Slain Dalit's family refuses govt job, aid

HISAR: After UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi's terse snub, Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda faced another embarrassment when the family of a Dalit, burnt to death along with his physically challenged daughter in caste violence in Hisar's Mirchpur village last week, refused to accept a government job and ex gratia relief. Valmiki community members also refused to return to the village.
Tara Chand's son, Pradeep, said the family refused compensation in protest against the government't failure to protect the community. "We've informed Rahul Gandhi and will ask the UPA chief to dismiss the government for its failure," he said. Family members also alleged that officials were forcing the victims's elder son to accept the job

Issues concerning the poor discussed at public meeting
BANGALORE: Globalisation and privatisation has resulted in exploitation of Dalit and women workers. People living below the poverty line (BPL) continue to suffer while the rich exploit them. These issues were discussed at a public meeting and rally organised jointly by Samata Sainik Dal and Janastra here on Sunday to mark Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Day and May Day.
Criticising the Government for not providing social and financial security to people living below the poverty line, S. Balan, general council member of AITUC, quoted a World Bank report as saying that 50 per cent of the Indian population is living below the poverty line.
"The Government is not taking any initiative to increase the salary of the workers in the construction sector. Almost all the workers employed to carry out Namma Metro work get Rs. 80 a day making it difficult for them to live," he said.
Hailing the contribution of Ambedkar to society, Samata Sainik Dal president M. Venkatswamy said: "The Government has failed to follow the basic values of the Constitution which stresses on justice, liberty, equality and fraternity."
"We should not encourage such political parties that come to power," he added.

KADAPA: Mala Mahanadu State general secretary J.V. Ramana on Sunday charged the Rosaiah government with neglecting the Scheduled Caste welfare schemes conceived by former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.
The government allocated Rs. 2.81 crore to Kadapa District SC Service Cooperative Society in 2009-10, but released only Rs. 1.71 crore and spent Rs. 1.10 crore, he alleged in a statement.
The Government ignored YSR's promise to grant loans ranging from Rs. 50 lakh to Rs 5 crore to unemployed SC youth basing on their educational qualifications, he said.
The promise to distribute land among poor SC beneficiaries on Ambedkar Jayanti was not kept up and a handful of beneficiaries was allotted land, Mr. Ramana alleged.
He warned that Mala Mahanadu would launch a movement if the district administration did not identify beneficiaries identified and did not allot land to them soon.

NAGPUR: The annual Dalit Mitra awards meant for institutions and individuals working in the field of welfare of dalits which could not be given for last three years, will be presented on May 4.
The awards will be presented at a function at Ravindra Natya Mandir, Mumbai. Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal will be chief guests at the function, State Minister for Social Welfare, Shivajirao Moghe, told PTI. "It was unfortunate that these awards were not given during the last three years and his first priority was to revive the awards", Moghe said.
The award consists of cash of Rs 15,000, a shawl and citation to individuals and Rs 25,000 to the institutions. A total of 51 awards have been instituted.

Karnal, May 2, Incensed over the failure of the government to ensure the safety of Dalits and initiate stringent action against perpetrators of atrocities in Mirchpur, the Valmiki Yuva Sabha today threatened to resort to religious conversions.
The threat was held out by Dalit leaders at a protest meeting at Karan Park here to condemn the Mirchpur incident and "continued" oppression of Dalits in Haryana.
Joginder Gogripur, chief of the Valmiki Yuva Mahasabha here said a "Bharat bandh" call for May 4 had been given by the Bhagwan Valmiki Aadi Dharam Samaj to protest against the burning down of Dalit houses in Mirchpur and the government inaction.
He said the affected families were not ready to return to the village as they feared threat to their lives. They had refused to accept financial assistance and jobs which indicated that they wanted security and a life of dignity.
Joginder critised the government for inept handling of the Mirchpur incident and demanded the resignation of Chief Minister BS Hooda on moral grounds. Alleging that there was an increase in the incidents of violence agaionst Dalits, Joginder warned that they would be left with no option but to change their religion if the government did not act. The feudal mindset was responsible for the continued injustice and atrocities on Dalits, he added.
A PTI report said shocked Mirchpur Dalits had vowed not to return to the village.
It said Devi, 45, along with her two sons, who are pursuing graduation, was camping at Hisar, along with at least 30 other Dalit families who had fled Mirchpur after their houses were torched.
The affected families were demanding rehabilitation outside Mirchpur. Devi's polio-stricken daughter Suman and her aged husband were trapped inside their burning house when about 18 dwellings were set ablaze allegedly by members of a dominant community.
The report quoted her as saying : "I have lost everything. No one can compensate my loss," said the distraught woman on the monetary relief announced by the Haryana Government to her family." Meanwhile, BSP general secretary Man Singh Manhera says the government assurance to the affected families that they will be provided adequate security has not been backed by concrete steps. "Assurances are merely on paper. On the ground, there is a fear psychosis among the Dalit families left shaken by the gruesome incident. The burnt houses tell you the entire story," he says.
Krishna Duggal, president of the Akhil Bharatiya Dhanak Samaj, says that the administration is merely providing lip service. No help is being provided to the affected families, he claims. "All 35-40 Dalit families from Mirchpur have been camping at Hisar in a temporary shelter. None has cared to come to them and listen to their problems.
"In this sizzling heat, they are surviving on the food and water being provided by the Dalit organisations and some good Samaritans," Duggal says.
On Thursday, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi made a surprise visit to Mirchpur and met the affected families.Congress President Sonia Gandhi shot off a letter to Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda telling him it was a "matter of shame" and that such incidents could not be allowed.
Hisar Deputy Commissioner OP Sheron maintains that the administration is providing all help to the victims and trying to persuade them to return to the village.
In 2005 too, dwellings of Dalits were torched in Gohana town.
