| New Delhi, Jan. 4: The central Congress today cautioned chief minister Mamata Banerjee against "playing with people's emotions" by changing the name of Indira Bhavan. "Nazrul Islam was a very respected personality. But it is wrong to change the name of a building, monument or place which is involved with another great personality. Indiraji was the most revered leader. Our sentiments are attached to anything that is named after her," Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi said in a suo motu statement in Delhi. Asked if the response had been cleared by Sonia Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi, a senior AICC functionary said: "We don't need any clearance for fighting to protect the honour of Indira Gandhi. Mamata has herself been in the Congress and should understand the Nehru-Gandhi family will never appreciate such gestures." This is the first time the Congress central leadership has expressed disapproval on the issue from the official platform. In a throwback to street-shows, Mamata has announced a rally at the foot of the Gandhi statue on the Maidan on January 9 to protest the "Congress-CPM nexus". ( ) In Delhi, Alvi added that "the Congress did not have any enmity with her and small things can be sorted out between allies". The party's Bengal in-charge, Shakil Ahmed, asserted that the high command was fully behind the state unit but refused to describe it as a confrontation. "Our stand should not be viewed as a sign of confrontation. There is no fight with the Trinamul Congress. We are only raising a valid issue," Ahmed said. To a question about the participation of Manas Bhunia at today's agitation in Calcutta despite being in the state cabinet, Ahmed merely said: "A minister does not relinquish his right to speak on people's concerns." Till now, no cabinet minister at the Centre has joined a street protest on farmers' woes. Although Trinamul ministers have opposed certain decisions of the Union cabinet, they have never sat on a dharna to press their point. |
