Curfew in Tura over molestation

Curfew in Tura over molestation

Tura, June 21: Indefinite curfew was imposed in this town and night curfew in the entire West Garo Hills district following largescale violence over an alleged attempt by some labourers to molest a differently abled woman in a locality here.

Police had to resort to blank firing to disperse a mob of hundreds of people who surrounded the Tura Civil Hospital, where three of the accused were taken for medical examination.

The situation took a turn for the worse after the news spread and angry mobs went on the rampage, attacking shops and passers-by in several places here.

"We are trying to get things normalised," inspector-general of police (western range) H. Nongpluh told The Telegraph this evening.

Residents of Wadanang here, where the crime allegedly took place, claimed five labourers were involved. The public caught hold of three of them and gave them a sound thrashing before handing them over to the police.

The anger, however, started spreading and the mob swelled.

They demanded that the authorities should hand over the accused to them. By the time the police took the three accused to the Tura Civil Hospital for medical examination, the mob had arrived there, demanding action against the trio.

The police had to bring in reinforcements to contain the mob and reportedly resorted to blank firing to disperse them but to no avail.

At the time of filing this report, the body of a protester, reportedly killed in police firing, was lying near the civil hospital.
