SHORT TERM AND LONG TERM PLANS BEING DRAWN UP TO REPAIR SUNDERBANS EMBANKMENTS - SHRI BANSAL

Both short term and long term plans are being drawn up to repair the 3500 km embankments in the Sunderbans in West Bengal damaged due to AILA. The Union Water Resources Minister Shri Pawan Kumar Bansal gave this information in Kolkata today. He was talking to newspersons after his meeting with the State Finance Minister Dr. Asim Dasgupta and the State Irrigation Minister, Shri Subhash Naskar. Shri Bansal said the share of total expenditure to be borne by the Central and State Government will be decided through consensus. A task force has also been formed in this regard. He said that the repair work would start in mid-November and the entire work under the short term and long term plans would be completed within three years. According to State Finance Minister, at the first phase repair work of 778 kms embankment would be undertaken. The senior officers of the Union Water Resources Ministry and the concerned departments of the State Government also attended today's meeting.
Shri Bansal, accompanied by the State Irrigation Minister, yesterday visited some AILA affected areas in South and North 24-Parganas.
