Calcutta, Jan. 23: US consul- general Beth A. Payne was seen at the RSS's Shahid Minar rally today.
The rally was Mohanrao Bhagwat's first in Calcutta after he became the Sangh chief.
Payne was seen taking photographs for about 10 minutes but left before Bhagwat started speaking.
Ranendralal Bandopadhyay, the Sangh's chief in the eastern zone, said: "We did not invite the US consul-general. It was a surprise for us."
A US public affairs department official said Payne was an outgoing person who loved to meet people. "She (Payne) has also visited many Muslim institutions and met Muslim clerics. There is no need to read too much into her presence at the rally," he added.

RSS Supremo Visist to Kolakata Coincides with SHIBU Soren Betrayal to Tribal Aboriginal Negroid Black Untouchable World under threat to lose NDA support. Bhagwat joins the Marxist, TMC and Chidamabaram led Zionist Brahaminical War against Aboriginal Indigenous India.
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat Friday said he was not satisfied with the membership figure of the organisation in West Bengal.
"As far as the RSS all-India membership is concerned, we have altogether 40 lakh registered members. The figure is only one lakh inWest Bengal and I am not satisfied with it. We will increase this number in the coming years," Bhagwat told reporters at an interactive session here.
He said the RSS would try to increase the number of its shakhas (branches) in the state.
"Our target is that the RSS should have its shakhas in at least one lakh locations across the country in the coming years," Bhagwat said, adding that the RSS always keeps on reviewing its internal policies and carries out necessary restructuring periodically within theorganisation.
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangha (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat Saturday said there was a need for change in West Bengal and the people of the state were expecting it.
This change is not so Political, mind you.
For example, the Ananda Bazaar Star Anand group supported Marxist gestapo led by Buddhadev all over the period of Nandigram Singur Insurrections and defended the Marxist Ethnic Cleansing upto the day while the Left withdrew support from UPA Govt. on Nuclear deal.
From that day the Media group supports Ms Mamata Banerjee and her CHANGE Campaign.
The Bazaar group is the best defender of Hindutva and Zionism and pleads for the Sovereignty of Market.
The Media and the Marxists now align with the Hindutva Forces which represent the shining Sensex Hindu India. RSS Pressure on Shibu Soren to support All out Corporate Military Onslaught against Aboriginal, Indigenous refugee landscape as well as Human scape explains the Ruling Hegemony Political Equations.
CPIM losing ground and elections in Bengal has openly aligned with RSS which pleads for DEPORTATION of Black untouchable Refugees and CPIM is all set to accomplish the Agenda of Economic Ethnic Cleansing.
Mind you, Muslim League Politics was stimulated by Bengali Bramin leading Cong and RSS leaders who ensured Power Transfer to Brahamin Bania Raj with effective Gandhian Lead and further the Hegemony succeeded to flare UP worst Possible Riots in Bengal and Punjab culminating Indian Holocaust which ejected out SC OBC communities as well Sikh Nationalities out of their HOMELNAND and finally FINISHED the Aboriginal Indigenous national Movement!
I am afraid to warn you that the Change in Bengal is heralding the Return of Holocaust in India once again!
"There is truly a need for change in West Bengal. People are expectant of a change here and they are waiting for it with a lot of hope," Bhagwat told a RSS rally in Kolkata. He claimed that hundreds of acres had been forcibly acquired (by the state government) from the poor farmers in the name of setting up industry and special economic zones (SEZs), which was "bringing ruin to the agricultural population of the state".
Bhagwat also raised the issue of illegal immigration from Bangladesh, which he alleged was affecting the economy and law and order situation of India's border areas. The citizenship Amendment bill 2003 was moved by EX Refugee LK Adwani to snatch the Human and Civil rights as well as citizenship of East Bengal origin Resettled partition Victim Sc OBC
Bengali refugees which was enacted with proactive Cong as well as marxist support led by respectively Pranab and Buddha, both Brahamin.
The Change in Bengal unites the Trio in a Poisonous Chemistry to kill the aboriginal Indigenous and Minority communities countrywide! Since the Icon and Idol of dead Comrade Jyoti Basu would not be enough to stop Ms Mamata Banerjee from winning Writers Building wherefrom the Statue of Dr, Bidhan Roy had been withdrawn while Basu was on Ventilation. Basu replaces Roy. But it is not going to help the Marxists as SC, OBC, ST and Minority Vote Bank has broken up.
CPIM led by Basu converted itself into a Communal Bengali Brahmin nationality Party and it Ruled Bengal uninterrupted for over Three Decades constituting An All Brahmin Front which is known as Left Front.
Thus, the best Survial Startegy seems to be an alignment with Brahmin Hindutva Forces which grew stronger as market dominating Community in US Promoted Free Market democracy and Bengali Intelligentsia, Media and Civil Society use Bengali Language and culture as USABLE CONDOMS only!
Threat to borders indicates India's weakness: Bhagwat
Threat to borders and internal security besides attacks on Indians indicated India's "weakness" to firmly tackle these problems, RSS chief Mohanrao Bhagwat said today.
"For the last 60 years a small country like Pakistan has adopted a hostile attitude towards India's desire for friendship. Despite 26/11, we are talking of friendship with that country, the RSS chief told a rally of RSS volunteers here.
"The Pakistani Prime Minister has stated that he cannot guarantee that there will be no repeat of 26/11 in India. Pakistan should be taught a lesson," he said.
Stating that Pakistan had its eye on Kashmir, Bhagwat said that three lakh Kashmiris who were thrown out should be re-settled in the valley.
In an apparent reference to reported Chinese incursions in Ladakh, he said, "what is happening on our northern border has not been stated clearly.
Samayantar has rightly exposed the Brahmin Dominating Indian Media dealing with the ICONISATION of Prabhash Joshi who as a recruiter promoted and defended the Brahamins as Editors and promoted them to decision making posts without any exam while the others remained BONDED labur only subject to be EXAMINED. The Bengali Media is very very Communal as well as Brahaminical. Civil Society and Intelligentsia mostly Brahamin only follow suit. It is the most Fertile Ground for Hindutva forces as it had been before 15 th August 1947. It is the greatest danger we face.
Professor Kharat has been attacked in Pune as he is the editor of Mulnivasi Nayak. We encounter all RSS Men and Women in every field of Bengal and quite Scientifically in a Marxist way as well, they try their best to HINDUISE us, the Black Untouchables, ST, SC and OBC communities and even the Converted Mulnivasi Communities including most rigid Muslims. They would Never attack us but they would Defeinitely KILL us!
"Vote bank politics is making the situation worse," he said.
He also stressed developing a "strong" foreign policy in the country to combat terror attacks.
"We have been very lenient with our neighbouring Pakistan and China. We need to have a strong nationalist sentiment like Israel to avoid any recurrence of terror strikes like 26/11," the RSS chief said.
RSS chief Mohan Rao Bhagwat on Friday said that the Centre had at last realised the need to act against the Maoists, but regretted solid action was yet to be taken.
Describing the Maoist threat as 'dangerous', Bhagwat stressed the need for a comprehensive policy to usher in development in the backward areas by setting up an efficient administration which can keep Maoists at bay.
|
---|
He regretted that people were being kidnapped by the ultras at gunpoint.
"To avoid the Maoist threat, we need a constructive policy of encouraging development and against lawlessness in all backward areas as well as creation of awareness against Maoist threats," he said.
Bhagwat was confident that awareness and strong policy by the Centre as well as states would be able to isolate the extremist elements.
Bharatiya Janata Party [ Images ] president Nitin Gadkari [ Images ] has denied he is an RSS appointee and asserted that he was taking his own decisions -- though often after consulting senior party and Sangh leaders -- and that he was not "puppet" in the hands of the Central leadership.
"Last four years as the president of BJP in Maharashtra [ Images ], RSS is part of my life conviction. But RSS leaders never direct me, never give me any instruction. And even as BJP president, I am taking my own decisions," Gadkari told Karan Thapar in an interview for CNN-IBN.
He insisted that senior BJP leader L K Advani [ Images ] and his predecessor Rajnath Singh were the first to suggest that he should become BJP president. He denied that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat had imposed him on the BJP.
"Some people there are keeping this image that RSS is controlling BJP. This is not the correct thing... They (RSS) never interfere in our day-to-day activities, never interfere in the selection of candidates and politics," Gadkari said.
However, Gadkari maintained that BJP and RSS have an "ideological relationship" and the party often discusses issues with the latter.
On whether BJP had become the front organisation of RSS, Gadkari said this perception was due to the gap between image and reality.
Asked if BJP could reject an advice given by RSS, Gadkari said, "Yes, many times. There is democracy in RSS. Even when I go to the highest leader in the RSS, I can discuss with him and exchange with him that this is my opinion. When there is a decision of RSS regarding its matters, every RSS swayamsewak is ready to accept that."
The BJP president described Bhagwat and former RSS chief K S Sudarshan as a democratic leader with whom he discussed issues often and had differences on several occasions. Gadkari said as BJP president he could follow his path.
On a question about BJP being identified with Kandhamal riots in Orissa, Ram Sene in Karnataka [ Images ] and Varun Gandhi's [ Images ] alleged communal speech, Gadkari said, "We are a democratic party. We are many leaders in the party having different views."
He argued that these did not represent the views of the party. "As far as Ram Sene is concerned, it is not directly or indirectly related with BJP. It is a section of the people, they decide that they want to attach everything with BJP," he said.
Gadkari asserted that though he was new to Delhi [ Images ] politics, he had the full cooperation of the senior leaders and will be "100 per cent successful to get a good position" for his party.
On the issue of cooperation from the four senior leaders -- Sushma Swaraj [ Images ], Arun Jaitley [ Images ], M Venkaiah Naidu and Ananth Kumar -- Gadkari said, "They are supporting me from the core of their heart and they have guided me very properly. Taking all precaution about my activity, and they are supporting me."
Gadkari, who has confessed to being new to Central politics, denied that these senior leaders were turning him into a puppet.
"Not at all they have such type of intention. And the people who know me know that I will never become a puppet. I can make bonafide mistakes but I cannot make malafide mistakes," he said.
Striking a positive note, Gadkari said he aimed to increase BJP's vote share by 10 per cent to take on Congress.
"We have to concentrate on SC, ST, minorities and unorganized sector labours. If we concentrate on this, we can increase some percentage of votes," he said.
Gadkari said BJP would strive to work on Antyodaya thinking of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya to serve the last man in the queue.
He defended Hindutva as "a way of life" and one which is "related with cultural nationalism".
Insisting that BJP would engage in politics for development as "Hindutva is related with nationalism and nationalism is development of the country".
Gadkari defended dissent in the state units in Rajasthan [ Images ], Bihar, Karnataka and Uttarakhand [ Images ], saying BJP was a democratic party and so was different from other parties.
He maintained that after he became president of the party, the problem in the Rajasthan unit was solved.
He reiterated that party issues should be discussed only on party platforms. "One thing which I learnt from it, the lesson, is don't talk the issue directly to the press," he said.
Gadkari claimed 99 per cent of the problem in Rajasthan had been solved.
Terming Maoist guerrillas as the greatest threat to the nation, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat Friday said the union government has "at last" woken up to the challenge though it still needs to act.
"The centre has at last woken up to the reality of the challenge but the action is still pending. The Maoist insurgence has to be stopped," Bhagwat told a press conference here.
He said the government would have to address a few basic problems in the society to combat the Maoist issue.
"The centre should strictly address the problems of acute lawlessness and strengthen the intelligence network in the regions where this problem is being reported.
"It must expedite developmental projects in those violence-hit regions and involve the local people in that process and stop exploiting the common masses," the RSS chief said.
Commenting on the central forces' offensive launched on the rebels, he said: "I cannot say whether the ongoing police operation is sufficient or a military action is needed. It's a matter of judgement depending on the gravity of the situation.
"But I, personally, don't think the matter has aggravated to such an extent that military deployment is necessary to control the situation."
Rashtraniti not Rajniti interests RSS: Bhagwat
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat said on Sunday that the Sangh was not involved in politics and had no role in the appointment of the new BJP national president Nitin Gadkari.
"I have said it several times that we have not been instrumental in the appointment of the new (BJP) president. He (Gadkari) has also said it. Yet people say that since we belong to same place (Nagpur), so the Sangh must have a role in his appointment," Bhagwat said in Lucknow.
Stating that RSS is concerned about "Rashtra Niti" (national policy) and not the "Rajniti" (politics), he said, "The RSS works to expand its organisation."
"Door se dekhenge, galatfahami hogi. Andar aakar anubhav karna parega (From a distance, there could be misconception (about the RSS). So join the organisation to experience it)," he added.
Expressing his unhappiness over the hoardings that have been put across the city to welcome him, Bhagawat said, "I am supposed to stay in different parts of the country. So this visit is part of the same tradition. The RSS never seeks popularity. It works to expand its base."
RSS not involved with assassination of Gandhiji: Bhagwat
Kolkata: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat today claimed that the organisation was not involved with the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi and said RSS workers actually had been engaged as guards of the 'Father of the Nation' when he was shot dead on January 30, 1948.
When asked in a press conference about his observation on RSS' involvement in the assassination of Gandhiji, Bhagwat said, "It's absolutely a lie. Already two Commissions have given their opinions.
"One month before the assassination, the Delhi Pradesh Congress had given the charge of security of Gandhiji to RSS.
Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Home Minister Sardar Vallbhbhai Patel -- both were disciples of Gandhiji -- wanted to keep the RSS under pressure," the RSS chief said.
"If the RSS was responsible for this, why did not the Congress, which ruled the country for 30 years, take any action against it?" he asked.

RSS chief Bhagwat critical of government policy on China
Raipur, Jan 21 (ANI): Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has criticised the Central Government's policy on China.
Addressing a rally of RSS workers here on Wednesday, Bhagwat said: "If we talk about China, one day Indian Government says that the land is gone, the next day it says no, it is still there, the third day it says everything is fine, we also go to that side of border and they also come to our side.

Fourth day they say something is wrong. What is the exact situation, we don't know. It seems somewhat like the nuclear deal and the Copenhagen meet."
He also slammed both the US and China for pursuing an anti-India agenda.
"The US is seen advocating support for India but actually it is powering Pakistan while attempting to impose its agenda in South Asia," he added.
Referring to economic issues, he said the welfare of a person standing in the last row of society should be the parameter for development.
"The soaring stock market should not be the criteria to judge the economic growth in the country," he added.
Bhagwat also called upon people to join the RSS to know more about the organisation rather than reading about it in magazines. (ANI)
Soft Bhadralok Hindutva Under 'Left' Garb – VB Rawat
[We have received this guest piece from Vidya Bhushan Rawat, which looks at another pathology behind the 'Left' Front and its entrenchment in West Bengal politics. We are pleased to present this as it underlines a point seldom registered by self-proclaimed 'Leftists' and 'secularists': the saffron under the red colour of Indian marxism in general but especially of the CPM. The Sachar committee had recently only revealed what many had always suspected with regard to Muslims. With regard to the Dalits, analysts have been at pains to point out that West Bengal ranks far below even UP, in terms of ownership of land by Dalits. So much for its much touted land reforms. While publishing this piece, let us also underline, with the author that when, in the height of the anti-Islam hysteria during NDA rule, LK Advani's Home Ministry proposed 'bio-metric identification cards' - to check the problem of 'infiltration' (!?), then too, Buddhadeb was its most enthusiastic supporter. It is actually interesting that when the ruling classes and parties under Indira Gandhi used to see CIA everywhere, the CPM too saw CIA; and then when the NDA started seeing ISI 'under every bed as it were, CPM followed suit. Curious, would you say? Read on, for the real debate on the 'Left' should be here, which is not to say that we agree with every thing said here. - AN]
Nandigram is burning and the Neros of the left front governments are watching it with great patience. Those who are up in arms against any displacement elsewhere remain mute spectators at the butchering of people in this 'war zone', as the governor of the state Mr Gopal Krishna Gandhi mentioned in his statement. CPM and its leadership were prompt in condemning the governor for his remark as unconstitutional. If governor's remark is out of the touch of Bengal's reality then how can one justify the 'call' for 'recapture' of land by the top leadership of CPM?
The fact is that this unprecedented crisis needed a strong response. It is rare for a governor of the stature of Gopal Krishna Gandhi to speak out openly against the state government. It clearly reflects his mind and pain on what the state is witnessing in Nandigram. A governor should not keep quiet if the state government that operates under him violates basic principals of governance. Whether it is Gujarat or Bengal, the state can not withdraw itself from the governance asking people to take the law in their own hands, as CPM and its chief minister continue to chant. It is not only shocking for a party to defend the illegal act of their cadre to recapture the land. Why was government silent on this for such a long and why were the central forces being kept at the mercy of the party cadre. A party can not be asked to take over the role of the governance. Bengal's government is using the same language which very unfortunately Rajiv Gandhi spoke in the aftermath of Indira Gandhi's assassination and later on Narendra Modi, in Gujarat after the Godhara fire. A chief minister is expected to act and provide protection to the people and not to teach lesson to those who faulted or disagreed.
West Bengal is passing through a big crisis. It is the test of its patience with a government which actually is the symbol of brahmanical supremacy and tyranny in the name of Marxism. Now, that supremacy is also being challenged by Mamata Banerjee, who herself has no clean record despite claiming to lead all the people's movement. In fact, any one supporting her should first ask her the question what her stand is on land reform and secondly how long would she flirt with the Hindutva forces in Delhi. But it looks as if all the opposition forces are uniting in their battle against the CPM. However, ground realities are different and mere media attention might not change the situation, though the halo of good governance and Panchayati Raj and much-touted land reforms the left stand exposed in front of the world.
Whether the government goes or not, is not the question. Nandigram has silver lining on the one side and duplicity of Bengal's Bhadralok politics on the other. Let us discuss about the silver lining. Despite all our condemnation, one thing that needed to be expressed here is the spirit of the people of Nandigram, which defies all convention so far. The governments of the day, whether in Bengal or elsewhere are shamelessly pursuing the agenda of acquiring people's land for the SEZ, big dams and big companies, without rehabilitating them. Those in power know that the people's struggle start for a few months and fizzles out. And that has given them the reason to pursue with their dangerous policies of land acquisition. Hence the question is really not about the face of CPM. The question is that there is a broader agreement in the mainstream 'national' parties and regional parties for 'reform'. They have gone far beyond people's aspirations and the result is that these movement will shake the nation and find space somewhere else which might not be democratic.
Unfortunately, many of their friends thought the Marxists as the only party committed to 'land reform'. But Buddhadev had other ideas. He had to attract the middle class Bengalies who felt betrayed of 30 years of left rule without any industrialization. Disturbed over the 'loss' of 'face' of Kolkata and Bengal as an 'industrial hub', Buddha government went over board to attract 'investment'. The selection of the company from Indonesia was equally important to understand. Despite its track record, the Marxist would want us to believe that contract given to this 'Indonesian' firm is according to secular and anti-imperialist beliefs of the left front. This, at a time when the Muslims and Dalits are regularly at the receiving end in West Bengal. The disturbing question is why particular area of Nandigram or Singur or why 19000 hectare of land was required. Many report charge Party MP Laxman Seth, a man who is heading Haldia Petrochemicals, as allegedly instigating the land grabbing in the area. All this was done to promote 'industrialisation' of Bengal. And in this battle to dislocate people and invite industries to suck the blood of the people, the government got wholehearted support from the 'national' media. Like Gujarat where Narender Modi's corrupt practices and criminal past as a chief minister is easily ignored by the equally corrupt corporatised media where corporate interest are bigger than the people's interest, all in the name of development, Buddha Dev Bhattacharya also became a star of the media even when a large number of his party persons were not in demand there.
CPM and its allies have been opposing Congress party's new economic policies. They have participated in numerous programmes, condemned Narendra Modi and rightly so, they organized massive demonstration against WTO and yet when their own state is concern, they remain mute. They do not even want a discussion leave along allowing people to visit Nandigram.
It is clear that the proposed SEZ would displace thousands of people particularly the rural poor. In the case of Nandigram and Singur, these would automatically be the poor Muslims and Dalits, who unfortunately are not the vote bank of the CPM. A party like CPM whose chief minister spoke the language of Lal Krishna Advani when he was home minister of India, on the issue of Madrasas and his stand on so-called Bangla Refugees, Buddh Dev and his party thought it is good to create an SEZ some where else which does not affect the Bangla upper caste or CPM's supporter's zone. After all, why should they annoy their own supporter who would get the benefit of Tata's promised Rs One lakh car and jobs in Salim's company? It would not be the Muslims and Dalits who would get job in these companies. This opinion maker Bhadralok had charged the CPM in the past with insensitivity towards its own issues and condition of stagnation in West Bengal in past three decade's left front rule. Left front has to come clean on the issue of Dalits and Muslims in Bengal. Where are their land reforms? Where is Dalit and Muslim representation in their government jobs, police and elsewhere? Well, the bhadralok make us believe that they don't believe in caste system and therefore there is no need for reservation. Of course, it can not deny the fact that the scavenging community in Bengal is worst hit by its manipulations apart from the Muslims. The condition of Dalits in Bengal is a matter of grave concern. Scavenging is still prevalent though CPM dominated cadre and intellectuals would not allow outsiders to expose this bitter truth of Bengal. Even loyalists like N Ram and his ' The Hindu' did not think twice before giving Bengal clean chit on issues of scavenging and now on Nandigram, the most 'secular' newspaper in India has turned brahmanical. Of course, those reading 'The Hindu' in the South know it well that it serves the brahmanical interest under the guise of secularism. The other loyalist for Buddha Dev at the moment is Goenka's Indian Express, voice of India's corrupt middle classes supporting an irresponsible privatization. Express has been supporting every effort of the government that displaces people and support Industries.
But suddenly with huge turn around, the other dominating media houses could not ignore the public pressure and started condemning CPM. Their own friends started deserting them. This resulted in media scrutiny and blame game. Embarrassed, the party banned media and activists from going to Nandigram. And look who was the first visitor after CRPF reached Nandigram. It was Lal Krishna Advani and his Hindutva team, that visited Nandigram.
It is rare for a communist chief minister to be complimented by the Hindutva Hridaya Samrat. When Lal Krishna Advani was home minister, he lauded Buddha's effort to fight against 'Bangla' 'infiltration. Buddha was also complimented for his remarks against Madrasas. Therefore, Bengal CPM reflects a domination of the Bhadralok and their political view point. The Bengali middle class has already been communalized long back and one can find these reflections in Durga Puja celebrations also.
The problem of Nandigram is wider. Why was such a place chosen. Is it because the area has a sizeable Dalit and Muslim presence? In Bengal so far the issue of Dalits have not got any support from any political outfits. As far as Muslims are concern, Bengal is the only state where we find starvation deaths among the Muslim community in Midnapur and Jalangir. The Bhadralok dominated CPM's leadership might have thought this would go unresisted. Yet, they proved wrong. The brave people of Nandigram and Singur have actually rendered a great service to strengthen movement for land rights all over the country. Governments, corporations who are working to suck the blood of the people must also understand that their theory that after initial reactions people forget things, have proved absolutely wrong in Nandigram. The way the people have fought for their right to dignity and land will go in the history of India as one of the most sustained response to an effort of the government to occupy their land.
The question is not whether the government is shifting SEZ elsewhere or not. The question is how come the forces of the left are silent on growing discontent in their home territory. Why should the government allow a political party to have a field day, to kill the opponent and 'capture' the land? Prakash Karat says that there is nothing wrong for the supporter of the CPM to 'recapture' their land, which was hijacked by Trinamul Congress workers. These political statements should not be taken on a serious note except for the fact that they are not meant to introspect. Prakash Karat's biggest blunder was to say that Maoists have joined the movement. It seems he realized it late that there are radical left groups who are uniting in Singur and Nandigram. But Karat's worry is not Mamata Banerjee but these left groups who can teach CPM and their goons a lesson in their own language. CPM has never bothered about the opposition in Bengal which is mute and Bhadrlok dominated like the CPM. It is worried about the reorganization of the radical left forces in the state. Therefore, it does not surprise us when Karat in his press conference in Delhi, charge the 'Maoists' from Jharkhand for spreading violence in Bengal. Mr Karat knows well that the National Security Advisor has already stated this that the red corridors are increasing.
But more than that, the question again comes to the forefront of those in power. Nandigram has shown that people will resist any attempt to dislocate them in the name of development. Whether it is Khammam in Andhra Pradesh or Kalinganagar in Orissa, the war cries of the people should not be termed as 'revivalism' of Naxal movement in India. It is not therefore a co-incidence that the Naxalbari movement in the Darjeeling hills of West Bengal was butchered in the same way as we have been witnessing in Nandigram. The only difference was that time it was state police which caused enormous death in the village of Naxalbari while today it seems the police remain mute when the CPM's cadre started their 'gharwapasi', very similar like the offensive return of the tribals and Dalits by the Hindutva brigade in Chhatishgarh and Gujarat.
General Secretary Prakash Karat also asked people not to equate the Nandigram incident with that of Godhra. But comparison will always be made as long as those who kills come from the same class and communities and those who suffer too hails from the same. In Gujarat the Muslims were butchered by a powerful state dominated by the Hindu upper caste, in Delhi it was the Sikhs who were killed by the same state and in Nandigram, it is again the Muslims and Dalits who are at the receiving end. I can understand the problem of those writing about 'poor' being killed in Bengal because none of them really want that Buddha Dev be declared new avatar of Hindutva. But so far all indications suggest CPM's common agenda seems to be soft Hindutva in Bengal by targeting the poor through its land mafia and Muslims in the name of Bangla refugees and growing Madrasas. CPM has lost an opportunity to lead people's movement in India which is now uniting to fight against privatization of public resources and highly tainted liberlisation and globalisation where corporations would call the shot and people would get the shot if they oppose the diktat of the status quoists. Nandigram has shown that people will not wait for a Messiahs to come to rescue them, they will unite and fight endlessly against oppression and exploitation. The battle for honor and dignity has just begun now.

Patriots like Netaji neglected: Mamata
Regretting that patriots like Subhas Chandra Bose had remained neglected in Indian political history, Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee today demanded that mysterious disappearance of Netaji be immediately resolved.
"Three commissions of inquiry have failed to solve the mysterious disappearance of Netaji, but this should be resolved as early as possible," Banerjee, who is Railway Minister, said after unveiling the bust of the patriot on the eve of his birthday, at Alipore court complex.
Banerjee said it was regrettable that Netaji had remained neglected in Indian politics. "True patriots should get their due honour," she said.
The Trinamool leader said that Netaji's life and work should find place in the curricula of school text books.
The function was organised by Alipore court bar association.

Bengali Brahmins
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bengali Brahmins are those Brahmins who traditionally reside in the Bengal region of the Indian subcontinent, currently comprising the Indian state of West Bengal, Tripura, Assam and Bangladesh. When the British left India in 1947, carving out separate nations (see partition), a number of families moved from Bangladesh to be within the borders of the newly defined Indian Republic, and continued to migrate for several decades thereafter.
Bengali Brahmins are generally better educated than the average Hindu, and a number of prominent figures of India belong to this community. They had leanings toward Shaktism and Tantra . They make a claim of being pure Aryans. Vārendra, for instance, meant rain-maker magicians[1]. Historically, they have been the standard bearers of Madhyadeshiya (the historic-cultural region of the upper Ganga-Yamuna doab which was the seat of Panch-Gauda brahmins) Indo-Aryan culture in Bengal. Panch-Gauda and Panch-Dravida are two chief divisions of Brahmins, as per the śloka from Rājatarangini of Kalhaṇa / Kalhana:
कर्णाटकाश्च तैलङ्गा द्राविडा महाराष्ट्रकाः , गुर्जराश्चेति पञ्चैव द्राविडा विन्ध्यदक्षिणे ||
सारस्वताः कान्यकुब्जा गौडा उत्कलमैथिलाः, पञ्चगौडा इति ख्याता विन्ध्स्योत्तरवासिनः ||
Meaning :(The-) Karnātakas, Tailangas, Dravidas, Mahārāshtrakās and Gurjaras; these five(-types who-) live south of Vindhya (- mountains) are (called-) "five Dravidas" (- brahmins); (whereas-) Sārasvatas, Kānyakubjas, Gaudas, Utkalas, and Maithilas, who live north of Vindhya (- mountains) are known as "five Gaudas" (-brahmins)[2].
Dorilāl Śarmā says that the 'Five Gaudas' mentioned above were settled in region around Indus (Sārasvata brahmins), Kannauj and its territories (Kānyakubja brahmins),Mithila (Maithil Brahmins)and Orissa (Utkala Brahmins); the fifth branch Gauda brahmins settleed in the remaining areas north of Vindhya mountains ,in two distinct regions (1)Haryana and adjacent districts of Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh, and (2) northern Kosala around ancient Śrāvasti; he quotes Matsya Purana (chapter-12, śloka 30) in which Śrāvasti is said to be seat of Gauda brahmins [3]. According to this view, South Bihar, Bengal, Assam, etc were not inhabited by any of the brahmins mentioned by Kalhana. Hence, at the time of Kalhana, Bengali brahmins had not emerged as a distinct branch of Panch-Gauda. But all Bengali brahmins are descendants of Panch-Gauda, excepting some Dākṣiṇātyas Vaidikas who came from South India originally but are now part and parcel of Bengali brahmins [4]. Gauda meant the region from western Uttar Pradesh to Rajasthan, but it was also used for Bengal in mediaeval age. Entire North India was also called Gauda country, which is the reason why five north Indian branches have received the common name Panch-Gauda [5].
In the 19th and 20th national convention of Kanyakubja Brahmins by Kanyakubja Mahati Sabha, in 1926 and 1927 respectively, it reiterated Bhumihar Brahmins to be Kanyakubja Brahmins and appealed for unity among Kanyakubja Brahmins whose different branches included Sanadhya, Pahadi, Jujhoutia, Saryupareen, Chattisgadhi, Bhumihar and different Bengali Brahmins.[6]

[edit] History
It is claimed that large scale migration of Brahmins from Kanyakubja region occurred during Pala and Sena periods. However historical evidence attests significant presence of Brahmins in Bengal since the Maurya period. The Jain Acharya Bhadrabahu, regarded to be the preceptor of Chandragupta Maurya is said to have been born in Brahmin family of Pundravardhana ( or Puṇḍra , the region north of Ganges and west of Brahmaputra in Bengal, later known as Vārendra). A copper-plate grant from the Gupta period found in the vicinity of Somapura mentions a Brahmin donating land to a Jain vihara at Vatagohali. Such evidences suggest Puṇḍra or Vārendra and regions west of Bhagirathi (called Radha in ancient age) to be seats of brahmins from ancient times; Rādhi and Varendra are still chief branches of Bengali brahmins settled in these regions [7]..
The three main divisions among Bengali brahmins are :
- Rādhi from Radh (region south-west of Ganga).
- Varendra, from Vārendra region (North-East) or Puṇḍra.
- Vaidika (migrants, originally experts of Vedic knowledge).
[edit] Traditional accounts
The traditional accounts of the origin are given in texts termed Kulagranthas (e.g., Kuladīpīkā), composed around the 17th century. They mention a ruler named Ādiśūra who invited five Brahmins from Kanyakubja [8], so that he could conduct a yajña, because he could not find Vedic experts locally. Traditional texts mention that Ādiśūra was ancestor of Ballāl Sena from maternal side and five brahmins had been invited in AD 1077 [9].
Historians have located a ruler named Ādiśūra ruling in north Bihar, but not in Bengal[citation needed]. But Ballāl Sena and his predecessors ruled over both Bengal and Mithila (i.e., North Bihar). It is unlikely that the brahmins from Kānyakubja may have been invited to Mithila for performing a yajña, because Mithila was a strong base of brahmins since Vedic age [10].
Another account mentions a king Shyamal Varma who invited five Brahmins from Kānyakubja who became the progenitors of the Vaidika Brahmins. A third account refers to five brahmins being the ancestors of Vārendra brahmins as well. From similarity of titles (e.g., upādhyāya), the first account is most probable.
Kulin Brahmins are those Brahmins in Bengal who can trace themselves to the five families of Kanauj (Kanyakubja), Uttar Pradesh who migrated to Bengal. The five families were of the five different gotras (Shandilya, Bharadwaj, Kashyap, Vatsya and Swavarna). They are widely believed to be at the apex of Bengal's caste hierarchy.[who?]
The kulin families are further divided into two sections:
Barendra : Belonging to those families who settled at the north or north east region of Ganges or Padma river. Rarhi : Belonging to those families who settled at the south or southwest region of Ganges or Padma river.
[edit] Divisions among Bengali Brahmins
The three main divisions of Bengali Brahmins are
- (1) Rādhi from Radh , modern West Bengal south of Ganges.
- (2) Varendra, from Varendra region (North-East)
- (3) Vaidika
Other minor divisions are :
- (4) Saptaśati
- (5) Pirāli
- (6) Patita
It is believed that the Brahmins of Bengal adapted kulinism from a similar hierarchical system used by the Brahmins of Mithilā, although Kānyakubja and more especially Saryupāriya were also highly scrupulous. The five original Brahmins belonged to five gotras : Śāndilya, Kāśyapa, Vatsa, Bhārdvāja, Sāvarṇa [11].
Both Brahmins and Kayasthas in Bengal have followed a system that ranks the clans hierarchically. The Kulinas formed the higher ranking clans.
[edit] Rādhi
Rādhi (also Rāṭhi in some old texts) is the major branch of Bengali brahmins . The descendants of these five Pancyājñika brahmins were hierarchically organised into three categories :
(1) Kulin comprised the most noble brahmins among these, who possessed all the nine qualities fixed by Ballāl Sena (nine qualities or "navadhā lula lakṣanam" were :āchāra, vinaya, vidyā, pratiṣṭhā, tirtha, darśana, karma, niṣṭhā, śreṣṭha-vritti, tapa, dāna) [12].
(2)Śrotriya is the second rank among the descendants of these five brahmins because they were deft in Vedic knowledge but were considered to be somewhat inferior to the Kulina brahmins (possessing 8 out of 9 noble qualities).
(3)Vamśaja is the third rank which was a result of kulinas marrying outside kulinas [12].
Major titles adopted by the high Rādhi brahmins :
- Mukhopādhyāya and its adaptation Mukherjee a Kulin brahmin
- Bandopādhyāya and its adaptation Banerjee a Kulin brahmin
- Chattopādhyāya and its adaptation Chatterjee a Kulin brahmin
- Bhattāchārya and its adaptation Bhattacharya/ Bhattacharjee a Kulin brahmin
- Gangopādhyāya and its adaptation Ganguli / Ganguly a Kulin brahmin
Jāti-Bhāṣkar mentions that those who were given grants along the Ganges by Ballāl Sena were called Gangopādhyāya (literally 'the Vedic teachers in the regions around the Ganges')[13].
Mukhopādhyāya means chief Vedic teacher. Bandopādhyāya is a Sanskritized form of 'Banodha + upādhyāya' , Banodha being the ancient name of Raebareli-Unnāva whence their ancestors had come from [14].
Bhattāchārya meant 'expert of Vedic rituals'. This was an honorary title awarded to a Rādhi or Vārendra brahmin who excelled in spiritual and vedic matters. The Bhattāchārya's are generally referred to as the Hindu Priests in Bengal.
[edit] Vārendra
These brahmins also claim descent from five original brahmins, although four out of five names are different, and they are also hierarchically organised into three groups :
(1) Śri Kulin comprising Bāgchi, Chākrāborty (Chākrāvārti), Lāhiri, Māitra, Bhāduri, Sānyal, etc.
(2) Śrotriya have Nanda, Bhato Shāstri, Karanja, Laduli, Navasi, etc.
(3) Kaṣṭa Kulin compride of 85 gains (villages given in grant by Sena kings).
Another intermediate order is called Kāpa(originally Kulin but negligent in duty) which is between first two.
Other famous titles of Bengali Kulin brahmins are Bhattāchārya, Majumdāra, Rāi, Choudhary, Roy Chowdhury, Jovādāra, Mishra, etc. There were many big landlords among Vārendra and Rādhi brahmins alike, bearing titles such as Roy and Roy Chowdhury. While Bhattāchārya literally meant 'experts of Vedic rituals', the Rāi/Roy, Choudhary and Roy Chowdhury were administrative titles, conferred not only on the Brahmin landlords, Rajas and/or zamindars, but also to landlords from other castes who owned and administered vast landed properties. Whereas titles, such the Dasguptas and Senguptas belong to the Vaidyas.
[edit] Vaidikas
These are of two types :
- Dākṣiṇātyas (coming from South India originally but now part and parcel of Bengali brahmins.
- Pāschātyas, coming from western and northern India originally but now part of Bengali brahmins.
These were experts of Vaidika knowledge who were invited to Bengal in different ages, later than the original five brahmins from which Rādhi brahmins originated.
[edit] Saptaśati
Before the coming of Five Brahmins, there were 700 houses of brahmins in Bengal, but now they are few. They were less learned than the migrants and therefore were deprived of patronage. Some of them mixed with the immigrants, which explains their decline in relative population. Many Saptaśatis became priests of lower castes and were labelled as Agradāni and grahavipra. Main titles are Arath, Bālkhāvi, Jagāye, Pikhoori, Mulkajoori, Bhagāye, Gāi, etc.
[edit] Others
- Pirāli : literally, boycotted brahmins. Some kulin brahmins mixed with Muslims in eating and other activities and were therefore boycotted by the orthodox sections. Prominent among these were Thākurs, anglicised as Tagores. Thākurs literally meant lords and were big landowners.
- Patita : Some Bengali brahmins were publicly declared to be fallen brahmins.
Chakraborty (Chakravarti) is a title suitable for emperors granted to some Bengali brahmins.
Another peculiar title is Chir Kori or Chir Koḍi.
[edit] Impact of British occupation
The kulinist system degenerated during the 18-19th century and is no longer popular. The British occupation of Bengal radically transformed the Bengali culture. Bengal has now gone through two century of Christian missionary efforts and a quarter century of a Marxist government in the state of West Bengal. Bengal was divided by the British colonial rulers. Eastern Bengal was a Muslim majority region which resulted in the first partition of Bengal in 1905, and then final partition in 1947. Although the interaction with the British resulting in what is termed the Bengal Renaissance (almost wholly Brahmin) it altered the hold of traditional mainstream Hinduism in the region.
[edit] Naming conventions
Many Bengali Brahmin family names are written in two different ways. For example, Chattopadhyay (compound of village name "Chaṭṭa" and "upādhyāya" denoting "priest, teacher" originally granted with the village named Chaṭṭa) is the Sanskritized form of the local Prakrit word "chaturjye", anglicized to Chatterjee.
Similar analyses may be performed on Mukhurjye/Mukherjee/Mukhopādhyāya and Banurjye/Banerjee/Bandyopādhyāya. Bhattāchārya which is made by two words Bhatta and Achārya which means teacher also called as Bhattāchārjee. Tagore is the anglicized form of Thakur, meaning "lord". Other Bengali Brahmin family names are anglicized in particular ways that have become the standard English spellings over time. Other Bengali Brahmin surnames are Chakraborty, Sanyal, Ghoshal etc.
The most famous Bengali Brahmin family which originally belonged to Calcutta (Kolkata) are the Sabarna Roy Choudhury, which had transferred the tenancy rights of Sutanuti, Gobindapur and Kolikata to the East India Company at the behest of the Mughal Emperor.

This dossier, accessed by The Sunday Express, was first opened during the British Raj and has a bewildering list of details -- from his "known disguises" to his "special habits and associates."
The last update in the dossier was in 1963, after the Chinese aggression when Basu was detained.
Marked as Number 35 in the dossier, Basu's aliases are mentioned as: Basu, Jyoti, alias Bocha, alias Bakul.
His address is the "Baradi Baidyer Bazar in Dacca (East Pakistan)" and his physical attributes listed are: "Height 5 feet 4 inches; fair complexion; thin build; dark brown eyes; black hair; moles on right elbow-joint and back of left ear; oblong face."
What was Basu's "special habit"?
He "walks fast."
Next to the heading, "Peculiarities," there is a blank.
Only three individuals figure as his associates: Indrajit Gupta (CPI veteran and former Home Minister who died in 2001), Somnath Lahiri (only Communist member in the Constituent Assembly, died last year) and Bhabani Sen Gupta (writer and foreign policy analyst).
Sister Sudha Dutta is marked down as the only "relative."
Somnath Chatterjee hospitalised with chest infection
Kolkata: Former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee has been admitted to a private hospital in south Kolkata with chest infection.
"He is stable. And there is no immediate cause for concern," AMRI hospital Dhakuria medical superintendent Sumon Ghosh said.
The 80-year-old Chatterjee was admitted to a private cabin on late Saturday with fever, cough and cold under the treatment of chest specialist Subhasish Ghosh.
"He has been put on antibiotics. He is fully conscious," Ghosh said.
Chatterjee, a former parliamentarian of repute, presided over the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009.
He was expelled from the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in 2008 for presiding over a Lok Sabha trust vote in mid-2008 disregarding a diktat from the party to step down from the speaker's post after it withdrew outside support to the Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government over the Indo-US civil nuclear deal.

B. R. Alias Dada Idate
Shri Vamadev Shastri (David Frawley), an authority on Vedas, Director of the American Institute of Vedic Studies and an author of many famous books, during his sojourn in Mumbai, had delivered a lecture on 25th Dec. 1996 on his global vision of Hinduism in 21st Century. While he emphasized the need to put forth the Hindutva concept before the World forcefully and in an assertive manner by Hindu Scholars, Shri Idate who was a guest speaker on this occasion, spoke about the constructive work done by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh on a vast scale in spreading the message of Hindutva. The Hindu Vivek Kendra brings you the text of his speech.
If you need any information or have any reaction in this respect, please do write to us and we will forward your query to Shri Idate.
GLOBAL HINDUTVA IN 21ST CENTURY RSS USHERS THE HINDUTVA CONCEPT IN ALL WALKS OF LIFE
Text of Speech of Shri B. R. Idate
delivered on 25th Dec. 1996 at Mumbai :
Respected Shri David Frawley, Shri B. L. Vashta, Shri Ashok Chowgule, Shri Dilip Karambelkar, brothers and sisters,
We have just heard a talk by Shri Vamadev Shastri alias Dr Frawley on his vision of Global Hinduism in the 21st Century and discussions thereon. He is a highly learned scholar with deep study on many subjects including Hinduism, Vedas etc. My area of activity is restricted to Maharashtra and having this limitation in mind, I am going to put my thoughts before you.
I have been introduced to you as the 'Karyawah' of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. As you know, the aim of RSS is to unite all Hindus and this work is going continuously on since the last 70 years. This organization has mushroomed into many other institutions like the Bharatiya Janata Party, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Kisaan Sangh and mass organizations in nearly every sphere of activity. In the field of co-operative movement, it has established 'Sahakar Bharati', in Industry, it has 'Udyog Bharati' and in the field of arts 'Samskaar Bharati'.
Taking inspiration from the RSS, more than 40,000 to 50,000 small and large service-oriented projects have been launched all over the country. This all-encompassing spread of activity has brought the RSS to a position which can be rated as next only to the network of the Government machinery. The real moving spirit behind this vast national activity is the ideology of Hindutva based ultimately on the tenets of Hindu philosophy. It has been our firm faith that the only solution for all the ills not only of this country but of the whole of mankind lies rooted in the Hindu philosophy. This fact is being increasingly recognised ail over the world as a result of the pursuit of Hindutva by RSS throughout its journey of 70 years or more.
This belief in the ultimate victory of Hindu thought is based not on blind faith but on a deep inner awareness that Hindu philosophy is based on laws which are not just Hindu laws but universal laws applicable to all. This philosophy is called Hindu philosophy only because these laws were discovered by ancient Hindu sages. in reality, this philosophy is a Universal philosophy.
The man is composed of four elements : body, mind, intelligence and soul. Hindu philosophy seeks to bring about a balance of all these elements. Further, it asserts that every individual is a part of the universe and represents the cosmos in miniature in himself. An individual cannot be separated from his family, society, country, mankind and even the whole of creation itself.
The founder of the RSS, Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar had the exact idea about this intrinsic strength of Hindu philosophy. At the same time, observed that the Hindu society which had earlier produced this wonderful philosophy of oneness, was deeply divided within itself in many ways and had forgotten its identity. In order to bring this society back to life, this philosophy had to be re-awakened in the minds of Hindus. In this context, he emphasized two things. First, that we must put into practice our philosophy which was the best in the world. Without practice, it is meaningless. Secondly, it must be remembered that nobody accepts any philosophy because it is best. One has to back up this philosophy with a powerful force of the society. RSS is engaged in this dual task for the last 70 years.
About the problems of the Hindu Society, the founder of RSS had a clear vision that these problems belonged to all the sections of this society and could not be considered in isolation. It was necessary at that time to instill in the mind of every Hindu the awareness that Hindu Society with all its faults and virtues was HIS SOCIETY and his progress was inseparable from the Society's progress. In order to create this awareness, he set about the task of creating an organization of selfless workers dedicated solely to extending this philosophy to all spheres of national life.
For instance, the Marxist philosophy with its principle of class struggle was effectively countered by the principle of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" (the world is one family). The slogan 'Workers of the World Unite" was replaced by 'Workers Unite the World', and the concept of class conflict by the concept of class co-operation. The interest of workers and employers were perceived as complementary rather than mutually antagonistic and problems were sought to be solved through discussions than disputes. As a result of this approach, the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh today ranks as the largest apex trade organization in the country.
In politics, this Hindu philosophy was translated into the philosophy of 'Integral Humanism'. A living example of this approach is witnessed in the transformation of Gonda District of U.P. from a backward area into a world-acclaimed model of ideal implementation of this philosophy
Nothing illustrates this philosophy better than the fundamental change it has brought about in the approach to tribal problems which is a gigantic one. India's tribals were branded as Adivasis (aboriginals), the original inhabitants of this country who were pushed into the jungles by later waves of so-called Aryan invaders. The very name carried the seeds of conflicts. However, the RSS considers the tribals as Vanavasis (forest dwellers) on par with Gramvasis (villagers) and Nagarvasis (city dwellers) Hindus. As a result of this fraternal approach, today there are almost 4,000 service projects run in tribal areas by the RSS volunteers. Although initially, these projects were started by city-dwellers for their tribal brethren, the aim was not to make the tribals dependent on others, but make them self-sufficient. As a result, all these projects are now being run by hundreds of RSS volunteers who have arisen from the ranks of the tribals themselves. Shri Chintaman Vanaga who is now a Member of Parliament is an excellent example of this trend.
The extreme travails faced by the RSS volunteers in this endeavour are best illustrated by the fact that the very RSS centre at Talasari was attacked by Communist activists a few years ago. The head of this Centre, Shri Appa Joshi was severely wounded and was hospitalized where the doctors had to put more than 150 stitches to his head. Still he refused to leave the Centre and this magnificent sacrifice paid in creating a chain of dedicated workers from the Vanavasis themselves like Vanaga. Late Smt. Godavaritai Parulekar, a well known social worker and a legend in her life time with leftist leanings, once visited Shri Balasaheb Deshpande, the Founder-President of Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram who praised her work and expressed his admiration of the work she had done amongst the Vanavasis in Thane district. In her reply, she remarked, she had no doubt created an awareness of their rights and privileges and the spirit to fight against injustice, but she had failed to bring about any basic positive change in their lives, while Madhavrao Kane through his Vanavasi Kalyan Kendra hostel, school and constructive activities at Talasari was successful in this, and that she was a witness to an unbelievable change in the lives of the local Vanavasi youths.
Untouchability is the bane of Hindu Society and great people like Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, Veer Savarkar, Mahatma Gandhi, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and others have tried to eradicate it in their own special ways on many levels. However, the silent work done by the RSS in this respects has had much more far reaching effect. Hindus from all castes attend RSS shakhas, but nobody is ever asked his caste or given any different treatment. All are considered only Hindus. This approach is bringing about a silent revolution in the rural areas not only in inter-caste relations, but even affecting a fundamental change in the attitudes of hitherto depressed classes.
To narrate a personal example, I myself belong to a nomadic backward tribe in which drinking alcohol is common. Even I was offered a cup of alcohol by my own father when I was still in the primary school. However, the RSS training came to my help. I stoutly refused to drink and till this moment, I have not touched a drop of alcohol. This is a personal example but indicative of a overall change that is taking place among the tribals where RSS is active.
The RSS plan for the eradication of untouchability has three aspects. One is to spread the social awareness (Prabodhan), the second religious awareness of the basically non-Hindu nature of untouchability and third is of course the practical activities of the RSS which bring people of all castes together. The major breakthrough came when the second Sarsanghchalak Shri Golwalkar Guruji brought ail heads of the different sects of Hindus on one platform and all of them proclaimed with one voice that untouchability had no place in Hinduism. 'Na Hindu Patito Bhavet'. This resulted in unprecedented scenes all over the country where prominent sages like Jagatguru Shankaracharya visited Dalit areas and took food with them. Garlanding of Dr Ambedkar's statue at Nagpur by Shankaracharya himself cleared a number of misunderstandings in the minds of Dalits.
Realizing the fact that the Hindu philosophy which is the main source for this all-embracing movement is treasured in Sanskrit, RSS decided to make efforts of reviving this language not on scholarly studies but even in every day use also. Shri Krishnashastri is a Pracharak (full time honorary worker) of RSS totally dedicated to this job. Classes for speaking and writing Sanskrit have been conducted with tremendous success with the result that a number of villages are now using Sanskrit in their day-to-day life.
Another aspect of the silent change brought about by the RSS is the training and appointing of backward class or Dalit persons as priests in temples in increasing numbers even in areas dominated by orthodox elements. When such appointments were contested in the Court of Law, RSS people fought the case on the principle that every Hindu with the knowledge of performing the rites has a right to be a temple priest and got a favourable verdict of the Court. This practice of trained Hindus from all casts is now catching on.
Nomadic tribes (notified and de-notified) is such a neglected class of Hindu Society. The life of castes like Berad, Paradhi, Vaidu, Smashaaniogi is extremely miserable. The Society of Hindus which sees one God in all human beings and animals was not looking after these human beings. Volunteers of RSS are now working in this field also. In Maharashtra. in Tuljapur Taluka, one Hostel of Paradhi boys and girls is run by them. A project for rehabilitating 50 Pardhi families has been undertaken and the most heartening thing is that leaders for such work are now being moulded from their own community. Devkabai who used to run away at the sight of a policeman, is now talking to the Police with courage and conviction. Dhanaji Shinde, one illiterate activist said in a programme : 'We did not have any existence even that of a dust particle. But since Sangh workers have started working among us, we ourselves have realised our human values. 'When you start living the Hindu philosophy, you can bring about a outright change the life of society. A number of such examples can be cited.
RSS is today engaged in speeding up the Hindu philosophy in a number of such ways. This work has spread to all the corners of the country. Every such movement is waking up the potential strength of the society in its own way. Mankind is facing a gigantic challenge in the 21st Century. Problems like technological progress, insatiable hunger for consumption, depletion of natural resources, extinction of vital species, threat to economy will end anger the human life on this plant. Everybody is worried over this. Under these circumstances, it is necessary that a model of life following the Hindu Philosophy be presented to various countries. Sangh is working with all its strength and sources in preparing the Hindu Society for this purpose.
The RSS approach is to create, not to destroy. The RSS approach follows the footsteps of Adi Shankaracharya, Swami Vivekanand as well as hundreds of saints and sages right up the present century. Only when we build institutions will we see the progress, both, material and spiritual that is due to the people of this country. This can happen when the power of Dharma is fully exploded.
I would like to thank all of you for giving me this opportunity to you my mm on a subject which has been close to my heart.
Thank you.
