Hafez Nazeri Talks to PAAIA's Rudi Bakhtiar

Iranian American Musician Making History at Carnegie Hall

Thirty year old music sensation Hafez Nazeri is set to make history on Saturday, November 14th, in the Big Apple, when he becomes the first Iranian to perform at Carnegie Hall to a sold out crowd of three thousand.

Born to the legendary musician Shahram Nazeri, Hafez began voice, tanbour and setar lessons at the early age of three, placing first in many competitions.  By nine, Hafez was already stealing the limelight from his father, performing by his side in some of the most prestigious music festivals in Europe and the Middle East.

Hafez is not only praised for extending the technique of setar-playing but is also credited with creating a unique style for playing the daf that is now emulated by many of Iran's young daf players.

This isn't the first time this Nazeri will be making headlines though.  Back in 2000, Nazeri assembled a talented group of young performers to form the Rumi Ensemble. Together they performed Hafez's original compositions in a series of landmark concerts in twenty different Iranian cities.  In Tehran, 140,000 attended the Rumi Ensemble concert, setting a record for the entire Middle East.

I caught up with Hafez in New York, just two days before the big night, as he was  finishing up a rehearsal.
