In opposition to the New Land Acquisition Bill
For Land Rights and Consent of Gram Sabha in Development Planning
21 August 2012 - Opening of Janmorcha at 11 am and Press Conference at 4 pm
The UPA government is set to introduce the revised version of the Bill to replace the Land Acquisition Act, 1894 titled as - Right to Fair Compensation, Resettlement, Rehabilitation & Transparency in Land Acquisition Bill, 2012, in the current Monsoon session of the Parliament. Though the new bill promises much more than the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2011 at the outset, a quick read shows otherwise. The Ministry of Rural Development has not only rejected many of the critical recommendations put forth by the Parliamentary Standing Committee but is seeking to get the Cabinet's nod for virtually the same bill, in a new guise.
It is in this context that SANGARSH is holding a Janmorcha at Jantar Mantar on 21-23August 2012. Over 5000 farmers, adivasis, dalits and other communities, whose lives are being impacted by the indiscriminate and blanket use of Land Acquisition Act 1894, will gather at Jantar Mantar to demand land rights, along with a progressive and comprehensive legislation to ensure that there is no forced acquisition of land and resources, including minerals and ground water.
The Janmorcha will bring together movements from across the country - Narmada Bachao Andolan (MP), Malva Bachao Andolan (MP), Kisan Sangarsh Samiti (UP & MP), National Forum of Forest People and Forest Workers (UP & Himachal), Ghatwar Adivasi Maha Sabha (Damodhar Valley, Jharkhand), Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao Andolan (Maharashtra), Adivasi Bhoomi Raksha Samiti (North Bengal) and others from Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa. The dharna over course of three days is expected to be joined by Shri Mani Shankar Aiyar, Shri Sharad Yadav, Shri Ali Anwar Ansari, Shri Tarun Mandal, Shri Prabodh Panda, Shri D Raja, Shri Manikrao Gavit and other Members of Parliament from different political parties. General (Retd) V.K. Singh and Retd. I.A.S Officer M.G. Devasahayam, Shri B D Sharma, Prof. Kamal Mitra Chenoy, Prof. K B Saxena, Prof. Anuradha Mitra Chenoy, Suhas Borker. Other eminent persons will also address the dharna on 21 August.
We request you to join us for this important gathering demanding legislation on land to undo the historic injustice meted to the disadvantaged people of the country.
