I reached Koraput on an Evening fully ILLUMINATED by Aluminium Plant and MIG factory lighting around the beautiful Hills.

My friends were there to receive me and they drove me in SONABEDA which had been a TRANSIT camp not very long ago. A Faridpur Origin Bengali family with a KHULNA district housewife hosted us as we had to relax for some hours to get the HI TECH Night Bus for Malkangiri.

We started for Malkangiri in a HI Tech Bus around 4.00 AM from koraput Bus Stand. We had just crossed a PETROL Pump as the BUS was gheraoed in a MUSLIM AREA!

It was 10th March 2009. our Muslim brothers were celebrating the Birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad SAHIB. They have decorated the area with banners.

The Bus running in speed had torn some of the banners.

The Muslim youths were quite agitated and the elders and women were standing by. But they were never VIOLENT.

They were just demanding some RESPECT and CARE.

The ORIA Crew understood the problem very well. They agreed to go slow and the Muslim youth escorted the Bus with ladders so that the Banners might be hoisted if necessary.

 
The Problem which could have turned quite COMMUNAL anywhere in India was resolved with SENSE.

It was a minor incident. But it touched my heart very deep!

But we decided aginst canscelling the DANDAKARANYA VISIT as it was MORE Important for us to bear the FAMILY LEGACY of COMMITMENT and STRUGGLE than Personal suffering. While I was in Malkangiri, the Doctors tried to convince Savita to get ADMITTED in a NURSING HOME Immediately. She refused and rang me to continue the tour.

Returning home, we had to reschedule the date of the Pending SURGERY.

MY FILM DIRECTOR Friend called Savita meanwhile and advised to consult the DOCTORS in BELUR SHRAMJIVI Hospital. We knew the doctors and the hospital.

The Hospitol is runm and managed by the WORKERS of a Locked OUT factory INDO JAPAN STEEL plant in belure since 1983. It has also opened a CARDIAC Unit where HEART SURGERY is done for only RS TWENTY FIVE thousand.

The patients have not to pay in advance and the medicines are not so costly.

The Hospital is joined and managed by some Very COMMITTED DOCTORS in Bengal.

The Intelligentsia and the Civil society support the hospital.

The Workers mobilise the resources as the HOSPITAL Refuses DUBIOUS DONATIONS.

We, me and SAVITA, have joined SHRAMJIVI fair arranged by the workers and we also shared the FAMILY GET TOGETHER.

Thus, we visited the Hospital on Tuesday and CONSULTED the DOCTOR.

AMUSINGLY, the DOCTOR advised against any Surgical Operation for the time being and insisted on medical supervision. He DIAGNOSED the ailment as DIABETIC FUNGUS INFECTION Internal which may be CURED by MEDICINES!

Because we were looking for MONEY for the EMERGENCY SURGERY, you may simply understand the RELIEF we experienced. Though, the OPERATION might be inevitable but it is not an EMERGENCY.

We may reschedule it with proper medical Supervision and Investigation! Meanwhile, we get the time to arrange the MONEY.

The HOOLIGANS, pets of the Local MEDICAL Mafia have attacked the Hospital several times!

We crossed the RIVER HUGLI on Boat and landed in RG KAR Hospital near KOLKATA RLY junction on 3 AM around where we had to see CHAMPA, the daughter of JAYANTI, our ex Domestic help. She delivered a baby recently and undergone CEASURE IN Surgery.

ENTIRE BPL population of the METRO and the adjoining districts depend on RG KAR as PATIENTS are reffed there. Even the DISTRICT Hospitals have not the Maternity Surgical UNIT in Bengal.

just FORGET other things!

The MEDICAL SERVICE is PRIVATISED. you may get any type of TREATMENT anywhere in BENGAL if you have the PURCHASING Power.

I was STUNNED to find the STRANDED suffering BPL Population consisted of more than NINETY PERCENT MUSLIMS only it included the SLUM DOGS also!

SAVITA often visit the Hospitals attending the PATIENTS in neighbourhood. She had told me that you may find NINETY PERCENT MUSLIMS depending on GOVT Hospitals only as they may not afford PRIVATE TREATMENT at any level.

Savita was TIRED as she is not well. But she went upstairs in the WARDS and even talked to the DOCTORS.

I am somewhat IMPULSIVE in such situations.

EARLIER I had QUARRELS in Hospitals as I complained of the MISMANAGEMENT often. Nothing changes, but the Patients have to suffer as the Medical STAFF dare not to touch me.

Thus, nowadays, I refrain to go inside in any GOVT. Hospital unless an EMERGENCY EMERGES.

I waited in the PREMISES with a SEA OF PEPLE sitting over all kinds of DIRT and drains.

It was SMELLING strong.

I talked to the people belonging to the METRO itself, the SUBURBANS and the DISTRICTS as far as MURSHIDABAD
 
The BPL MUSLIMs as well as the SLUM MUSLIM, most of them very poor Workers may not pronounce their names or origin as they feel so INSECURE.

As individuals they stand nowhere.

Only Religion mobilises them.

A worker from KASHIPUR, originally belonging to DHAKA and having realtions in Bhangar as his daughter was married there, was stranded with his kith in kin. His second daughter has got a baby.

He told me, `CHACHA! Idare not top Compalin. I have no face. I have my hands with which I have to earn daily bread for my family. I have the VOTE and I have to CAST the VOTE some One or the Othre! It does not change my destiny!’

The man and the family do not recognise any political party or leader.

I talked to a young Muslim housewife belonging to a PEASANT parents and married to a worker. She invited me to visit her home in BAMUNGACHHI. In her early twenties , she has two sons. Because she has studied in class NINE before she got married., she did not send her son to any MADRASA and sent him to a govt school.She was waiting for some good news as her HUSBAND`s NIECE was referred to the HOSPITOL from BARASAT DISTRICT HOSPITAL for getting a BABY.

I shared the ANXIOUS suffering movement with my people in RG KAR PREMISES and stayed there until 7 PM by the time SAVITA returned from the wards.

Meanwhile, We SHARED the GRIEF and SUFFERING, PAIN and HELPLESSNESS around.

If in SHINING INDIA, the MUSLIMS generally have no IDENTITY other than RELIGIOUS., THEY may not mobilise them either Socially or Politically, WHY do we BLAME PAKISTAN and BANGLADESH for TALIBALISATION?

In the run up to the Lok Sabha elections, Congress and the BJP are both suffering from a common ailment - losing trusted and tested allies. While Lalu Prasad's RJD has given a jolt to Congress by allocating it only three seats in Bihar, Navin Patnaik's BJD has literally dumped BJP in Orissa and has virtually joined the fledgling Third Front.

With the Lok Sabha elections being likened to a "bowlers wicket" where no side can pile up a sizable score, the allies of both the Congress and BJP are fighting to "hog the bowling" by trying to grab as much political space as they can.

Since these allies are strong regional parties, they are wanting and ensuring that in their areas of influence, it is only their writ which runs and not that of the national parties.

In the key state of Uttar Pradesh, the UPA is as good as non-existent. The Congress's attempt to stitch up an alliance with the Samajwadi Party has floundered in the state, which with 80 seats, sends the largest number of members to the Lok Sabha.


During the elections, vulnerability of politicians relatively gets enhanced as they have to go out for campaigning among masses, which compromises with their security many a time.

The government is leaving no stone unturned and has drawn up plans to deploy 40 lakh civilian officials and 21 lakh security personnel for the smooth conduct of elections.

Personnel of central police forces, state police forces, home guards and Railway Protection Force would be mobilised to guard the more than 8.28 lakh polling stations spread throughout the country.

On the defensive over his anti-Muslim statements, BJP on Wednesday "dissociated" itself from and "disapproved" Varun Gandhi's allegedly
communal remarks in Pilibhit which have created a political storm.

"BJP disassociates from and disapproves of the statements attributed to him. He (Varun) has himself raised questions over the statements attributed to him and the Election Commission will deal with that," party spokesman Ravi Shanker Prasad told reporters on Wednesday.

"We have not received any notice from the Election Commission on the issue," he said.

Anti-terror Court judge Sakhi Mohammad Kahut remanded Lashker-e-Taiba operatives Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, Zarar Shah and Abu al-Qama to the custody of the Federal Investigation Agency for two more days during a hearing held in the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi yesterday. The judge remanded LeT activist Hamad Amin Sadiq, described by Pakistani officials as the "main operator" behind the Mumbai attacks, to judicial custody for 14 days. He will be held at Adiala Jail.

On the other hand,Undeterred by the widespread criticism following its attack on a Mangalore pub, right wing group Sri Ram Sene has now set its sight on Goa, vowing to agitate against pub culture in that state. Challenging Goa Home Minister Ravi Naik, who had declared that the group would not be allowed to set up its unit, Sene chief Pramod Muthalik on Wednesday said he along with his volunteers would enter the coastal state to protest the pub culture existing in Goa. Sene activists had barged into a pub at Mangalore on January 24 and attacked women and others in an act of moral policing against pub culture, triggering protests from women bodies including some which launched 'pink chaddi' campaign.

Muthalik also questioned the Mangalore district administration's decision to ban his entry, alleging that "those involved in murdering Hindu leaders and workers were moving freely with no action being taken against them".


Holding that his anti-Muslim speeches amount to violation of the Model Code of Conduct, the Election Commission on Wednesday slapped notices on Varun Gandhi and BJP seeking their response by Friday, even as it ordered video tracking of his entire campaign.

"The Commission is of the opinion that the above action on your part amounts to violation of the provisions of the Model Code of Conduct," the EC said in its notice, referring to the speeches made by Gandhi in Mohalla Dalchand, Kotwali Pilibhit and Kasba Barkheda in Uttar Pradesh on March 7 and 8.

"Therefore, you are called upon to explain by 11 hours on March 20 as to why action should not be taken against you," the EC said, a day after filing a criminal case against Gandhi for his inflammatory utterances.

In its notice to BJP President, the EC said that it was of the opinion that the action of Gandhi as a member of BJP amounted to violation of Model Code of Conduct and asked it to reply by Friday as to why the party disregarded and violated the provisions of the Code.

The Commission said it has received a report of the District Election Officer, Pilibhit, yesterday stating that "you (Gandhi) have violated the Model Code of Conduct by inciting communal feeling through your speeches". A copy of the CD was sent to both Gandhi and the party.

The SP has declared candidates for 76 seats in the state, while the Congress has announced candidates for 24 seats so far. Congress leader Digvijay Singh indicated yesterday that there was little scope for any adjustment now.

The NDA is comparatively in a better situation in the Mayawati ruled state as the BJP has worked out an alliance with Ajit Singh's RLD although the saffron party's position has weakened considerably over a period of time with the Ayodhya issue gradually taking a backseat.

In Bihar, the Congress is licking its wounds inflicted by its allies and has threatened to contest as many seats as possible.

However, NDA is better placed in the Nitish Kumar-led state with JDU and BJP agreeing to fight 25 and 15 seats respectively. BJP, however, had to eat humble pie as it was forced to concede a seat to its alliance partner from the previously contested 16 seats.

What has come as a major setback to the NDA is Orissa where the Navin Patnaik led BJD, one of its oldest allies, walked out of the alliance on the eve of the polls, forcing the BJP to go it alone there.

Only neighbouring West Bengal provides a silver lining to the UPA as Congress has been able to thrash out a seat sharing formula with the Mamta Banerjee led Trinamool Congress.

However, Congress was forced to become a junior partner in the alliance with only 14 of the 42 seats being given to it in the pact.

Maharashtra, a state which sends 48 members to the Lok Sabha, the UPA allies are making claims and counter claims. While the Shiv Sena partners the BJP here and has announced an understanding after much haggling, Congress is in alliance with the Sharad Pawar-led NCP. An amicable formula is yet to be worked out in the UPA with NCP eying more seats than it contested last time.

In the southern states, the UPA alliance in Tamil Nadu is facing hiccups after MDMK crossed over to AIADMK and PMK is giving mixed signals.

Interestingly, BJP is 'friendless' in southern India, including in this state.

In Karnataka, Congress was hoping for some understanding with the JD(S). After the Deve Gowda-led party joined the Third Front, the hopes have not borne fruit so far.

Congress is keeping its fingers crossed in Jharkhand where a multi-party alliance is facing inner contradictions and demands of more seats by the alliance partners.

In the border state of Jammu and Kashmir, Congress will fight jointly with the National Conference with both parties contesting 3 seats each.

'Musharraf agreed to shift stand on Kashmir for army's credibility'

WASHINGTON: Former President General Pervez Musharraf was ready to give up Islamabad's traditional stand on Kashmir during secret talks with India
in 2006 in order to regain credibility to Pakistan army post 9/11, a US analyst has said.
After September 11, the Pakistani army had lost its credibility in the international community mainly because of its well-established relationship with the extremists groups, said Steve Coll, a Pultizer prize-winning American journalist, who has written several investigative stories on Kashmir.
"The (Pak) army took the extraordinary steps that it did to enter into these negotiations over Kashmir, essentially threatening to reverse decades of policy in this negotiation with India, it was not coercion that brought them to the table; it was aspiration," he said in his testimony before the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom.
"They wanted, Musharraf in particular, the international legitimacy, the credibility. He wanted to be celebrated at international events as a peacemaker. He wanted Oslo to pay attention to him," Coll said in response to a question.
The only way to achieve stability in South Asia, he observed, is through normalisation between India and Pakistan. And "that's why the Kashmir negotiations matter, not in and of themselves but as a pathway to normalization," he argued.

New Delhi Under fire from BJP and others for his reported anti-Muslim speeches, an unapologetic Varun Gandhi on Wednesday asserted he was proud of being a Hindu and an Indian and claimed he had not made any communal statement.
Giving no signs of tendering an apology sought by his party, Varun, the 29-year-old BJP Lok Sabha candidate from Pilibhit, said the video footage of his speeches was ‘doctored’ and saw a ‘political conspiracy’ hatched to malign him.
"I am proud of my faith and not apologetic about it. I am a Gandhi, a Hindu and an Indian in the equal measure," he said.
Acting swiftly, the Election Commission had on Tuesday ordered filing of a criminal case against Varun for his alleged inflammatory speech with communal overtones and served notice to the party seeking its explanation.
"I have been a victim of a political conspiracy. Those are not my words and that is not my voice. I have not made any communal statement," Varun, a scion of the estranged Gandhi family, said.
Varun, son of Maneka Gandhi, said the tape has been doctored and it was a ‘malicious attempt’ to brand him communal.
Senior BJP leader Shanawaz Hussain termed Varun's remarks ‘shocking’ and demanded an unconditional apology from him.
Another BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi also assailed Varun's remarks saying they are a manifestation of his family's past Congress culture.
Rattled by the controversy, the BJP asked its party candidates to observe caution and restraint in their speeches.
"We do not subscribe to such views," party spokesperson Siddarth Nath Singh said.
In no mood to relent, Varun said, "I am pro India and not anti-anybody. I want to ask the nation to stand by me."
He went on to add ‘my attempt has been to restore confidence in a community that has been under siege in its own country.’
He said the video footage has been ‘doctored’. It has been a malicious attempt to brand me as communal. There is no question of my having any ill feeling towards any community," he said.
At a recent election meeting in Pilibhit from where he is making his electoral debut, Varun had reportedly said, "this is not a 'Hand' (Congress symbol), it is the power of the 'Lotus' (BJP symbol). It will cut the head of ....... Jai Shri Ram."
He had also said if anyone raises a hand against Hindus and if they thought Hindus were weak and leaderless, he would cut his hand. Gandhi, however, claimed that the video footage of his speeches was tampered with.
Varun also wondered why the CD was made public after a gap of 12 days on March 16 whereas he made the speech on March 5.
In Patna, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar termed Varun's Pilibhit speech as condemnable.
"I have not seen the TV footage (of Varun's speech), but from what I have come to know, his statement hurt the sensibilities of a section of the society. Anything that is said during an election or otherwise that hurts the sentiments of any community is condemnable," Kumar said when his comments was sought on the matter.
Terming BJP Varun's speech as contrary to secular democracy, Congress said BJP will be seen as a co-conspirator if it does not take action against him.
Union Minister Kapil Sibal said when cognisance has been taken by the Election Commission that a prima facie offence has been committed, whether Varun denies it or not is not relevant.
"The leadership of BJP will take action because if they don't, then it will be seen that they are the co-conspirators in this," he said in Delhi.
Alleging the speech was aimed at polarising votes, Sibal said, "I am not concerned with the nature and quality of the speech. It is abhorrent; it is contrary to the basic foundations of our secular democracy".

At this point, the unsought advice being offered to President Barack Obama may have exceeded his staff's capacity to screen it. Daily briefings about national security and the tumbling economy trump op-ed pieces and hefty tomes about the state of the world.
Let's hope David E. Sanger's new book, "The Inheritance: The World Obama Confronts and the Challenges to American Power" gets through the never-ending media chatter, though.
Yes, it's a hefty tome about the state of the world (or at least the parts deemed most threatening to the U.S.).
But Sanger, the chief Washington correspondent for The New York Times, offers a thorough assessment of the dangers the new administration inherited from former President George W. Bush. And Sanger's suggestions for how the Obama administration should address them are well reasoned and compelling.
As a bonus, Democrats reading along at home will find Sanger's harsh assessment of Bush's foreign policy especially gratifying.
"The Inheritance" is largely an account of the opportunities the Bush administration squandered and the risks it ignored, in part because the war in Iraq distracted the White House from legitimate dangers.
With its focus set on Iraq (Enemy No. 1 in Bush's "axis of evil"), Sanger writes, the Bush team let Iran (Enemy No. 2), Afghanistan, Pakistan and North Korea (Enemy No. 3) edge closer to positions that pose far greater threats to the U.S. than Saddam Hussein's regime ever did.
On Bush's watch, Sanger argues, Iran moved closer to having nuclear weapons, and the administration squandered an opportunity to open negotiations with Iran after the U.S. defeated Iraq, one of Iran's closest enemies.
The consequences could be dire. "If we stay on the current path, Iran is getting the Bomb," Sanger writes.
Likewise, the war in Iraq drew the White House's attention away from Afghanistan, which may still be harboring Osama bin Laden and others who planned the Sept. 11 attacks.
"Early successes had made it easier to ignore the deepening challenges as the conflict wore on," Sanger writes. "As resources shifted west, toward Baghdad, plans for a robust reconstruction program evaporated. The initial appearance of an easy victory was masked by the fact that the Taliban had never been defeated, but simply had moved across the border into the safety of the tribal areas in Pakistan."
Bush's reliance on Pakistan (which had previously faced sanctions for its nuclear ambitions) to fight the Taliban in the tribal areas proved even more catastrophic, writes Sanger, who declares it "one of the biggest misjudgments of the war on terror."
"Historians may argue for years whether a fuller commitment to Afghanistan could have prevented that safe haven from being formed across the Pakistan border," Sanger writes. "But many Americans with long experience in the region believe that President Bush's insistence that Iraq was the 'central front' in the war on terror was more than wrong -- it raised the cost of solving the problem later."
Given Pakistan's political instability, solving the problem certainly won't get easier. As one of the members of the U.S. joint chiefs told Sanger after a terrorist attack on the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad in September, "We have to stabilize Iraq, because if we don't, there's no hope of creating a model for the Middle East. But what's going on in Pakistan is, to my mind, going to be the number-one crisis for the next president -- Bush's truly unfinished business."
North Korea didn't sit idly during the White House's preoccupation with the war in Iraq, either. Indeed, it gathered the material for six to eight nuclear weapons as American troops invaded Iraq, knowing that the U.S. would be too distracted to respond. The result: "North Korea became the nuclear renegade that got away," Sanger writes.
Toss in China's growing economic and military powers and a few of other dangers Sanger covers (among them, bioterrorism) and readers understand why "the clock is ticking faster for [Obama] than it did for his predecessor," as Sanger writes.
A flood of new books about the presidencies of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln offer analogies for how Obama could -- and perhaps should -- act, with great presidents as examples.
"The Inheritance" is more pressing. It doesn't offer analogous situations by which to understand the world. These are the situations we face as a nation, and Sanger's book merits close reading, inside the White House and out.

Little Nano carries a big burden for Tata

Sanand What a difference a year makes. In early 2008, Tata Motors unveiled its Nano to a rapturous media reception as the snub-nosed, 4-seater with a 1,00,000-rupee ($1,945) price tag created a new category of super-cheap cars for the masses.
Just weeks later, Tata Motors acquired the Jaguar and Land Rover brands for $2.3 billion from Ford Motor Co in a blaze of glory, and the company revelled in the global spotlight.
But Tata, India's top vehicle maker, next week rolls out the Nano six months behind schedule, amid worries that an economic downturn and production constraints may spoil the success of the world's cheapest car.
Since the Nano was first shown, the main production plant had to be moved following land protests, Tata Motors posted a first loss in seven years as sales slumped, and its shares have dropped 75 per cent. On top of that, Tata Motors' credit rating was downgraded as its debt-fuelled expansion binge left it exposed to the financial crisis.
"In the last 12 months, Tata has been hit by a perfect storm," said Ashvin Chotai, managing director at consultancy Intelligence Automotive Asia in London.
"At the time, it was unimaginable that the venerable Tata would have difficulty tapping credit markets. But its resources became stretched from venturing out on so many fronts, and the slump in sales and tighter credit worsened the situation."
A bridge loan of $2 billion is due in June, with Standard & Poors warning of another ratings downgrade because of the "extremely adverse" operating environment for Jaguar/Land Rover, Tata's ambitious capex plans and deteriorating cash flow.
The high fuel and commodity costs that made the Nano imperative a year ago have faded somewhat, but its place in the history books is still secure, with a popular following that could rival the Beetle, Mini and Fiat 500, analysts say.
"The Nano will still create a new segment, bridging the gap between motorbikes and entry-level cars, and it will still be the first of its kind," said Mohit Arora, a director at JD Power Asia-Pacific in Singapore. "Those fundamentals haven't changed."

The Nano goes on sale in April, the start of the new fiscal year. Only about 50,000 cars will be available in the first year from Tata's facilities in Pune and Pantnagar, analysts say, until the 250,000-unit capacity in Gujarat comes onstream.
The delays added to the $350 million Tata had already invested in the project, and also meant the company, best known for its buses and trucks, has squandered some of its first-mover advantage in what looks to be a fiercely competitive segment.
"Tata has lost some momentum because of the delays, and competition may have put it to use," said Deepesh Rathore, managing director, India of UK-based consultancy Global Insight.
"But, on the positive side, interest rates on vehicle loans have come down a bit and material costs have also come down, so that's two things they don't have to worry about."
Oil is below $45 a barrel, after having topped $100 at the time of Nano's unveiling, while steel prices have more than halved since mid-2008. Combined with lower interest rates, vehicle sales in India had their best month in four months in February.
But consumer sentiment remains muted.
Tata has tied up with several state-run banks for easy terms, including loans of up to 85 per cent of the price, but even that may not bolster sentiment, said Pradeep Saxena, senior vice president at TNS Automotive.
"Consumers are postponing purchases, and this segment of first-time buyers is very sensitive to finance terms," he said.
Analysts say Tata will most likely raise the price soon, particularly on deluxe models, but the slim margins, the initial capacity constraints and the depressed market sentiment mean that breakeven on the Nano project will take 5-6 years.
Meanwhile, the venture of Renault/Nissan Motor with Bajaj said their $2,500 car is on track to launch in 2011, while Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor, the No.1 and No.2 carmakers in India, are unlikely to cede ground to the Nano without a fight.
Volkswagen, Toyota Motor, Honda and Fiat have also said they were keen to build low-cost cars, although the slowdown may temper their investment plans.
The slowdown makes it harder for Tata to boost commercial vehicle sales, its mainstay, and to refinance the $2 billion bridge loan. But the gloomy economic scenario may also suit Tata Motors to some degree.
"Given how everyone's talking about being frugal, it may be considered cool to be seen in a Nano," said Hormazd Sorabjee, editor of Autocar magazine.
Thousands of supporters on Facebook clearly think so, with groups that want the car in Denmark, Chile, South Africa, Argentina, Italy, France and the United States. The website (www.tatanano.com) has received more than 40 million hits.
"I heard there's a big rush for applications for the car. I just hope we can get one. I've waited for so long," said Shweta Kumari, who wants a car so she doesn't have to share one.

Introduction: The Briefing
The motorcade pulled up to the side of the gleaming new FBI building on Chicago’s west side at midmorning on the first Tuesday in September, just as the 2008 presidential campaign was shifting into its final, most brutal phase. There was a brief pause as Secret Service agents made one last check of the surroundings and radioed backed to their headquarters that the man they had codenamed “Renegade’’ had arrived. Barack Obama emerged silently, a few foreign policy advisers in tow, and quickly took a waiting elevator to the tenth floor. The candidate strode past the long corridor lined with identically framed portraits of the special agents-in-charge who have run the FBI’s operations there since the era when bank robbers such as John Dillinger were still considered Public Enemy Number 1. Obama and his team were headed for the FBI’s secure conference room—a “bubble” that deflects any electronic intercepts—for one of the quietest rituals of the quadrennial presidential campaign season: a ninety-minute, classified briefing about the world that the winner of the 2008 presidential election will confront.
Waiting for him in the windowless room was a man who, unlike Obama, had been able to walk into the FBI building almost completely unnoticed. At sixty-five, J. Michael McConnell, the director of national intelligence, was pale, a bit stooped because of a bad back, and wearing wire-rim glasses that made him look like a well-heeled consultant—the job he held until President Bush convinced him to return to government at the lowest point of Bush’s presidency, as Iraq was dissolving into chaos in the fall of 2006….

The spy chief [had] commissioned a stack of digestible reports for Obama and his rival, Senator John McCain, as a sort of field guide to American vulnerabilities at the end of the Bush era. “We came up with thirteen topics,” McConnell said. He would not reveal the subject matter of the reports, but acknowledged, “if you made a list, you’d probably get eleven or twelve of the thirteen.”
Among the reports was a grim assessment that Al Qaeda—the terror group whose middle ranks Bush used to claim were being decimated—had not only reconstituted but had more allies and associates than ever along the forbidding border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. There was a description of how the Taliban were making huge inroads into Afghanistan and how other militants saw an opportunity over the next two years to attempt the first violent overthrow of a nuclear-armed state: Pakistan. The country was ripe for the picking: Its weak, corrupt government faced national bankruptcy, an insurgency was at the doorstep of the capital, and the Pakistani government had no comprehensive strategy to confront either threat. Nor did it seem to want one. McConnell himself had come to the conclusion months before that Pakistan’s aid to the Taliban was no act of rogue Pakistani intelligence agents, but instead was government policy. Nonetheless, Washington kept paying billions in “reimbursements’’ for counterterrorism operations to the Pakistani military.
Another report summarized the huge strides Iran had made in its nuclear program made while America was focused on its elections: By Inauguration Day, Iran was estimated to have amassed enough partially enriched uranium to manufacture a single bomb—if the Iranians could find a covert way to finish the enrichment process. The report’s timeline made it clear that in his first term, the new president will have to decide whether to live with a nuclear Iran or attempt—by diplomacy, stealth, or force—to disarm it.
There was a study of the economic and military implications of China’s rise, and another detailed Russia’s angry mix of nationalism and its perpetual sense of victimization—a dangerous brew on display just weeks before, during Russia’s invasion of parts of Georgia. Yet another report focused on a recent analysis of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal, which had expanded dramatically on Bush’s watch. There was even a report on the national security implications of global climate change—not the usual fare for the intelligence community.
For ninety minutes Obama listened, sometimes tipping back his chair as he sat at the long, beechwood-toned conference table. His aides were largely silent as they looked around the room that was decorated in government-issue flags at one end and screens for secure video links at the other.

It's hard to believe that desktop computers have only been around for 25 years or so, and the World Wide Web for even less time than that. But just
as the personal computer (PC) changed the way we organised and accessed information, the cellphone is transforming the ways in which we can find and use information. In the last decade, mobile phones have become more than just instruments to make and receive telephone calls. A new breed of mobiles, called smartphones, have features that were once the exclusive domain of PCs, such as spreadsheets, e-mail, word processing and Web browsing. These smartphones carry our personal information and provide access to the internet, while increasingly being used to navigate the real world.
Even in these tough economic times, smartphones have continued to sell. A recently released study indicates that about 23 per cent of all handset sales in the US during the fourth quarter of 2008 were of smartphones. This figure is only expected to rise. As the computing power of these phones increases, the sort of tasks they will be able to perform will also become more complex. Already, smartphones are an amalgam of various other devices they are phones, media players, cameras and even navigation systems.
New software applications have made it possible for such phones to act as GPS devices. Not only can users view maps on their phones to figure out where they are, or to find a restaurant or the nearest petrol station, new software lets people locate other people. This has privacy implications, sure, but it also has the potential to change the way people think about space. Location-aware phones will let consumers 'look' behind buildings and around the corners to find little shops and cafes they might have otherwise overlooked.
There are four billion cellphones in use around the world. India has 280 million of them. The mobile phone market in this country continues to grow in defiance of global trends. Not all of these phones are smartphones indeed, most are not. But as time passes, the technology will get cheaper. For instance, colour screens in mobiles was high technology just a few years ago, but is now a standard feature, while more and more phones ship with cameras. Future generations of smartphones could become the Swiss army knives of portable electronics. They'll be able to handle everything from our communication to our entertainment needs. And, just about everyone will have one.

Pak court extends police remand of 26/11 suspects
Islamabad A Pakistani anti-terrorism court has extended by two days the police remand of three accused in a case related to the Mumbai attacks and remanded another suspect to judicial custody for a fortnight.
Anti-terror Court judge Sakhi Mohammad Kahut remanded Lashker-e-Taiba operatives Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, Zarar Shah and Abu al-Qama to the custody of the Federal Investigation Agency for two more days during a hearing held in the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.
The judge remanded LeT activist Hamad Amin Sadiq, described by Pakistani officials as the "main operator" behind the Mumbai attacks, to judicial custody for 14 days. He will be held at Adiala Jail.
The court directed the FIA's Special Investigation Cell to produce Lakhvi, Shah and al Qama before it again on March 19. It also directed that Sadiq should be produced again on March 30.
The SIC requested an extension of the police remand for Lakhvi, Shah and al Qama because it wanted to question them further following the receipt of the India's response to Pakistan's 30 questions seeking further information on the Mumbai attacks. In light of this information, the SIC will arrange for the accused to watch some CDs provided by India and then interrogate them. Lakhvi, Shah and al Qama are the main suspects in the case, SIC officials told the judge.
The court accepted the SIC's request and extended the police remand of the three suspects.
The FIA registered a case on February 12 against nine suspects, including Lakhvi, Shah, al Qama, Sadiq, a suspect identified only as Khan, Javed Iqbal, Muhammad Ashfaq, Muhammad Riaz and Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone terrorist captured by Indian authorities, for their involvement in the Mumbai attacks.

A mixed bag; very nuclear arms-centric, February 19, 2009

First the good - The book covers Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan very well. Sanger provides us with details that have been either under-reported by the mainstream press or have not been reported at all. The author has clearly invested a tremendous amount of effort in cobbling together these sections of the book. The chapters on China are not so well done. At first Sanger channels Thomas Friedman to write a pean to China's globalization. He then fails to provide the same level of insight as he does for the other three countries mentioned above.
The faults - Sanger fails to take into account the developments in several nations of Africa and South America, Russia and Mexico. For example, the re-emergence of tinpot dictators in South America, the crushing of enterprise and economic growth of the populace, and the diminishing role of several South American nations in world affairs will lead to crises in only a few years. Surely, this will have a huge impact on the U.S. and Mr. Obama will need to address it. Not a word about this entire region.
The book also needs an editor to chop off at least a third that is redundant. The problem is that there is no coherent chronological development of the analysis. The constant flitting around in terms of chronology fails to provide a cogent picture of the situation as it developed and also makes for cris-crossing the same path time and again. Finally, there are several spelling mistakes and grammatical errors that should have been fixed prior to release of the book.
It doesn't get into the Iraq war, how we got in and how we are attempting to get out. The focus instead is on opportunity cost. The real price of the war in Iraq is more profound than the $800 billion spent or even the sad human cost in deaths and casualties. The true price tag includes what we should have been doing instead. As author David Sanger puts it, when "the `decider' became the ditherer," the country became distracted from more immediate problems in Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and North Korea. The winner after eight years of Bush's leadership? China.
The problems were not all Bush's fault, of course. But the way he and his administration responded weakened our country. "At the moment when we most needed to act like a truly enlightened superpower, we let fear trump judgment, we depleted our political capital and moral authority, and we sullied our reputation as the world's safest, best-regulated place to invest. The scorecard at the end of eight years is unforgiving: Barack Obama now inherits a country in far more peril -- both strategically and economically -- than Bush did when he took office."
The Inheritance is full of behind-the-scenes vignettes and insights. The author met with Bush in Crawford, Texas, eight days before the newly-elected president would be sworn in. Bush was joshing and informal, but as they entered the house, he warned, "Wipe your feet well, boys. I may have just been elected President of the United States, but Laura will have my *** if there's mud in her living room." Later, talking about his newly named press secretary, Ari Fleischer, Bush confessed "There's a lot I won't be telling him. There's a lot you won't hear." As Sanger puts it, "He got that right."
The epilogue, titled Obama's Challenge, begins with this quote: "Great crises create the opportunity to forge great presidencies." Here's hoping.

Sanger describes what President-Elect Obama will face - results of the costs of distraction and lost opportunities in Iraq. He does not cover our weakened position due to the 2008 market collapse. His best material involves the latest developments in Iran.

The 2007 NIE report on Iran reported that they had ceased working on a bomb in 2003, but omitted the fact that this is the easiest portion - far easier than creating the required enriched fissionable material, especially given the availability of Russian experts and Pakistani help. The classified version also alleged Iran had added covert enrichment sites to the main (known) one. After crying wolf re Iraq, U.S. intelligence was unable to raise the alarm about Iran. The "good news" is that the U.S. tunneled into Irani computer systems and obtained extensive background information.

President Bush then decided to try sabotaging Iran's efforts - eg. arranging power supplies that generated unstable electricity that destroyed centrifuges (about 50) when turned on. The "bad news" is that Iran is now estimated to have 4,000 active centrifuges - enough to build a bomb/year, and is building new centrifuges that are even better. Experts see Iran as having enough material for a few weapons by 2010-12, and being set back only two years by a bombing campaign that would create enormous new problems in Iraq and elsewhere.

During the Spring 2008, Israel requested precision bunker-busting bombs and Iraq overflight rights to do the job themselves. President Bush refused.

The U.S. started Iran down the nuclear path in the 1950s; fortunately, Khomeini ignored it when the Shah was deposed. However, Saddam's use of chemical weapons on Iran rekindled interest. The U.S. had an opportunity to obtain Iran's cooperation post 9/11, especially at the time of "Mission Accomplished." Cheney, however, believed the Iranians were on the verge of collapse and successfully argued for ignoring their proposal.

Sanger now sees the U.S. at another point of strength in negotiating vs. Iran - their economy is at a nadir with the recent drop in oil prices.

Meanwhile, our intelligence chiefs have made repeated secret trips to Pakistan to try and stem a growing insurgency and cope with an ally aiding the enemy. "The Inheritance" also takes readers to Afghanistan, where Bush II never delivered on his promises to rebuild, paving the way for the Taliban's return. General McNeil (2008) tells Sanger that managing troops from 26 nations (mostly NATO), most of whom are under instructions to avoid regions where casualties were likely, and often also required advance approval from their capitals, is not a good way to win a war.

The Afghan government revenue in 2008 was $716 million, vs. a $4 billion narco-trade (per CIA). (Couldn't the NATO troops at least be used to clear the poppy fields?) Bush promised a "Marshal Plan" for Afghanistan ($90 billion in today's dollars), but months after that speech the U.S. had pledged only $290 million (half that from Iran, and only a small portion of the $5 billion total).

Another problem is Pakistan and its history of supporting the Taliban (valued by the Pakistani military and ISI for keeping India out of Afghanistan). Sanger says they have neither the will nor the means to take on al Qaeda and the Taliban. Worse yet, it has 70,000 nuclear workers, including about 2,000 "hard core" scientists and engineers. Our NIE review of the region concluded that Pakistan, with its economy near collapse, is the real prize for al Qaeda.

Then Sanger covers North Korea where actual WMD were built while the U.S. pursued phantoms in Iraq, and the technology then sold to Syria - unknown to the U.S. Sanger also then tells how China used the Bush years to expand influence in Asia and lock up oil supplies in Africa.

Sanger ends with three scenarios that depict terrorism vulnerabilities. The first (nuclear) involves a crude, very-low power nuclear device set off in D.C., and costing $500,000. The parts could either be smuggled into the U.S. in pieces or assembled - the U.S. detectors are outdated and probably couldn't detect it (despite creating 400-600 false alarms/day at Long Beach). New technology would reduce the false alarms, but probably still couldn't detect a nuclear weapon, per Sanger.

The second vulnerability is vs. biological weapons - major cities have detectors, but reading the results takes at least a day. Estimated cost: $500 million.

The third vulnerability involves a cyber attack - requiring about three years and another $500 million, and capable of destroying expensive diesel generators, electricity transmission lines, neutralizing our defenses, etc.
