Today is Universal Children's day. Children are the leaders of tomorrow. If we treat, govern and decide their lives with humanity, honesty and without prejudice the investment will be unbelievable.

In Sri Lanka the on going war has affected the lives of children. Torture has shown an incensement in schools. Child abuse is also become a common practice and child laborers is high.€

According to Sri Lanka Truth four children, were wounded in Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) attack in Iraththinapuram, a suburb of Ki'linochchi town, Saturday around 12:15 p.m. Sri Lanka Truth has also reported cattlemen, on finding the partly decomposed corpse of a 15-year-old girl student€ in a wasteland at Yaakkarai in Karaveddi located on the southern boundary of Vadamaraadchi, informed Nelliyadi police. The girl was identified as the one gone missing€ after leaving her home in Yaakkarai to visit a relative living close by, sources in Karaveddi said.

The victim was identified as Baskaran Kowsalya, a grade ten student of Yaakkarai Vinaayakar Viththiyaalyam in Karaveddi.

Lanka Truth has reported a student killed in an accident just before the Universal children's day. A student was killed on the spot when she had fallen through a space between two seats in the bus she was travelling to the road and was run over by the same bus. P.M. Dilhani Prarthana Karunarathne, the twelve year old school girl from Dampalgoda, Kegalle studying in Grade seven of Swarna Jayanthi Vidyalaya at Kegalle fell to her death from a private bus while going to school yesterday.

She had boarded the private bus transporting children to school at 5.50 a.m. and had met with the unfortunate incident about a mile from her home. At the time of the incident she had been standing in the bus.

The residents in the area had appealed to CTB authorities several times to arrange a school bus for the children who travel from the area to Kegalle town to attend schools but to no avail say residents in the area. They point out the happening of such an incident only a day before the € ¡Universal Children€ ¢s Day€ ¢ is pathetic and displays the interest shown by the authorities in this country towards children.

Daily Mirror (27.08.2008) has reported the officer in charge of the Hakmana Police Station has reportedly gone into hiding following a sexual molestation complaint lodged against him by the parents of a 15 year old boy in Matara, police said.
Police spokesman Rangith Gunasekara said two police teams had been deployed to track down the police officer after the Matara Courts issued an arrest warrant against him.

A complaint was lodged by the boy€ ¢s parents at the Matara Police Station on August 19, alleging that their son had been illegally arrested and sexually molested by the OIC in the late hours of August 18.
Media has reported a case where Buddhists monks commit torture. Sri Kanthulage Harsha Udayangani, Pallikondage Lakmini Chndrani Perera, Jayathungage Nimesha Dilki Chathurangi, Jayani Gamage, Sashi Praba Sandeepani are all Grade 13 Arts students of the Bandaragama National School. They were ill treated by the Buddhists monks who teach in the same school.
So we as a nation to protect children from above mentioned sad and illegal practices otherwise the future of the nation depends on a sick younger generation.
