NO MOVE TO SHIFT GSI FROM KOLKATA

There is no move to shift the Headquarters of the Geological Survey of India from Kolkata. This was stated by Shri B. K. Handique, Union Minister of Mines in reply to a matter raised during Zero hour in Lok Sabha on Tuesday 7th July, 2009. Shri Handique added that Kolkata has become a part of GSI's hisstory and GSI has become a part of Kolkata's heritage.
The Minister also announced that he has approved upgrading of the GSI from the status of 'Subordinate Office' to the status of an 'Attached Office' with headquarters at Kolkata as recommended by the High Powered Committee and proposed by the GSI itself.
Consequent to the upgradation, technical and scientific matter not having policy implications will now be processed and managed within GSI itself and there would be no routine correspondence with the administrative Ministry in this regard.
Also consequent to the upgradation, the Director General, GSI will now liaise directly with Scientific Ministries on all matters of Science Policy.
