Sisir Adhikari pleads for increase in daily wages under MGNREGA in West Bengal

Public Information Campaign on Bharat Nirman begins at Dhatrigram

Dhatrigram, Burdwan, February 06, 2010.

Success of the welfare policies and programmes of the government depends on its effective, transparent and time-bound implementation. Union Minister of State for Rural Development Shri Sishir Adhikari  said this while inaugurating the five day Public Information Campaign on Bharat Nirman at Dhatrigram under Kalna Block-1 of Burdwan district today. He said that banking network in rural areas is being further strengthened. In all, 3000 new branches of the Nationalised Banks will be set up all over the country. Of these, West Bengal will have 282 branches. The Minister observed that the banks should be more liberal in extending financial assistance to the needy, particularly the rural poor.

Referring to MGNREGA the union minister said that the benefits under this scheme must reach the poorest of the poor, even in remote rural areas. Better quality of life has to be ensured for the tribal people. Total transparency has to be ensured while preparing the BPL list. In this context he said that West Bengal government has informed the centre that the new BPL list in the state will be prepared by June this year. Shri Adhikari pleaded for an increase in daily wages under MGNREGA in West Bengal. He also noted that the union government has laid particular emphasis on imparting vocational training to the unemployed youths in rural areas. The Minister   said that the Right to Information Act has given every citizen the right to know the details of activities of the Government.

Shri Swapan Debnath, MLA, Nadanghat, in his address at the inaugural function, lauded the role of Press Information Bureau and other media units of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry for organizing this sort of awareness programme at the grassroots level. He said that there is much scope for development so far as the handloom industry in Kalna subdivision is concerned.

In his welcome address Shri Santanu Palodhi, Addl Director General, Press Information Bureau, explained the objectives of the Public Information Campaign on Bharat Nirman. Among the other speakers were Ms Arundhati Sen, Adhyaksha, Burdwan Zila Parishad, Ms Arunima Dey, SDO, Kalna, Shri Santi Chal, Sabhapati, Kalna-1 Panchayat Samati, Kaushik Sirkar, local BDO and Debanjan Chakraborty, Addl Director General, DFP. Earlier on the day a huge rally was organised by the Directorate of Field Publicity to mark the beginning of the Campaign.

During the  five day Campaign, various components of Bharat Nirman like rural road connectivity, rural telecommunications, rural electrification, irrigation and rural housing and  the Flagship Programmes including  MGNREGA, National Rural Health Mission, Right to Information Act, PM's 15-Point Programme for Welfare of Minorities and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan will be highlighted, in all its details, through lectures, interactive sessions, photo & poster exhibitions  and performance of the artists of the Song and Drama Division.

As part of the Campaign DAVP has organised an impressive exhibition entitled "Resurgent India". DFP has also mounted an exhibition on Bharat Nirman. Besides, a number of Self Help Groups and several departments of the government have put up stalls showcasing their activities.
