Peaceful Environment is needed for Sustainable Development- Shri Pranab Mukherjee

Kolkata: Saturday, October 20, 2008.

Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Union Minister of External Affairs expressed hope that our country will achieve 10% growth during current financial year but we must invest 40% of GDP to built infrastructure which is helpful for industry and trade, while addressing the 121st Annual General Meeting of Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Kolkata Today. He also said that peaceful environment is essential for sustainable development of our country.

Shri Mukherjee said that during 1901 to 1950, our GDP growth rate was nearly 1% which increased to average 13.5% during next 30 years. We achieved 8.9% growth rate on an average during last 4 years.

He also said that energy is essential for the development of our country but we are not able to supply energy to a big population. According to an estimate there will be a shortage of 400,000 megawatt of energy by 2015 which will be increased to nearly 800000 megawatt by 2050 AD.
