COMMISSIONING OF INS CORA DIVH AND INS CHERIYAM

Kolkata : September 10, 2009

Two Water Jet Propelled Fast Attack Craft (WJFACs), INS Cora Divh and INS Cheriyam, of the Indian Navy were commissioned by the West Bengal Governor Shri Gopal Krishna Gandhi in Kolkata today. Vice Admiral Anup Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command and Rear Admiral (Retd.) K. C. Sekhar, Chief Managing Director, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd., were also present on the occasion.

The ships are the 3rd and 4th of the series of 10 WJFACs designed and built by the GRSE. These ships are conceived, designed and built by the GRSE in Kolkata. The small yet highly manoeuvrable  craft are ideally suited for their intended deployment along the coast.

In the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008, Indian Navy has been assigned the overall responsibility of maritime security including coastal and off shore defence. A large number of initiatives were launched to this end, including augmenting the existing numbers and the technology of the Patrol Craft. The safe operability of the new WJFACs in shallow waters at high speeds and their day-night surveillance capability coupled with enhanced fire power is expected to give a tremendous boost to combating such asymmetric threats emanating from the sea and further enhance the coastal security.

INS Cheriyam will be commanded by Commander Sudip Malik and INS Cora Divh by Commander N. Hariharan. Both the ships are close to 50 metres in length and displacing 325 tonnes. They can achieve speeds in excess of 30 knots. The motto of INS Cheriyam is 'Fast, Focussed and Fearless' and that of INS Cora Divh is 'Always Alive, Ever Operational'.
