SEMINAR ON SECURITY AND DEVELOPMENT OF ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS
Kolkata : September 4, 2009
Dr. A P J Kalam, former president of the India, today inaugurated a national seminar on Security and Development of the Andaman and Nicobar islands at Port Blair. The two-day seminar is being organised under the auspices of Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC), Ministry of Defence.
Inaugurating the seminar Dr. Kalam advised the Armed forces commanders present to "evolve an effective security plan for the archipelago. He said that only 36 of the 572 Islands are inhabited. The security plan to be evolved should ensure that there is no unauthorized occupation of the vacant Islands.
Vice Admiral Vijay Shankar, Commander in Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar command (ANC) said that the location of these Islands confers a geo- strategic advantage. Its economic and forest potential dictates a sound security presence. As India's Eastern most Bastion, the ANC is tasked with the responsibility of defence of A & N Islands, its airspace and waters. Raised as India's first Integrated Command, the ANC has a unique responsibility in consonance with India's "look east policy", he added.
