning
calling upon her to enforce Article 355 of the Constitution of India
on Orissa so that the Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik administration
takes adequate measures to protect Christians in the state from
Hindutva violence..

The best legal opinion available to the delegation held that while
Article 356 calls for imposition of President’s rule when New Delhi
takes over reins of power, Article 355 reminds both New Delhi and
state governments of their duties to protect States against internal
disturbance and should be brought into force now.

The delegation reminded the President that the violence that has
continued against Christians in Orissa from 23rd August till today
justifies the use of this Article. The violence far exceeds that of
Christians 2007, the delegation told the President, reminding her that
she had a big role to play at this juncture..

In fact, violence has spilled out of Orissa into neighbouring Madhya
Pradesh. In Orissa, It is not confined to Kandhamal but has affected
other districts. In Kandhamal, fifty thousand people are hiding in
forests or are in a few refugee camps, hiding from murderous gangs
seeking to kill them or convert them to Hinduism, Over 4,000 houses
have been completely destroyed apart from now close to a hundred small
and big churches which have been torched.

The Citizen’s delegation, the first such to meet the President, was
led by film maker Mahesh Bhatt and Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Hind President
Maulana Mahmood Madani, MP, National Integration Council member Dr
John Dayal, Orissa Archbishop Raphael Cheenath, Delhi Archbishop
Vincent Concessao, Maharashtra Government State Minorities Commission
vice chairman Dr Abraham Mathai, Jamiat leader Mohd Faruqi, Al India
Christian Council regional secretary Rev Madhu Chandra, Delhi Catholic
Archdiocese Federation President Adv Jenis Francis and Mumbai’s
Catholic Social Forum secretary general Joseph Dias were the other
members.

The President gave the delegation a patient hearing and said she would
have their demand for Article 355 examined. She said the government
had briefed her on steps, which had already been taken. Mr. Bhatt told
the President that the State government was in a coma; its police
totally complicit in the violence and the Sangh Parivar was running
havoc.
Maulana Madani said it was a matter of security of India’s minorities.
It was India’s concern for its minorities that had brought it respect
internationally, and it was the object of deep concern globally.
Archbishop Cheenath, Dr John Dayal and Dr Mathai briefed the President
in detail about the Sangh violence in the state which has continued
after the murder of the VHP vice President Lakshmanananda Saraswati.

Following are excerpts from the Memorandum
Citizen’s Memorandum to the President of India
September 1, 2008
Shrimati Pratibha Patil
The President of India
Your Excellency,
You are aware of the still continuing carnage against the Christian
community, mostly Dalits and Tribals, in the Kandhamal district of
Orissa and in several other districts including the state capital of
Bhubaneswar since 23rd August 2003 following the killing of Vishwa
Hindu Parishad leader Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati, reportedly by
Maoist groups who have been operating in the state for some time. The
violence has now spread to some other states, especially Madhya
Pradesh.
Nine months after attacks in Kandhamal District on Christians of
Dalit, Hill peoples and Tribal ethnicity celebrating the birth of
Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, we are deeply saddened by a repeat
of the violence in the month of India’s Independence. The Christmas
2007 attacks claimed the lives of at least four Christians, and we
verified the destruction of at least 105 churches and 730 Christian
homes. The current spate of violence will exceed these totals as it
continues to spread into other districts. Our estimate from Ground
Zero is of close to two dozen people dead, one a Hindu girl burnt to
death working for a Christian orphanage, a Nun has been gang raped,
religious men and women personnel humiliated, beaten, tortured, some
close to death, while policemen have looked on, or have been absent.
We appeal for the restoration of law and order. But the root cause
must also be addressed.
We, the secular civil society community, perceive that the great
nation of India is at a tipping point. The groups, which favour a
“Hindu Rashtra”, have made Orissa their laboratory, as they earlier
did Gujarat. The so-called saffronisation of the state has been the
subject of well-documented academic and socio-political studies.
We entreat you, as President of the Republic, to enforce the rule of
law upon Sangh Parivar organisations which blatantly flaunt their
divisive agenda. Specifically, we call upon you to bring the Vishwa
Hindu Parishad, Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh, and Bajrang Dal under the
rule of law.
As Orissa authorities have repeatedly said there was ample
circumstantial evidence of Maoist involvement in the killing of VHP
leader Lakshmanananda Saraswati and four others on August 23rd.
Additionally, someone who identified himself as Azad, a leader of
Maoist outfit, People's Liberation Guerrilla Army claim responsibility
for the killing as Times of India carries the news on August 30
referring to an interview with a leading Oriya daily on August 29.1
Yet Praveen Togadia, VHP general secretary, told an international
journalist on August 27, “It is clear that the church killed the
Swami.”2 Gouri Prasad Rath, Orissa state VHP secretary, said, “This
attack is the handiwork of the Christians.”3 Subhash Chavan, national
co-convener of the Bajrang Dal, said, “The police are trying to hide
the truth by blaming the Maoists.”4 An unnamed RSS spokesperson said,
“This is an attack by the agents of Christian missionaries, whose
attempts at forcible conversions the Swamiji countered.”5 RSS
spokesperson Ram Madhav told CNN IBN on Tuesday night6 that Christians
were behind the murders. Perhaps based on a media report7, Madhav The
final word lay with RSS supreme Kupahalli Sudershan who in a Press
Statement faxed to the Media called the late VHP vice President a
martyr for “stopping Christians from carrying on coversions.”
These types of irresponsible statements must be met with the full
force of the law. They are all culpable for penal action under IPC
295A for the crime of creating enmity between communities and
religions. This would benefit not only Orissa, but the nation.
We sincerely wish Swami Saraswati was not murdered and he still might
be alive if the state government had followed the recommendations of
the National Commission for Minorities. The NCM urged the authorities
to examine the speeches of Swami Lakshmanananda to determine whether
they amount to incitement to violence.8 9 We are confident that, if
this had been done, the swami would have been jailed and protected
from coming to any harm.
Your Excellency, the violence in Orissa continues without adequate
police forces to stop mobs which break curfew and harm innocent
civilians, chasing our fellow countrymen and women like animals in the
forests where they have taken refuge since August 24. Today the
irresponsible leaders of hardliner Hindu nationalist groups are
damaging our great democracy and secularism of the nation.
We request you to order the Union Government and the State
Administration to take legal action against the irresponsible
organisations which called the bundh on Monday, Aug. 25, 2008 and have
passively watched their members wreak havoc. They must, of course,
fully investigate the murder of the VHP vice President.
This is to request you to use your powers as President of India, and
the tremendous force of your good offices, to impress on the Central
Government to rush adequate Union forces, including contingents of the
Armed Forces if required, to restore law and order and governance in
the Kandhamal region.
The consequences of any further delay, we the secular civil society
fear, may be catastrophic for the small Christian community in the
State in particular, for peace in Orissa in general, and for the fair
name of India as a secular country.

Pain in Bihar, agony in Orissa

Pain in Bihar, agony in Orissa

By Vidya Bhushan Rawat

East India Company started from the Eastern Coast of India which is Bengal to do business in India but the main aim of the company was to control India and its natural resources. The company succeeded in spreading their empire all over India using all the tricks of the governance.

In the post independent India, the Eastern Sector continue to be a tough challenge for the new avatar of the company i.e. Sangh Parivar. It is an upper caste limited company where the shudras and Adivasis are kept as foot soldiers. Having won the western and northern frontier, the Parivar know it well that it would be difficult to stake a claim for the throne at Indraprastha unless the Patlipatra comes under its full control. And hence the tandava in Orissa were essential part of the entire exercise.

One wonder why people are fighting in Orissa, a state in news for all wrong reasons all the time. With enormous resources at hand, Orissa is one of the richest state of India, with similar story of poorest people in terms of economy. The rich cultivable land is in the hands of powerful companies. Therefore, right from Posco to Tatas, every one has ventured in Orissa. While the people die of hunger and starvation, it is Posco and Mittals which make news from Orissa. And chief minister Naveen Patnaik gets appreciation and acknowledgment from his supporters in the pink sitting at the India International Centres and deciding about the fate of millions of people. Yes, when the land of the poor from Orissa was being snatched there was no one except the poor themselves. When the issue of fighting against this iniquitous system came the 'god fearing' Sangh Parivar kept quiet. Perhaps that is not an issue for them. The issue for them is 'conversion'. And often repeated charges of missionaries converting the people. What is wrong with that? If the RSS and Sangh Parivar want to give a better idea, let them do the same. But how are they doing. Full state patronage in Orissa. The Sangh Parivar's goondaism has been exposed in Orissa. The multi headed monsters in the form of Bajrang Dal, VHP and others and language of Togadia who has been exiled from his own state of Gujarat, Orissa is a grim reminder of the divisive politics of the Sangh Parivar.

Of course, this is not to exonerate the Christian Missionaries who are despite all the protest take shelter under the garb of freedom of choice of religion. How would a starving and hungry person has a choice to select a religion. And why do they starve even after coming to your place. It is absolutely no control when the goons and thugs of Sangh Parivar are forcing people to reconvert to 'Hinduism'. One does not know where will these Swayamsewaks place the new converts but one thing is sure, that there caste remain unchanged. They can not be the upper caste Brahmins or Patnaiks of Orissa.

This is the most unfortunate side of Orissa when the country should have been concerned about the incident; we hear nothing of that short since Christians in India are no Muslims. For the Sangh's regular nautankis Muslims are terrorists, now they can not blame the Christians to be terrorists hence the charges of conversion. Orissa's Dalits and tribal have been pushed to each other. They have been made to fight against each other in the name of Hindu and Christian. At the end of the day it is these people who are killing each other, burning the property of each other. The religious thugs will ultimately survive but the loss of livelihood of the poor will haunt them always. That the goons of Hindutva have not cared to burn a young woman who tried to save the orphan children unmask the demonic face of the Parivar. They have no time to take care of the orphans and tribal. And those who are at least trying to do some work for them are being threatened. Naveen Patnaik will always get the best chief minister's prize from his friends in Delhi for inviting all big companies to loot Orissa and rape its natural resources. It is also important to understand that both the Dalits and tribals are made to fight each other in the name of religion. At the end of the day, a Dalit and tribal remain with in his community despite his conversion. However, my point is not to equate the Christian groups with the fundamentalist Hindu groups which have got full protection from the state police and state government. The question here is the role of state government and how come it surrendered itself to the Trishul wielding Hindutva fanatics. That Swami Lakshmananda was killed by the Maoist who have openly blamed him for spreading communal poison in the area. But the Sangh parivar refuses to buy the argument that the Hindu Maoist could kill a Hindu fanatic and hence they rioted and destroyed the houses of the Christians Dalits. It is reported that the Christian Kandh tribals were not attacked in their own village. It looks that the Hindutva gangs can not take on the Maoist head on. They know well that fighting against Maoist or the Naxal is a lost battle as even the state police are unable to do so hence the Christian become easy target for them. Here the police and administration also become their favorite choice. It also reflects a bit about Orissa's social relations where the Sangh Parivar and its wings have carefully infiltrated among the tribal and Hinduised them completely. On the other side, the Dalits seems to have been converted to Christianity. And in this football game of religious identities the end result is that both the Dalits and tribals destroying each other. What an irony that in Orissa where both the Dalits and tribals are facing assault on their livelihood they have become pawns in the hands of religious organization to champion their cause. The government must work hard to restore normalcy and rule of law. They can not absolve themselves from the duty of protecting the people. Orissa can not be allowed to become another Gujarat just because Amarnath's drama has failed to take notice of the country. Ofcourse, it has helped the communal fanatics in Kashmir Valley. All such organizations and political parties should be banned from contesting elections which raise the majoritarian communalism. I am particularly referring to Hindu communalism because the law is already punishing the others, it is these perpetrators of communal riots who have not been punished so far and need to be punished at the earliest.

Just near to Orissa is another legendary state of India named as Bihar. Today, it is passing through another anarchy, which is man made. While in Orissa, the religious goons played the tandava, in Bihar, it is river Kosi which has destroyed the livelihood of millions of people. If reports are to be believed an estimated 5 million people have been displaced in this Tsunami which has uprooted people from their places and rendered them homeless. There is not even a vacant space where people can hide themselves. In past 14 days people of Bihar have been left to fetch themselves. A state which proudly can proclaim an example of how different communities live together, Bihar is today seeking national attention. Unlike Orissa, Bihar has not seen communal disturbances in past 20 years. That Sangh Parivar and its monsters find it difficult to enter Bihar. It is to the spirit of Bihar's people that such rabid rabble rousers remain at the outskirt of politics, even when the BJP is sharing power in Bihar yet it has to change its rabid anti Muslim rhetoric's.

Apart from the communal politics, so called capital also has not reached Bihar. In India it is the cocktail of capital with religion which become the toast of the states. We have seen it happening in Gujarat followed by Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharastra. Now it has found it way in Orissa which is attracting not only investment but conversion and reconversion, but people remain hungry and starving. Bihar's people are known to work hard and migrate. It is not that they are not religious. They are religious and perhaps have focused too much on politicized version of Chhuth in Delhi and Mumbai which has become a bone of contention for the local politicians. Chhuth is fastly becoming a festival of unity of all Biharis world over very much similar to what Ganesh Chaturthy was meant for Maharastrians. Of course, so far Chhuth has not been communalized and it remains true to its roots and the commercial interest has not yet taken over it.

But a national tragedy of this quantity which the prime minister himself referred as unprecedented, has not attracted nation's attention is a matter of great anguish. Except for The Indian Express, none of the private organizations have so far taken up the cause for relief. During Tsunami and earthquake in Gujarat, Uttarakhand and Kashmir, the civil society organizations led from the front, news media, electronic channels lent their support but this time it does not look so. One does not know what are non resident Biharis doing? Is it because Bihar's over assertion of its politics has damaged its cause? Is it because Bihari politicians have failed their own people? Where are they? Well, Ram Vilas Paswan is busy with his party's meeting in Rajasthan, BJP and its hero Lal Krishna Advani does not take much interest in Bihar, Togadia and other Hindus perhaps do not think that Bihar's Dalits and backwards too are Hindus or not. Neither Dalit organizations nor human rights groups seem to think of it. The only visible face at the moment is of Laloo Yadav, whose Ministry of Railways has been pumped into service in Bihar.

Actually both Orissa and Bihar give striking similarities. Both face natural calamities. But this time both faced man made calamities, whose impact have been enormous. It will take years to rebuild the lives of those who have lost everything, as Kosi's fury is still on rampage. Orissa is burning. The chapels, the churches, the Bible, the houses of poor Dalits and tribal are explaining the enormity of this man made tragedy. That both Orissa and Bihar have some of the poorest regions yet they all have been living life of their own in these areas. These rural poor, the Dalits and Adivasis always had lived together in complete harmony of nature till one fine day the outsiders preach them and use them in their hatred and the result is destruction. This destruction of life and property in both Bihar and Orissa reminds us the madness of human being, madness of religious thugs and the madness of politicians who are ready to sacrifice people for their own political agendas. Bihar's politicians failed to see that Kosi's embankment was not repaired and still unable to respond to this catastrophe, the chief minister of Orissa has yet to visit Kandhamal and assure the Dalits, mostly Christians, that their life will be safe and that they will not become stranger in their own land just because they are not reciting Gita and Ramayana. State has to act. In the both the places it has failed. The poor Bihari is running to save his/her life from the villages as over 800 villages have been completely destroyed in 15 districts. More than 5 lakhs have been evacuated. Similarly, in Orrisa the Christians have migrated to the forest to save them from further assault from the rampaging Hindu goons. One hope that the state, civil society and other local organizations will not remain mute to such threats and work for unity among people so that all these migrants from both Bihar and Orissa, whenever they return to their roots, do not feel stranger and isolated in their own villages. If state fails in its duties then it will clearly be meant that it has succumbed to the forces of divisiveness and destruction and that would be the worst day for all of us who feel human endeavor to live a purposeful life with freedom and dignity is the essence of any successful democracy.
