RAMs worth Rs.57 lakhs seized at Kolkata airport
Kolkata, November 10,2008
The Customs officers working in the air cargo complex, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport, Kolkata have detected a huge case of smuggling last week, while physically checking goods imported by a Kolkata based company. The consignment, imported from Singapore, was stated to be containing ‘hard disk drives’ and ‘motherboards’ for computers. However the size of the cartons appeared bigger. The concerned officers asked the importer’s agent to empty the cartons. Upon doing that all the cartons were found to possess very thick piece of sponge/foam at the bottom, ostensibly to protect the hard disks from shock. Following thorough checking by the customs officers 125 pieces of RAM i.e., memory modules for computers were found. The cartons containing motherboards had separate secret compartments at the bottom which were carrying 250 more pieces of RAM, which can only be accessed if opened from the bottom. Total, 5250 pieces of RAM, with estimated market value of Rs.57 lakhs were seized.
Further investigation is in progress.
