Dada Saheb Phalke Award 2007 to Shri Manna Dey

 

New Delhi : September 30, 2009

 

Eminent singer Shri Manna Dey has been selected for the Dada Saheb Phalke Award for the year 2007. The Award is given by the Government of India for outstanding contribution in the field of cinema. The Award carries a Cash Prize of Rs. 10 lakh, a Swaran Kamal and a Shawl.

 

Shri Manna Dey has dominated the Indian film playback music from the 1950s. He has recorded more than 3500 songs during his six decade long career. Shri Manna Dey has won numerous awards and accolades in his singing and music career. Among others, he has won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the Hindi Film "Mere Huzur" and the Bengali film "Nishi Padma". He has also been honoured with the Padmashree and Padma Bhushan.

 

Manna Dey started his career in playback singing with the movie Tamanna in 1943. The song was an instant hit. There has been no looking back since. Trained in classical traditions, his mellifluous voice has enthralled millions of households all over the country. His hallmark has been his versatility – he has been as adept in rendering complex classical based numbers, qawallis and ghazals as he has been in rendering buoyant romantic songs, soft pathos laden ones as also light fun laced numbers and Bhajans. Some of his famous songs include "Laga Chuneri mein daag", "Pyaar hua iqraar hua", "Ye raat bheegi bheegi", "Kasme wade pyaar wafa ", etc. Some of the most well known films for which he has lent his voice are: Awaara, Do Bigha Zamin, Mera Naam Joker, Bobby, Zanjeer, Padosan and Sholay. Dey (real name Prabodh Chandra Dey) was born to Purna Chandra (father) and Mahamaya Devi (mother) on 1st May 1919.

 

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is an annual award given by the Government of India for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema. It was instituted in 1969 , the birth centenary year of Dadasaheb Phalke , considered the father of Indian cinema. The award for a particular year is given along with the National Film Awards. Shri Manna Dey is the 55th awardee of the Dada Saheb Phalke Award. The Hon'ble President would be conferring the award on 21st October 2009. The Committee consisting of eminent personalities Dr. A.Nageshwara Rao, Yash Chopra, Smt. Vijaya Mulay and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan made the recommendations to the Government.

Rs. 10 crore released for Dairy Venture Capital Fund

The Government has released Rs. 10 crore to NABARD as first instalment for the Dairy Venture Capital Fund, DVCF for the current year. The DVCF Scheme aims at generating self-employment and creating infrastructure mainly in the unorganised sector for making improvement in quality resulting in food safety and to help in bringing a significant portion of unorganised sector under the ambit of organised sector.

 

The components of the Scheme are: establishment of small dairy farms, purchase of milking machines/milkotester/bulk milk cooling unit etc., purchase of dairy processing equipment, establishment of dairy product, transportation facilities, including cold chain, cold storage facilities for milk and milk products and setting up of private veterinary clinics.

 

Financial assistance is provided as loan to rural/urban beneficiaries under a schematic proposal through bankable projects. The Scheme is being implemented through NABARD and the funds released by the centre are kept as revolving fund for further release of interest free loan of 50 per cent to the beneficiary through lead banks. Entrepreneur's contribution is 10% and the remaining fund is sanctioned by the concerned lead bank as loan.

 

Rs. 122.99 crore has so far been released to NABARD for venture capital funding since 2004-05. Maharashtra, Assam Rajasthan, Karnataka, Tripura and Uttarakhand have benefitted most from the scheme.

467 Projects approved and 40 projects completed under JNNURM

            Ministry of Urban Development has approved  467 projects with  total cost of  Rs.50,340 crores under Urban Infrastructure Governance (UIG), Sub-Mission –I of  Jawaharlal Nehru National  Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) so far. Additional Central Assistance (ACA) of Rs.8933 crores  have been released against the Central share of Rs.23,856 crores committed (76% of 7-year allocation for 2005-12).  All States /Union Territories  except Goa & all mission cities except Panaji, Jamshedpur, Tirupathi, Porbander have been covered under UIG.

            Under the mission, 81% of the total cost of projects accounted for by the priority sectors of water supply, sewerage, storm water drainage and solid waste management aiming at integrated development of infrastructural services in the cities covered under the mission . 40 projects reported by states have been  physically completed so far. Financial support for setting up of Programme Management Units (PMUs) in 19 States/UTs has been approved. Ministry has also approved financial Support for setting up of 43 Project Implementation Units (PIUs) at the Cities/ULBs levels to monitor UIG schemes. A framework for Independent Reviewing and Monitoring Authority (IRMA) established and IRMA proposals for 13 States/UTs have been approved.

            Under the Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and medium Towns (UIDSSMT), 752 projects with total cost of Rs.12,820 crores have been approved by the Ministry. The Scheme aims at improvement of Urban Infrastructure in towns and cities (other than the 65 Mission cities indentified under JNNURM)  in a planned manner. The Scheme covers all cities/towns as per 2001 census, except the mission cities covered under JNNURM.  Ministry has released ACA of Rs.5858 crores against the Central share of Rs.10,336 crores committed  (91% of 7-year allocation for 2005-12). 29 States/UTs &  635 towns have been covered under UIDSSMT so far. Under the scheme   92% of the ACA releases accounted for by the priority sectors of water supply, sewerage, storm water drainage and solid waste management. 80 projects have been  physically completed till date.
