"You could not have asked for better. What a tournament ... lots of excitement.
Mumbai Indians won most of their matches but nobody knew which three teams would go to the semifinals till the last game. "Thank you cricket fans of the country and abroad, you have made all these possible," he said.
Enter Sahara Pune Warriors
IPL team named amid cheer, no shadow of controversy. Finally it's been named. It's Sahara Pune Warriors and a stallion has been chosen as the logo for the team.
The unveiling of the Pune team for the next IPL season was a grand affair, with over 50,000 attending the naming ceremony at SP College Ground, belying fears that the IPL controversy will cast a shadow on the event.
The by-lanes all around the venue were completely packed with vehicles of those who turned up to witness the event.
Clearly, the Warriors will have a boisterous support for all their matches next season.
The event, hosted by Bollywood personalities Mahesh Manjrekar and Urmila Matondkar, kicked off with a cultural programme.
A speech by Surendra Bhave, one of the selectors of the Indian cricket team, followed. Bhave, a Punekar himself, shed light on the cricketing history of Pune.
Subrata Roy, chairman of Sahara Group - the company that owns the Pune team - mentioned several reasons why the city is close to his heart in his speech. It was followed by the main event - the official unveiling of the team name, which was greeted with loud cheers from the massive crowd.
And all these, despite that the entire function had been delayed by a few hours. The crowd did not seem to mind the wait as they cheered in anticipation of the Sahara Pune Warriors taking on teams like the Royals, Indians and Super Kings in
IPL 2011.
Flags bearing the team name and logo were distributed among the crowd that then took to waving them enthusiastically, creating an awesome sea of white at the ground.
Pawar: Praful Patel, NCP not involved in IPL row
In the eye of the raging Indian Premier League (IPL) storm, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Saturday rubbished the charge that the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and his ministerial colleague Praful Patel were involved in any alleged wrongdoing relating to the T20 league.
"The NCP and Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel have nothing to do with the Indian Premier League controversy," Mr. Pawar told a party convention here.
"We are clean and have nothing to do with it. We welcome the inquiry instituted by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in the IPL episode," he said.
Mr. Pawar said no inquiry was conducted against Mr. Patel in this regard though Income Tax authorities had collected some papers from his office.
"The authorities never questioned Mr. Patel in this connection. Only some papers were collected from his office in New Delhi," Mr. Pawar said, adding "we are unnecessarily being dragged into the controversy."
An e-mail was sent from the office of Mr. Patel by his daughter Poorna, IPL's hospitality manager, to the former Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Shashi Tharoor, regarding projections of evaluation of IPL franchises a couple of days before the auction of two new franchises — Pune and Kochi. — PTI
Lalit Modi to attend IPL Governing Council meeting
New Delhi: Ending the suspense over his attendance, IPL Chairman Lalit Modi today said he would be present at tomorrow's Governing Council meeting.
"I will attend and chair the meeting of the Governing Council as chairman and commissioner. I have issued the agenda to the Governing Council," Modi tweeted.
Modi's tweet has put an end to the intense speculation on whether he would attend the meeting which is expected to press for his ouster.
Modi, who has been in the eye of a storm for alleged financial irregularities, had yesterday refused to resign and had even threatened to expose some people who tried to bring the game into disrepute.
The BCCI, on its part, had tried to persuade Modi to step down voluntarily but without success. Modi's presence would mean that he would chair the meeting by virtue of being the Commissioner and Chairman.
The BCCI top brass, which has drawn up a strategy to oust him after a series of meetings in the last two days, may have to now redraw its strategy in the wake of the new development.
Assuming that Modi would not attend the meeting, the BCCI had today sent a release which stated that the Governing Council meeting would start at 10 am and the press conference would be held at 12 pm.
expected to press for his ouster.
The nationwide tax raids have allegedly unearthed financial bunglings and at the centre of the controversy is Modi, who has been accused of having silent stakes in at least three IPL franchises.
With BCCI's own image also taking a hit due to the IPL row, miffed Board bigwigs boycotted the IPL awards.
Board President Shashank Manohar, secretary N Srinivasan and IPL vice-chairman Niranjan Shah are expected to give the Twenty20 League's final at the D Y Patil Stadium this evening a miss as well due the current imbroglio.
Incidentally, Srinivasan is the MD and vice-chairman of India Cements which owns the Chennai Super Kings who will be seen in action in the summit clash against Mumbai Indians.
The trio, along with BCCI CAO Prof. Ratnakar Shetty, reached the Board's headquarters inside the Wankhede Stadium this morning presumably to finalise details about tomorrow's meeting convened at 10 am by Srinivasan at Manohar's behest.
Modi has taken a defiant stand and refused to quit the IPL chairman's post even though the dice looks heavily loaded against him at the meeting with only former BCCI chief Inderjit Singh Bindra likely to back him.
While Modi has been making his views public through twitter, the BCCI officials have been engaged in closed-door meetings, albeit informally, to work out their plan of action for tomorrow's meeting.
His support base in the BCCI might be non-exsistent but Modi has found the backing of IPL franchise owners, who feel the league's conceptualiser has become the victim of a media trial and deserves a chance to explain himself.
Modi had, in fact, requested that the meeting be deferred by five days to allow him to prepare his case but the BCCI was having none of it.
The extent to which the Modi has been marginalised can be gauged from the fact that the Champions League Twenty20, of which Modi is the chairman, held a meeting without him.
The Board's constitution empowers its Disciplinary Committee "to inquire into and deal with the matters relating to any act of indiscipline or misconduct or violation of any of the Rules and Regulations of any player, umpire, team official, administrator, selector or any other person appointed or employed by the BCCI."

Tharoor calls it an 'experience', not a 'setback'
Sun, Apr 25 04:34 AM
During his first visit to his home state after his resignation, Shashi Tharoor on Saturday chose to position his resignation as a setback for Kerala's development. Tharoor termed the IPL controversy that led to his exit as the minister of state for external affairs as a "thorn that got stuck in his foot during his run to help Kerala gain upon other states". "But that thorn is not seen as a wound, but as an experience," he said.
Referring to the PM's observation about the ups and down in politics, Tharoor said that he had had several ups in life. "Now the time for downs has come. In the past, I had overcome several trials. With the support of Congress activists, I am confident of conquering this ordeal also," he said.
Tharoor was given a rousing reception at the airport, followed by another one at the District Congress Committee office. While his supporters turned out in large numbers, not a single state-level Congress leader was present at the airport or the party office.
Keen not to land in fresh trouble, Tharoor kept away from the media through out the programmes in Thiruvananthapuram and also cancelled a scheduled meet-the-press programme. His former OSD Jacob Joseph, who had precipitated many a crisis for the ex-diplomat, was conspicuous by his absence.
"This reception is a great relief for me. My confidence stems from your brimming support. I have kept my word (to strive for the development of Kerala). I have tried only to fulfil that. I have only used my contact to fulfil the dream of an IPL team for Kerala. While toiling for Kerala and Thiruvananthapuram, 'that incident' happened. On last Monday, the first day after the resignation, I received at my home the delegates from Barcelona to push forward a development plan for the state capital, planned in association with that city," he said.
He said that the Kerala economy would benefit from the IPL. "In India and across various parts of the world, I had been advocating for the cause of Thiruvananthapuram. I had only Thiruvananthapuram and Kerala in my mind," said Tharoor. Tharoor said he was pained by the allegation that he was in the IPL to make money. "I have never faced such charges in my life. Now, at the age of 54, I do not think that a person is going to change."

The next big battle in Indian banking is here
Banker's Trust | Tamal Bandyopadhyay
The next big battle on the Indian banking turf will be fought for savings bank deposits. After freeing all loan rates, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) plans to give banks the freedom to decide on the interest rate they offer customers for money kept in savings accounts. It can happen sooner than later and dramatically change the cost structure of deposits for banks and put pressure on their net interest margins (NIMs). That, in turn, will have a bearing on their valuations.
NIM, a key parameter to judge a bank's operational efficiency, is loosely the margin between the yield on assets, or loans, and the cost of liabilities, or deposits. It will shrink when the cost of deposits goes up. Most bankers feel that if the savings bank rate is freed, there will be a rate war as banks compete fiercely with one another to mobilize savings deposits. Currently, the rate is fixed and hence there is no overt competition, although smarter banks always try to gather as much current and savings accounts (Casa) as possible to bring down their overall cost of deposits. Punjab National Bank and State Bank of India in the public sector and HDFC Bank Ltd, Axis Bank Ltd and ICICI Bank Ltd in the private sector have higher Casa than others.Current accounts are opened by companies, public enterprises and entrepreneurs who perform many transactions daily. These accounts are cheque-operated and there is no restriction on the amount of money that a customer can deposit or withdraw any number of times. Banks do not pay any interest on such accounts and get the money free but they generally impose service charges for operating a current account. The customers are meant to keep a relatively higher minimum balance in such accounts as the balance they maintain tends to be volatile because of too many transactions.
Also Read Tamal Bandyopadhyay's earlier columns
A savings account is the most common operating account for non-commercial transactions. Banks generally put a ceiling on the number of withdrawals and stipulate a certain minimum balance to be maintained in such accounts. The savings account rate is 3.5%, but until recently banks were actually paying less because they used to pay interest only on the lowest balance kept between the 10th and the end of a month. From this month, banks are required to calculate the payment of interest on the daily balance kept in a savings bank account, and this will push the cost of savings bank accounts by about 34 basis points, according to an RBI estimate. One basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point.
No wonder that in February, much before the new norm came into effect, the Indian Banks' Association (IBA), a national industry lobby, asked RBI to reduce the savings bank deposit rates to protect banks' margins. It requested the central bank to either reduce the savings bank rate or postpone the implementation of the new method of calculating the savings bank rate. The suggestion was to cut the rate to 2.5%.
With the wholesale price-based inflation at 9.9%, consumers already earn a negative interest rate on their money kept in savings bank accounts and the rate should not be reduced.
To be sure, even though the savings bank rate is 3.5%, banks spend money to issue cheque books, to send quarterly statements to customers by post as well as on customers' visits to bank branches. The cost of servicing a customer during one branch visit in a metro could be as much as Rs60, but this comes down if the customer uses automated teller machines (ATMs).
The logic behind the plan to free savings bank interest rate is not to create grounds for offering higher rates to consumers. There are, in fact, two compelling reasons to free the savings bank rate. First, an administered savings rate reduces RBI's manoeuvrability in using interest rate signals as a monetary tool. When the Indian central bank was cutting policy rates and flooding the financial system with cheap money to fight the impact of global crisis in the wake of the collapse of US investment bank Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., RBI found it difficult to bring down the policy rate below 3.5% as the administered savings rate was acting as a floor for all rates. Once the savings rate is freed, it will give more flexibility to RBI in its policy rate decisions. Second, after freeing all rates for assets (loans), the regulator cannot afford to have an administered rate for liabilities (deposits) as that will create a risk for the system in the long run as banks will face interest rate mismatches.
The Indian banking system's deposit liability is Rs45 trillion, and roughly one-fourth of this is in savings accounts. The cost of money for banks will certainly go up as they will be willing to pay more too woo depositors, particularly in big cities where private and foreign banks are aggressively vying with public sector banks for deposits and loans. In October 2005, RBI first asked IBA to chalk out a road map for deregulation of savings bank accounts, but the bankers' lobby had not shown any enthusiasm. RBI should not make any compromise on this as protecting consumer interest is more important than banks' profits. And this is why the regulator should not limit banks' freedom of fixing the savings bank rate by setting a cap of 3.5%. The rates should be totally free. That will encourage competition and creation of new liability products to benefit both the industry as well as consumers.
