RELATIVE DATA OF POVERTY LEVEL IN DIFFERENT STATES OF INDIA
The number and proportion of people living below poverty is reported in the following given Table. It is given that the targeted macroeconomic and sectoral projections of the rate of growth during the Tenth Plan are achieved, the poverty ratio in India is expected to decline to about 19.2 per cent in 2006-07 as compared to 36 per cent in 1993-94.
However, most of the poor would be concentrated in only a few States - Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and the North-Eastern States.
Some pockets of poverty will also remain in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
With the overall growth target of around 8 per cent accompanied by a high growth in agriculture in some of the States, the States of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Punjab, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu and Delhi, are likely to register negligible levels of poverty ratio. To take into account the migration factor from the relatively poorer States to these better-off states, the poverty level in some States has been kept at 2 per cent.
