More than 464 crore rupees released by the Ministry of Minority Affairs to States under multi-Sectoral Development Programme for Minority Concentration Districts

 

New Delhi : September 18, 2009

 

The Ministry of Minority Affairs has released a total of Rs. 46,431.50 lakhs to the states for implementation of the Multi-Sectoral Development Programme (MsDP) for Minority Concentration Districts (MCDs) till 15th of this month. This Flagship Programme of the UPA Government is being implemented in 90 MCDs spread over 20 States/UTs. Of this the maximum amount of Rs. 18,057.61 lakh has been released to Uttar Pradesh followed by Rs. 10,622.31 lakh released to Assam and Rs. 5,152.36 released to Bihar. However, the total amount earmarked for these 3 states is: Rs. 1,01,570 lakhs; Rs. 70,350 lakhs and Rs. 52,320 lakhs repectively. The amount released to the States depends on the soundness of the District Plan submitted by the concerned State Government to the Ministry of Minority Affairs. As of now the Ministry has approved 70 District Plans for a total amount of Rs. 1,36,791.1 lakhs.

SARAS Mela begins tomorrow

 

New Delhi : September 18, 2009

 

A 16 day long SARAS Mela showcasing a rich tapestry of works from the rural artisans, craftsmen , self help groups and the beneficiaries of Swarna Jyanti Gram Swarojgar Yojana begins this Saturday (19th September,2009) at Dilli Haat Pitampura, New Delhi. The fair has been organized by the Ministry of Rural Development and Council for Advancement of People's Action and Rural Technology (CAPART). The fair will be on till 4th October. It will be inaugurated by Ms. Agatha Sangma, Minister of State for Rural Development.

 

The Mela aims at facilitating the SGSY beneficiaries, rural artisans, craftsmen and self help groups (SHGs) to exhibit and sell their products. It also provides them the opportunity for additional income as well as wide scale interactions and significant exposure. This exhibition-cum-sale under the brand name of SARAS will display a wide range of products manufactured by the rural artisans, craftsmen and beneficiaries of Self Help Groups from all over the country. It will create an unique platform for developing linkages between the buyers and sellers and also provides an opportunity to deal directly with the buyers.

 

Around 195 SHGs representing 22 States & different parts of the county are participating in this SARAS Mela at Dilli Haat Pitampura.

 

Some of the special attractions for this SARAS are Metal work products from Madhya Pradesh, Sambalpur Saris from Orissa, Wood-works from Tamil Nadu, Bamboo Craft from Tripura, Madhubani paintings from Bihar, Terracotta's from Chhattisgarh, Shawls & Carpets from Jammu & Kashmir and Kantha stitch work from West Bengal. Arrangements are also being made to set up attractive food stalls. Another major attraction of the mega event is the presentation of cultural programs of different States which will be held throughout the duration of the Mela.

Government Committed to Improving Funding for Health Research: Shri Azad

 

New Delhi : September 18, 2009

 

The Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad has emphasized the need for robust and vibrant public health research system for dealing with the challenges of public health in the country. Terming health research as the brain of health system, Shri Azad underlined the Government's commitment to promote health research by up scaling the infrastructure and providing a conducive environment for research. Speaking after giving away the ICMR awards here today, Shri Azad appreciated the efforts made by India Council of Medical Research and exhorted the scientist a do a lot more for the betterment of health of common man in our country. Detailing the various contributions of ICMR Shri Azad specifically mentioned the Council's work in the areas of tuberculosis, indigenous rotavirus vaccine, HIV vaccine against sub-type C. The two vaccines have completed phase I trials in India and there is promise of having a vaccine against this dreaded disease, the Health Minister said. Shri Azad also expressed happiness over the initiation setting up of a BSL 4 Facility in Pune which is the highest level of bio-safety lab in the world and will be the first of its kind in India.

 

Shri Azad also mentioned that ICMR should play an active role in realizing the potential of stem cell research and its technology in modern therapeutic and regenerative medicine. Although India remains totally opposed to reproductive cloning owing to the doubtful nature of its safety success utility and ethical acceptability, therapeutic cloning can be considered on case to case basis. "A 'Draft guidelines for Stem Cell Research/Regulation' on regulatory aspects of stem cell research and its applications prepared by ICMR will be very useful in this regard", Shri Azad added.

 

Speaking on the occasion Minister of State Shri Gandhiselvan said that in the wake of growing challenge of non-communicable disease ICMR faces new challenges which will require considerable up-gradation of its material and human resources.

 

Secretary, Health Research Dr. V.M. Katoch said that ICMR is committed to encourage science. The ICMR Awards represent the spirit of science. However, he lamented that there are some categories of research which do not attract many nominations. He said ICMR will continue to work to give its input in the public health policies and supporting the research initiatives and infrastructure in the country.
