Mussolini town bans memorabilia
Fascist souvenirs 'must not be visible'

(ANSA) - Predappio, April 15 - The hometown of Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini on Wednesday banned the display in shops of swastikas, cudgels and merchandise bearing Fascist mottos in an attempt to spruce up the town's image.

Currently, hundreds of tourists visiting the dictator's mausoleum in Predappio in Emilio-Romagna each year are able to browse Mussolini memorabilia that take pride of place in many shops.

But the town council has now unanimously approved 500-euro sanctions that will come into effect in a few weeks for shops caught displaying items harking back to the Fascist era in their windows or anywhere visible from the street.

''It was an essential decision that aims to give a clear message: an end to the culture of hatred that prevents the city of Predappio from presenting itself to visiting tourists with the right image,'' said local culture councillor Gianluca Barravecchia.

Souvenir hunters will still be able to browse memorabilia freely at one of several Predappio shops with Internet stores.

At one website, shoppers can pick up a 'Dux Mussolini' cudgel for five euros, a wide range of swastika-decorated daggers from 30 euros and a selection of beers bearing the faces of Fascist leaders for 2.6 euros each.

Born in Predappio in 1883, Mussolini led Italy from 1922 to 1943. Using his charisma, control of the media, and violence, he dismantled the country's democratic government system and created a Fascist state.

In 1940, he made the decision to enter the Second World War in alliance with Hitler. Three years later he was deposed and arrested.

With Nazi help, he set up a Fascist mini state, the Republic of Salo, at Lake Garda in northern Italy. As the Allies advanced he tried to flee to Switzerland but was captured and shot by Italian partisans in April 1945. His body was strung upside down in Milan with that of his mistress, Clara Petacci.

Dining with Mafia 'not evidence'
Court awards damages to contractor who attended Mob lunch

(ANSA) - Rome, April 15 - Dining with the Mafia is not evidence of a possible link to them, Italy's highest court ruled Wednesday.

A building contractor who took part in a Mob-organised luncheon on public works contracts should receive compensation for the time he spent in jail during a subsequent police investigation, the Cassation Court ruled.

In the ruling, which overturned a lower court's findings, the Cassation Court said attending Mob functions ''cannot in itself be considered serious evidence of a possible link to organised crime,'' as prosecutors argued in obtaining the contractor's preventive detention order.

The businessman was cleared by the police investigation and promptly filed suit for the 11 days he spent locked up.

FRANCE: CHILDREN MALNOURISHED FOR ISLAMIC PURIFICATION

FRANCE: CHILDREN MALNOURISHED FOR ISLAMIC PURIFICATION

(ANSAmed) - PARIS, APRIL 15 - It looked like something out of 'Les Miserables' by Victor Hugo. Eight French children were being denied food and care by their parents so that they could be 'purified', or at least that is what the father, a practising Muslim, told police authorities. The man, aged 49 of Moroccan descent, is now in jail along with his wife, a 50-year-old woman of Slavonic descent who converted to Islam. They were sleeping on the floor, the house lacked furniture and beds, they walked barefoot, starving, lived locked up at home devoid of outside contact, and were harshly caned whenever they broke a rule. Rules were set by their parents, who were jailed last Saturday in Perpignan, in southern France, after being charged with repeated violence and for having denied food and care to the point that their children's health was at risk. They told the police that they "rigorously followed the their religious precepts", which calls for "a very rigid diet". The couple stated that "slimming is the sign of a successful education for children which need purification" . Perpignan prosecutor Jean-Pierre Dreno explained that "the father believes that he is one of the enlightened and that the methods he imposed on his family go well beyond the rigorous practices of the Muslim religion, they are more reminiscent of the practices of a sect". Of the eight children, aged between 7 and 17, the thinnest, two girls aged 13 and 15 who weighed 22 kilos and a 13-year-old boy (1.65 metres tall and 32 kilos in weight), were admitted to hospital. They will all undergo medical and psychiatric examination. The older girls no longer went to school because of the ban on wearing the veil. The mother had signed them up for a distance learning course. France is now asking itself how this could have happened under the watch of school and social services who failed to notice anything. (ANSAmed).

EGYPT: HEZBOLLAH ARRESTS, IRAN SEES 'HIDDEN HANDS'

EGYPT: HEZBOLLAH ARRESTS, IRAN SEES 'HIDDEN HANDS'

(ANSAmed) - TEHERAN, APRIL 15 - Iran's Foreign minister, Manuchehr Mottaki, today stated that 'hidden hands'' belonging to Israel and to powers 'outside the region'' are responsible for dozens of arrests carried out in recent weeks by Egyptian security forces against alleged members of Shiite Hezbollah Lebanese militia who have been accused of planning terrorist attacks in Egypt. Quoted by Isna agency, Mottaki said that "hidden hands from outside the region and the policies of the Zionist regime are attempting to create problems for the upcoming parliamentary elections in Lebanon. But the Zionist regime will not meet its targets and this political conspiracy will not bear fruit". Today Iran's parliament approved a motion to condemn initiatives undertaken by Egyptian security forces and to support the head of Lebanon's Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, a close ally of Tehran defined as a 'courageous Arab leader'' and a 'sun which radiates light across the whole Islamic world''. [Awareness] The Great Recession: America Becomes Thrift Nation: Roma

Posted by: "Priya Ranjan" pranjan@gmail.com

Dear Friends:How are you doing? It seems like contemporary Roman empire has
gone in the favor of Goths and as history tells us, India is there to help.

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -
Bringing the historical context here..

Gibbon in his time wrote that pepper was "a favorite ingredient of the most
expensive Roman cookery." <http://goog_ 1239883975410>Alaric, king of the
Goths who besieged Rome in the early 5th century, demanded more than a ton
of pepper for ransom. <http://goog_ 1239883975410> So it was not the geese
that saved the Eternal City, but pepper…
"There was no year in which India [more correctly the Indies, including
Indonesia] did not drain the Roman empire of 50 million cesterces," iswrote
Pliny the Elder (A.D. 23-79) in anger in his 37-volume "Natural History."
There is nothing surprising about that. What did the Romans do that people
in Asia could not do, usually better (with the possible exception of art
that is alien to Asia, and red coral that was highly valued in India for its
magic qualities)?
------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -

Lets work together to build a better world for all and help the marginalized
and downtrodden.
Good day,
-priya

Sometimes we change because we want to: lose weight, go vegan, find God, get
sober. But sometimes we change because we have no choice, and since this
violates our manifest destiny to do as we please, it may take a while before
we notice that those are often the changes we need to make most. We ran a
good long road test of the premise that more is better: we built houses that
could hold all our stuff but were too big to heat; we bought cars that could
ferry a soccer team but were too big to park; we thought we were embracing
the simple life by squeezing in a yoga class between working and shopping
and took an extra job to pay for it all.

Five Reasons for Economic
Optimism<http://www.time. com/time/ specials/ packages/ article/0, 28804,1883384_ 1883403,00. html>

Now we're stripping down and starting over. A platoon of TIME reporters and
pollsters fanned out to every corner of the country to measure — anecdotally
and empirically — what's changed in the way we set our priorities and spend
our money since the Great Recession began. Most people think the pain will
be lasting and the effects permanent: only 12% expect economic recovery to
begin within six months, half believe it will be another year or two, and
14% believe we are at the start of a long-term decline. (See TIME's special
report on how Americans have adjusted to the
recession.<http://www.time. com/time/ specials/ packages/ article/0, 28804,1891475_ 1891477,00. html>
)

Our institutions watch for economic vital signs. But maybe, for individuals,
the sickness is what came before — the hallucination that debt would never
need to be repaid, that values only rise, that bubbles never burst. When the
markets collapsed, that fever broke. In our assumptions and attitudes and
expectations, the recovery is already well under way.

Talk to people not just about how they feel but about how they're living
now, and you hear more resolve than regret. Nearly half say their economic
status declined this year, and 57% now think the American Dream is harder to
achieve. And yet pain and promise are a package deal; even after all this,
fully 56% believe that America's best days are ahead. It would be nice if it
took something short of a heart attack to get us to work out, eat better and
spend more time with our kids. But in the end, where we wind up matters more
than how we got there.

Unlike any other downturn since the 1930s, this one has affected everyone,
either the fact of it or the fear of it. Even when prosperity returns, 61%
predict, they'll continue to spend less than they did before. Among people
earning less than $50,000 a year — roughly half of U.S. households — 34%
have not gone to the doctor because of the cost, 31% have been out of work
at some point, and 13% have been hungry. At the same time, 4 in 10 people
earning more than $100,000 say they are buying more store brands, 36% are
using coupons more, and 39% have postponed or canceled a vacation to save
money. Forty percent of people at all income levels say they feel anxious,
32% have trouble sleeping, and 20% are depressed. After a season of big
news, of war and storms and swindlers, pirates and poison peanut butter, 43%
are watching the news even more, taking the medicine even if it tastes bad
because skipping it could be risky. (See the worst business deals of
2008.<http://www.time. com/time/ specials/ 2008/top10/ article/0, 30583,1855948_ 1864555,00. html>
)

The calculus of life suddenly offers new equations. Insurance agents see
clients raising their deductibles to lower premiums, or skipping collision
coverage for older cars so that they bear more of the risks themselves.
Twenty-seven percent have raided their retirement or college savings to pay
the bills. Violent crime may not be up, but fear of it is: 40% of people say
that since the downturn began, they are more worried about their personal
safety. Gun sales<http://www.time. com/time/ nation/article/ 0,8599,1889886, 00.html>at
large retail stores have jumped 39% this year, according to the
SportsOneSource, a research firm that tracks the sporting-goods industry,
and shops are reporting ammunition shortages; they can't keep up with
demand.

For all the reflexive analogies, this is not the 1930s, when Babe Ruth took
a $10,000 salary cut (roughly what A-Rod earns per swing) and New York City
Mayor Jimmy Walker told theaters to show only cheery films. And yet we're
channeling our grandparents, who were taught, like a mantra, to use it up,
wear it out, make it do, do without. Now, if you can make it, you don't have
to buy it: just replace the lawn with a vegetable garden, eat your fill and
then store whatever is left. Sales of canning and freezing supplies rose 15%
during the first three months of the year compared with the same period last
year. Cough- and cold-remedy sales are down 9% because you can make your own
chicken soup; vitamin sales are up, maybe because you hope you won't need
to. Common sense is back in
style<http://www.time. com/time/ business/ article/0, 8599,1884149, 00.html>,
meaning we're less willing to buy what we can have for free: bottled-water
sales have dropped 10%. The 137-year-old Los Angeles public library system
set record highs in circulation and visitors. And film and camera sales have
plunged 33% this year, because who would want this winter in their album?

There's a natural longing to find the upside in the downturn. A
college-admissions officer, watching families reassess their means and ends,
suggests that maybe the insane competitiveness will recede. The yoga
instructor says living more simply relaxes us, as if the entire country
needs to slow its breathing. The buyer at the used-car lot feels both frugal
and green: that hatchback isn't used, it's "pre-owned," and this counts as
recycling. The discount shoppers view their task as a scavenger hunt and
take a certain pride in finding the bargain, cutting the deal; 23% of us are
haggling more, a profitable contact sport.

No one wishes for hardship. But as we pick through the economic rubble, we
may find that our riches have buried our treasures. Money does not buy
happiness; Scripture asserts this, research confirms it. Once you reach the
median level of income, roughly $50,000 a year, wealth and contentment go
their separate ways, and studies find that a millionaire is no more likely
to be happy than someone earning one-twentieth as much. Now a third of
people polled say they are spending more time with family and friends, and
nearly four times as many people say their relations with their kids have
gotten better during this crisis than say they have gotten worse.

A consumer culture invites us to want more than we can ever have; a culture
of thrift invites us to be grateful for whatever we can get. So we pass the
time by tending our gardens and patching our safety nets and debating
whether, years from now, this season will be remembered for what we lost, or
all that we found.

Israel, Palestine, and Gays

by Paul Varnell <http://staff/ show/124. html>

*Originally appeared August 28, 2002, in the Chicago Free Press.*

LET'S TAKE A QUIZ. No peeking at the answers directly below.

1. Which Middle Eastern country has no sodomy laws nor uses vague charges
such as "offenses against religion" or "immoral conduct" to prosecute and
imprison gays and lesbians?

2. Which Middle Eastern country has a variety of gay organizations which
safely conduct gay advocacy efforts?

3. Which Middle Eastern country has a gay and lesbian community center in
its capital city?

4. Which Middle Eastern country holds annual Gay Pride parades?

5. Which Middle Eastern country has members of parliament who actively
support and speak out on behalf of gays and lesbians?

6. In which Middle Eastern country did the head of state meet with gay
activists?

7. Which Middle Eastern country lets gays and lesbians join its military
services?

8. Which Middle Eastern country has broadcast programs about gays and
lesbians on its television stations?

9. And a bonus question: When gays in Palestine are forced to flee
persecution, what Middle Eastern country do they usually flee to?

Answers:

1. Israel
2. Israel
3. Israel
4. Israel
5. Israel
6. Israel
7. Israel
8. Israel
9. Israel

The contrasting treatment of gay men in neighboring Arab countries such as
Saudi Arabia and Egypt is well known: Gays are beheaded or sentenced to long
prison terms.

What seems less well known, however, is the appalling treatment of gays
under Yassir Arafat's Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Gaza. At
least it was less known until Yossi Klein Halevi wrote about it in the
August 19th *New Republic*. Palestine makes rural Texas look like San
Francisco.

According to Halevi, one young man discovered to be gay was forced by
Palestinian Authority police "to stand in sewage water up to his neck, his
head covered by a sack filled with feces, and then he was thrown into a dark
cell infested with insects." During one interrogation Palestinian police
stripped him and forced him to sit on a Coke bottle.

When he was released he fled to Israel. If he were forced to return to Gaza,
he said, "The police would kill me."

An American who foolishly moved into the West Bank to live with his
Palestinian lover said they told everyone they were just friends, but one
day they "found a letter under our door from the Islamic court. It listed
the five forms of death prescribed by Islam for homosexuality, including
stoning and burning. We fled to Israel that same day," he said.

The head of a Tel Aviv gay organization told Halevi, "The persecution of
gays in the Palestinian Authority doesn't just come from the families or the
Islamic groups, but from the P.A. itself."

Palestinian police have increasingly enforced Islamic religion law, he said:
"It's now impossible to be an open gay in the P.A." He recalled that one gay
man in the Palestinian police went to Israel for a short time. When he
returned to the West Bank, Palestinian Authority police confined him to a
pit without food or water until he died.

A 17-year-old gay youth recalled that he spent months in a Palestinian
Authority prison "where interrogators cut him with glass and poured toilet
cleaner into his wounds."

The U.S. State Department, which more and more seems to be living on some
other planet, blandly noted in a 2001 human rights report, "In the
Palestinian territories homosexuals generally are socially marginalized and
occasionally receive physical threats." That's one way to put it.

In the last few years, Halevi reports, hundreds of gay Palestinians, mostly
from the West Bank, have fled to Israel, usually to Tel Aviv, Israel's most
cosmopolitan city. Many are desperately poor, he says, "but at least they're
beyond the reach of their families and the P.A."

So it seems clear that Israel is the one country in the region in which gays
have legal rights as citizens and live in safety and freedom.

Oddly, however, some gays and lesbians over on the anti-capitalist
("progressive" ) left sympathize with Palestinian terrorists and support the
Palestinian Authority. One such fledgling group calls itself "Queers for
Palestine," another is named "Queers Undermining Israeli Terrorism" (as if
trying to stop terrorism against Israeli civilians is itself terrorism).

To be sure, no one should argue that gays and lesbians must support Israel
just because it is vastly more gay-friendly. They don't. They may feel that
some other political principles are more important than gay-friendliness.

But gays who support Palestine, and they seem almost entirely on the far
reaches of the political left, give the lie to the frequent demand made by
gays on the left that the rest of us must support some "progressive"
politician or position because it supposedly benefits gays, even though
doing so would compromise or violate some basic political principle we as
individuals may hold.

Keep "Queers for Palestine" in mind next time some gay left advocate says
that because you are gay you have to support some approved "gay" position.
And remember the pit, the

sewer water, the bag of feces and the toilet bowl cleaner.

Queers for Palestine?

by James Kirchick <http://staff/ show/98.html>

*First published in Advocate.com on January 28, 2009*

Of all the slogans chanted and displayed at anti-Israel rallies over the
past month, surely "Queers for Palestine" ranks as the most oxymoronic. It
is the motto of the San Franciscoâ€"based Queers Undermining Israeli Terrorism
(QUIT), a group advocating financial divestment from the Jewish State. QUIT
contends that Zionism is racism, regularly demonstrates at gay pride
marches, organizes with far-right Muslim organizations, and successfully
lobbied the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission to boycott
the 2006 World Pride Conference due to its location that year in Jerusalem.

What makes QUIT oxymoronic is that their affinity for Palestine isn't
reciprocated. There may be queers for Palestine, but Palestine certainly
isn't for queers, either in the livable or empathetic sense. Like all
Islamic polities, the Palestinian Authority systematically harasses gay
people. Under the cloak of rooting out Israeli "collaborators, " P.A.
officials extort, imprison, and torture gays. But Palestinian oppression of
homosexuality isn't merely a matter of state policy, it's one firmly rooted
in Palestinian society, where hatred of gays surpasses even that of Jews.
Last October, a gay Palestinian man with an Israeli lover petitioned
Israel's high court of justice for asylum, claiming that his family
threatened to kill him if he did not "reform." He's one of the few lucky
Palestinians to be able to challenge his plight.

And that"s only in the relatively benign West Bank. The Gaza Strip, which
has stagnated under the heel of Hamas"s Islamofascist rule since 2007, is an
even more dangerous place for gays, 'a minority of perverts and the mentally
and morally sick,' in the words of a senior Hamas leader. As in Iran,
Hamas"s patron and the chief sponsor of international terrorism, even the
mere suspicion of homosexuality will get one killed in Gaza, being hurled
from the roof of a tall building the method of choice.

It's these facts that make the notion of "Queers for Palestine" so bizarre.
Contrary to what some gay activists might have you believe, there really are
not that many political subjects where one's sexuality ought influence an
opinion. Aside from the obvious issues related to civic equality
(recognition of partnerships, open service in the military, etc.), how does
homosexuality imply a particular viewpoint on complicated matters like
Social Security Reform, health care policy, or the war in Iraq?
"What makes QUIT oxymoronic is that their affinity for Palestine isn't
reciprocated. There may be queers for Palestine, but Palestine certainly
isn't for queers, either in the livable or empathetic sense."

The answer, at least for some of those on the left side of the spectrum, is
one found in the early rhetoric of the Gay Liberation Front, the leading gay
rights organization to emerge after the Stonewall riots. The GLF was, in the
words of historian Paul Berman, the "gay wing of the revolutionary alliance"
that in the 1970s challenged the liberal consensus and came to be known as
the "New Left."

GLF leaders, for instance, played an instrumental role in the creation of
the Venceremos Brigade, which dispatched starry-eyed American radicals to
pick sugar cane in Cuba as a show of solidarity with the regime of Fidel
Castro. (Like the Palestinian Authority, Communist Cuba didn't exactly
return the kindness of its gay sympathizers; for decades it interned gays
and HIV-positive individuals in prison labor camps). The GLF allied itself
with a whole host of radical organizations (like the murderous Black
Panthers) whose role in the struggle for gay equality was tenuous at best.
And the very name of the GLF was adopted from the National Liberation Front,
the moniker of the Vietnamese Communists.

Why does this history matter now? Although you will find few out-and-out
Marxists in the leadership of gay organizations today, most gay activists
still view the world with the same sort of "oppression" complex epitomized
by the early radicals who led the GLF. They believe gay people to be
"oppressed," and hold that any other group claiming the same victim status
should earn the support of gays.

It's for this reason that every major gay organization was so hesitant to
talk about the overwhelming support among African-Americans to ban gay
marriage in California, and why the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force went
so far as to commission a bogus study ostensibly refuting that disturbing
statistic itself. In the estimation of the gay rights establishment,
African-Americans, like gays, are "oppressed," and there is no room for
enemies on the left.

But gays will never get anywhere as long as they view the world in this
constrictive and counterproductive way. Indeed, if one wanted to construe a
"gay" position on the Arab-Israeli conflict â€" that is, examine the issue
purely through the prism of the welfare of gay people â€" the inescapable
stance is nothing less than partiality for Israel. Israel, after all, is the
only state in the Middle East that legally enshrines the rights of gay
people. Gays serve openly in the military and occupy high-profile positions
in business and public life, and Tel Aviv is an international gay mecca. As
cliched as it may sound, Israel is an oasis of liberal tolerance in a
reactionary religious backwater, and if gay people want to stand with the
"oppressed" of the region, it is the Palestinians seeking a peaceful,
two-state solution, not the murderers of Hamas or their backers in Tehran,
who merit support.

None of this is to say that gay people are wrong for sympathizing with the
downtrodden and genuinely oppressed; on the contrary, it's an admirable
quality. But all too often, ideologues with ulterior motives and radical
agendas pervert this worthy instinct.

It's one thing to express concern about the humanitarian conditions in the
Palestinian territories. But to stand alongside the enthusiasts of religious
fascism isn't "progressive. " It's obscene.

http://gaymiddleeas t.blogspot. com/2006/ 08/sad-state- for-gay-palestin ians.html

Tuesday, August 01, 2006 A Sad State for Gay Palestinians A great
article by Brian Whitaker just appeared in the Jewish
Quarterly<http://www.jewishqu arterly.org/ article.asp? articleid= 218>.
It's well-documented, brings in other news sources, and is hard to dispute.
It points out how Israel is generally a great place for gay people, but not
for gay Palestinians. It documents how gay Palestinians are abused in
Israel, and abused worse in Palestine. Here's a good bit:

For gay Palestinians who feel persecuted at home, the obvious escape route
is to Israel, but because of the political conflict this can be fraught with
difficulties. As far as most Palestinians are concerned, fleeing into Israel
is a betrayal of their cause, while gay men who remain in the Palestinian
territories also come under suspicion.

‘In the West Bank and Gaza, it is common knowledge that if you are
homosexual you are necessarily a collaborator with Israel,’ said Shaul
Gonen, of the Israeli Society for the Protection of Personal Rights (‘“Death
Threat to Palestinian Gays’, BBC, 3 March 2003). Bassim Eid, of the
Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group, explained:

In the Arab mindset, a person who has committed a moral offence is often
assumed to be guilty of others, and it radiates out to the family and
community. As homosexuality is seen as a crime against nature, it is not
hard to link it to collaboration â€" a crime against nation (‘Palestinian Gay
Runaways Survive on Israeli Streets’, Reuters, 17 September 2003).

Regarding gay men as politically treacherous is not unique to the
Israeli-Palestinian situation. There are parallels here with Britain in the
1950s and 1960s, when gay men engaged in secret government work were treated
as a particular security risk. In the popular imagination, this may well
have been seen as an intrinsic part of their psychological make-up, although
the fact that their sexual activities were illegal did expose them to the
possibility of blackmail by Soviet agents.

Equating homosexuality with collaboration makes it extremely dangerous for
Palestinians to return home after fleeing to Israel. One man told Halevi in
the New Republic of a friend in the Palestinian police who ran away to Tel
Aviv but later went back to Nablus, where he was arrested and accused of
being a collaborator:

They put him in a pit. It was the fast of Ramadan, and they decided to make
him fast the whole month but without any break at night. They denied him
food and water until he died in that hole.

There is little doubt that some â€" though by no means all â€" gay Palestinians
are forced by their precarious existence to work for Israeli intelligence in
exchange for money or administrative favours such as the right of residence;
both Eid and Gonen said they knew of several. Others, meanwhile, are coerced
into undercover work for the Palestinian authorities; one 19-year-old
runaway stated in an interview with Israeli television that he had been
pressurized by the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade to become a suicide bomber in
order to ‘purge his moral guilt’, though he had refused (‘Palestinian Gay
Runaways’, Reuters, 17 September 2003).

Estimates of the number of gay Palestinians who have quietly â€" and usually
illegally â€" taken refuge in Israel range from 300 to 600. Although Israel is
a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention and recognizes same-sex
partnerships for immigration purposes, it does not welcome gay Palestinians
â€" mainly because of security fears. This often leaves them trapped in an
administrative no-man’s-land with little hope of finding a proper job and
constantly at risk of being arrested and deported. Some try to disguise
themselves by wearing fake military dog-tags and even Star of David
medallions.

‘The Palestinians say if you are gay, you must be a collaborator, while the
Israelis treat you as a security threat,’ Gonen told a news programme
(‘Palestinian Gays Flee to Israel’, BBC, 22 October 2003). But even if they
are neither collaborators nor a security threat, they can easily become
targets for exploitation by Israeli men. ‘They work as prostitutes, selling
their bodies unwillingly because they have to survive,’ Gonen said:

Sometimes the Israeli secret police try to recruit them, sometimes the
Palestinian police try to recruit them. In the end they find themselves
falling between all chairs. Nobody wants to help them, everybody wants to
use them.

The quote is from the end, which is definitely better than the beginning,
for in typical Whitaker style, the article jumps from topic to topic, often
throwing in details that distract from the flow of his articles. This
especially pertains to Britain. Whitaker can't resist mentioning Britain,
even when it's not very germane. Is it a remnant of imperialism, national
pride, or unrestrained blabbering? Who knows.

One thing I did notice: Whitaker mentions that the Israeli police try to
recruit gay Palestinians, but didn't go into it. I would have liked to know
more.

Perhaps post a link to the article on the gsa_lj livejournal community? If
you don't frame it carefully, you might wind up with a tedious flamewar on
your hands (some people do not handle complexity well, and the situation of
gay Palestinians does not easily boil down to anything that falls within
pro-Israel or pro-Palestine narratives), but I think this is precisely the
sort of thing that people would be interested in reading. Usually, when it's
reported on at all, it's usually some useless piece of pro-Israel
hagiography, or carping from moral equivalence types. This is neither, and I
think they'd like to read it.

Hello. I am not gay, but I ran into your blog from the Lebanese blog
aggregator ran by rampurple. I am an American, living in Northern
California, and it hurts me to think that there are entire communities out
there that force people into such an existence based solely on their
orientation. Over here, we do not differentiate between people based on
that, although in some American states they do. My heart goes out to people
who suffer this abuse for no reason other than their sexual orientation. By
the way, a person who was an example to me and a source of great support
when I needed it was a gay Palestinian guy who lives in my city.

Perhaps one day these people could find a community that neither favors nor
oppresses gay people, but merely lets them live their lives the way they
choose. California (at least the North) is such a community.

I will tell you more about recruiting gay men by the israeli police. as I am
a ay palestinian and I'm scared that if the israelis knew about my sexuaity
they will try to recruite me. well ide rather die than work for them.
basically they threaten you of telling everyone about your sexuality. and
you know how it is in arabic countries usually they wont b out to anyone,
and if they are itll b only close friends and probably parents. or theill
drug them take pornographic pictures of them and threaten them to make
posters of them and put them all around the city etc... so people have no
choice either work with them, or have everyone know about it not they you
wanted to happen, be shunned by the whole community losing your friends your
parents etc... and the israelis wont leave you. they will probably arrest a

"I do not want a crown, I do not want a throne. I only want to rub my
forehead in the dust and dance with abandon over the earth. If the Sultan
would show me favour, then I might be allowed to dance even upon the
winds... Because those who denounce me are not real men in the spiritual
sense, they cannot accept love with all its consequences in their hearts. Oh
my love, there a thousand snares in every form; oh my love, one who is not a
real man can never experience true love!"
*-Sufi mystic Akhi Jamshed Rajgiri defending himself before the Sultan of
Juanpur*

"He who claims that he experiences no desire when looking at beautiful boys
or youths is a liar, and if we could believe him he would be an animal, and
not a human being."
*-Hanbalite jurist Ibn Al-Jawzi*

"His mouth graced the cup with his spittle before it met mine,
And the blush of his cheek dimmed a little the red of the wine..."
*-sung by an old scholar of his tutee in an Arabian folktale*

"He showed himself in shirt of white,
With eyes and eyelids languor-digit.
Quoth I, 'Doss pass and greet me not?
Though were thy greeting a delight?
Blest He who clothed in rose thy cheeks,
Creates what wills He by His might!'
Quoth he, 'Leave prate, for sure my Lord
Of works is wondrous infinite:
My garment's like my face and luck;
All three are white on white on white.'"
*-Abu Nuwas about a beauteous youth in 1001 Nights*

*To a beautiful youth on pilgrimage to Mecca*

You who have left to visit the ancient House,
And abandoned me here, hostage to sadness;
One last visit before departing,
Would not that have been better?

You go on pilgrimage to follow the precepts,
But that doesn't at all keep you
From putting a Moslem to death!
May I be your ransom! Rather than wander
The roads of the pilgrim,
Better you should spare Allah's creatures.

The 'Palestinian' Oppression by 'Palestinians'

Oppression, Oppression, you will stump into "Palestinian" virus propaganda,
that's guaranteed.

One of the best tools/slogans, the "Palestinians" have introduced into their
Goliath propaganda machine and into their cult of "self made victimhood".

As yourself if you call any curfew in Iraq (2003 - 2007) to curb the Shiite
Muslim on Sunni Muslims massacres and bloodshed & vice versa, or in any part
of the world that security of the population is at risk, as "oppression" .

But you will never hear anyone in the mainstream take on the real oppressive
siege by the 'Palestinians' on Israelis via their terrorism or the
oppression of 'Palestinians' by 'Palestinians' .

* Their heinous street justice, where animalistic lynching is a normal
thing.

* The notorious use of their kids as human bombs, as human shields and
indoctrinating them into hatred and glorifying mass murder, the worse form
of child buse in the world, hence: (not just) Palestinian adults' oppression
of their kids.

* Oppressing women, no wonder Honor killing is in 'Palestine' one of the
worse in the world.

* Oppressing Christians even before Hamas took office. Well, the very same
reason "oppression" is used on Israel's self defense measures, is the exact
same reason why none of the users will talk on the real oppressors, the
'Palestinians' .

Christian Horror Stories Highlight 'Medieval' Palestinian Persecution

*As Islamist extremism grows, Christian existence in Palestinian territory

WASHINGTON â€" As Islamist extremism grows, Christian existence in Palestinian
territory is disappearing at an alarming rate, emphasized a distinguished
scholar and international human rights lawyer.

During a discussion last week about the preservation of the 2,000-year-old
Palestinian Christian community, Dr. Justus Weiner, a Scholar in Residence
at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, shared horrifying stories of
Christians being persecuted and tortured by Palestinian authorities.

He noted that the population in Bethlehem during the 1940s was estimated to
be about 75-80 percent Christian, but now that number has dropped to about
12 percent.

Moreover, the overall Christian population of the whole West Bank has
decline to about 1.5-1.7 percent of the total population â€" or “practically
at the point of disappearing, Weiner said during the talk at the public
policy think tank Hudson Institute on Tuesday.

“Nobody denies this, he added. “People play with the numbers a little bit,
but no one denies this (the drastic decline of Palestinian Christian
population).

Christians flee the territory mostly due to social instability, lack of
economic opportunities, and religious discrimination - but some even face
gruesome torture simply because of their faith in Jesus Christ.

Weiner, one of the world’s leading experts on the situation of Palestinian
Christians, told of several real-life cases of torture he has examined
during his nine years of research on the status of Arab Christians in the
West Bank in Gaza.

His first story was about an Armenian Christian jewelry store owner from
Jerusalem who was on a business trip to Gaza. The Palestinian police ordered
him to turn over half of his gold and money and then subsequently beat him
for six hours. After the beating the man still refused to give the police
his gold and was beaten for another two hours in the police station. In the
end, the Christian man’s watch, rings, half of his gold jewelry and $6,000
were taken from him before he was released.

In another case, a Muslim who converted to Christianity was arrested by the
Palestinian authorities on fabricated charges and imprisoned for 21 months â€"
of which seven months he was held in solitary underground confinement.

The man in a written testimony recalled he was beaten with sticks, stripped
naked and forced to sit on bottles and on the legs of chairs which were
turned upside down.

Weiner is working to secure asylum for this man in Norway where he will join
his brother â€" also a Christian convert whom Weiner has helped.

The most severe case presented by Weiner involved an Arab Christian convert
who was confined to a tiny cell and regularly left for days without food.
During interrogation, he was often tortured by the PA officers who put out
cigarettes on his back.

Weiner, who interviewed this man in his office, said he saw first-hand
cigarette-burn scars on the man’s back.

Moreover, strips of sheet metal were held with tongs in hot fire and touched
to the skin of the Christian convert’s buttocks and his Achilles tendon
where the heat melted through the back of his feet.

The man had provided Weiner photographs of his injuries when it was still
fresh as well as hospital documents.

“His injuries are the kind you read in medieval books. It is hard to
describe, commented Weiner.

The Christian convert had only begun giving out books on Christianity and
speaking to Muslims about his newfound faith when the PA immediately cracked
down on him.

During his imprisonment, the convert was promised by the police that he
would be freed and given a senior position in the PA with a big office if he
reverted back to Islam. He refused, however, and on Jan. 21, 2004 was shot
dead by masked men.

“I dedicated my book to this courageous man who continued to practice the
religion of his choice even in the face of constant harassment and death
threats, said Weiner, pointing out that his murderers have not been brought
to justice.

Weiner’s talk came just a month after Hamas forcefully took over the Gaza
Strip, where it is feared that Christians will suffer even more under the
Islamic fundamentalist group as well as the lack of law and order following
the military coup.

“It is my hope that if these human rights issues are publicized, that there
will be more international pressure on the Fatah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad,
concluded Weiner.

“Religious tolerance is a fundamental human right for all people in every
part of the world, he said.

“This should be understood as the beginning of everything.

Tea Parties, Passover and Pharaoh Obama's Police
State<http://feedproxy. google.com/ %7Er/YidWithLid/ %7E3/9Of3J_ aimcA/tea- parties-passover -and-pharaoh- obamas.html>

Posted: 14 Apr 2009 11:09 PM PDT
At first it made me angry, according to Jewish Law non-Jews are not supposed
to attend Passover Seders and the President was hosting one. Then it became
a Joke, "Do you know that when President Obama became the first President to
host a Seder, it also was the first time that Pharaoh hosted a Seder?"

Today is Tax Day, Tea Party day as well as the 7th day of Passover the day
Jews celebrate our final break with the Pharaoh's Oppression by crossing
through the Reed Sea (not a typo, the Torah calls it Yam Suf, which means
sea of reeds).

Allow me to suggest that the Image of President Obama as Pharaoh, and the
Tea Parties that will take place throughout the country later today on the
anniversary of the Israelites' throwing off the yoke of oppression are
inextricably linked.

Each day it becomes clearer that our government is ignoring the Constitution
of the United States of America and even worse they are ignoring the reason
for the constitution:

*"The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the
people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government."
Patrick Henry *

The Government's addiction to spending and over-taxation that will be
protested across the United States today is merely a symptom. The real
problem is that we our elected leaders, are becoming oppressors not
representatives, government is encroaching on every part of our lives
instead of clearing the way for us to live our lives in peace and with equal
opportunity. While this all started years ago, the present Democratic
Party-lead government has taken it to new heights.

Our President blames the previous administration for overspending, this is
true, but he has doubled the deficit of his predecessor. Something not
discussed often because the formerly free press has simply become a
propaganda arm of the current ruling party.

Like some Orwellian nightmare, the President and his party have made up the
tale that the entire blame for the present recession should be on the heads
of the opposition party, while many in his party fought regulation of the
housing market.

Those who dare to have contrary opinions run the risk of being silenced. Our
President, and other senior members of his administration, has personally
attacked those in the media who have disagreed with him. And according to
some reports, his Chief of Staff, an ABC Reporter and a full political team
have a conference call each morning to determine who to attack next. What is
most frightening is rather than listen to the reasons, people are protesting
today, our Government, and the media they control, mock us. This is not the
America I know.

*“The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions
that I wish it to be always kept alive. Thomas Jefferson
*

Our department of Homeland Security is now warning police departments to
keep an eye on our Heroes who come home from war, lest they be unduly
influenced by right wing nuts; defined as people who disagree with the
President.

The President is looking to seal his rise to power by having the Census
Bureau count those who are not in the country illegally, which will result
in congressional seats being move to areas that favor his party. To seal the
deal he is looking to grant amnesty to those who broke the law to come to
this country.

We must protest against the taxes and the spending while recognizing that we
must also resist the growing control over our lives. We used to fight
terrorists, now we fight our own corporations. The President of the United
States is firing executives. The Treasury secretary is setting peoples
salaries. Obama is also determining product lines, not based on the market
place but on the whims of politics. The President of the United States is
looking to artificially raise the cost of energy with cap and trade, while
ignoring our own resources.

Soon the President will be pushing through his health plan and just like
Pharaoh he will determine who lives and who dies, whose life-saving medical
treatment is too expensive, who is too old to warrant being saved.

Yes America, today we protest, taxes and spending, but this must not be the
end. Just like the Hebrews did at the Reed Sea, we must make this the
beginning. We must keep up the fight to retain our liberty, lest soon we may
not be allowed to fight at all. Please email me at yidwithlid@aol. com to be

Pirates Attack Another US
Ship<http://feedproxy. google.com/ %7Er/YidWithLid/ %7E3/UDZ9w- 6Ioew/pirates- attack-another- us-ship.html>

Here we go again. Remember last week's hijacking attempt they were repelled
first. Now the are firing Rockets at the Liberty Sun a US Cargo ship on its
way to Kenya. The Pirates believe that despite the Easter Sunday rescue of
Captain Phillips, President Obama does not have the resolve to do what it
needs to end Somali piracy. Based on the initial few weeks of the Obama
Presidency, the Pirates may be right. But the ONLY way to insure that
America has freedom of the seas is to send the "U.S.S DONT F**K WITH
AMERICA" To Somalia. Details about the new attack below:

*Pirates attack U.S. cargo ship but fail to get
aboard<http://cnn.site. printthis. clickability. com/pt/cpt? action=cpt& title=Pirates+ attack+U. * Crewman e-mails, "We are under attack by pirates, we are being hit by
rockets"*
*
*
*
*
*(CNN) -- The Liberty Sun, a U.S.-flagged cargo ship bound for Mombasa,
Kenya, was attacked Tuesday by Somali pirates, according to a NATO source
with direct knowledge of the matter.*
*
*
*"The pirates fired rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons at the
vessel, which sustained damage," said a statement from New York-based
Liberty Maritime Corporation, which owns the vessel.*
*
*
*The ship was carrying U.S. food aid for African nations, the statement
said.*
*
*
*The pirates never made it onto the ship and the vessel is now being
escorted by a coalition ship, still bound for Mombasa, officials said.*
*
*
*Katy Urbik of Wheaton, Illinois, said her son, Thomas, was aboard the
Liberty Sun at the time of the attack. She shared the e-mails he sent as the
ship came under fire.*
*
*
*"We are under attack by pirates, we are being hit by rockets. Also
bullets," said one e-mail sent Tuesday afternoon. "We are barricaded in the
engine room and so far no one is hurt. [A] rocket penetrated the bulkhead
but the hole is small. Small fire, too, but put out.*
*
*
*"Navy is on the way and helos and ships are coming. I'll try to send you
another message soon. [G]ot to go now. I love you mom and dad and all my
brothers and family."*
*
*
*About 1½ hours later, Thomas Urbik sent another e-mail to his mother, which
said, "The navy has showed up in full force and we are now under military
escort ... all is well. I love you all and thank you for the prayers."*
*
*
*Earlier Tuesday, pirates off the coast of Somalia seized two freighters,
proving they remain a force to contend with just days after the U.S. Navy
dramatically rescued an American captain held by other pirates.*
*
*
*First, pirates in the Gulf of Aden on Tuesday hijacked the MV Irene EM, a
35,000-ton Greek-owned bulk carrier, according to a NATO spokesman and the
European Union's Maritime Security Center.*
*
*
*The crew of the Greek carrier was thought to be unhurt and ships have been
warned to stay clear of the area for fear of further attack, the Security
Center said.*
*
*
*Later Tuesday, pirates on four skiffs seized the 5,000-ton MV Sea Horse, a
Lebanese-owned and Togo-flagged vessel, said Cmdr. Chris Davies of NATO's
Maritime Component Command Headquarters in Northwood, England.*
*
*
*Details about the ship and its crew weren't immediately available.*
*
*
*NATO has an ongoing anti-piracy mission off Somalia called Operation Allied
Protector. The mission involves four ships covering more than a million
square miles, Davies said.*
*
*
*A U.S.-led international naval task force, Combined Task Force-151, is also
patrolling in the region.*
*
*
*Tuesday's hijackings came two days after sharpshooters from the U.S. Navy
SEALs killed three pirates who had been holding U.S. Captain Richard
Phillips hostage on the water for days.*
*
*
*Phillips had offered himself as a hostage when pirates attacked his vessel,
the Maersk Alabama, on Wednesday, officials said. The ship had been on its
way to deliver an aid shipment to Mombasa,

*
*
*The pirates set off with Phillips on one of the Alabama's covered
fiberglass lifeboats. They then drifted about 300 miles off Somalia as the
U.S. Navy sent ships to the region.*
*
*
*After a five-day high seas standoff, and with negotiations faltering, Navy
snipers managed to kill each of the three pirates on the lifeboat with a
single bullet to the head, a senior defense official told CNN.*
*
*
*The fourth pirate had been aboard the USS Bainbridge when the shootings
occurred and was taken into custody. Watch the tough tactics the Navy
uses »<http://cnn.site. printthis. clickability. com/pt/cpt? action=cpt& title=Pirates+ attack+U. *
*Federal prosecutors will now determine whether that pirate will be
prosecuted in the United States, Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd
said.*
*
*
*The 20 crew members of the Maersk Alabama, who remained free during their
captain's ordeal, are already in Mombasa awaiting a reunion with Phillips.
They are relaxing at a beach resort in the coastal city under the watchful
eyes of the Kenyan military while the Bainbridge takes Phillips to meet
them, a U.S. military spokesman said.*
*
*
*Maersk, the company that owns their vessel, announced Tuesday that Phillips
and the crew will return Wednesday to the United States aboard a chartered
flight from Mombasa.*
*
*
*They are to land at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, where they are to be
reunited with loved ones in a private reception area.*
*
*
*The two freighters seized Tuesday are the third and fourth vessels hijacked
in two days off the Somali coast.*
*
*
*Pirates <http://topics. cnn.com/topics/ Pirates> on Monday hijacked two
Egyptian fishing boats carrying a total of between 18 and 24 people, the
Egyptian Information Ministry told CNN.*
*
*
*The Egyptian Foreign Ministry is working to end the hijacking, the ministry
said.*
*
*
*Egyptian boats are known to use Somali waters illegally for fishing, taking
advantage of the lawless state of the country and the lack of enforcement of
its maritime boundaries.*
*
*
*Those who have tracked pirate activity in
Somalia<http://topics. cnn.com/topics/ Somalia>say it started in the
1980s, when the pirates claimed they were trying to
stop the rampant illegal fishing and dumping that continues to this day off
the Somali coast.*
*
*
*Piracy accelerated after the fall of the Somali government in the early
1990s and began to flourish after shipping companies started paying ransoms.
Those payments started out being in the tens of thousands of dollars and
have since climbed into the millions.*
*
*
*Some experts say companies are simply making the problem worse by paying
the pirates.*

John Murtha to FBI--> I Fart in Your General

Congressman John Murtha, the King of Congressional Pork Really knows how to
"put it" to the FBI. A few months ago, the FBI raided the offices of the PMA
group, founded by a Murtha aide, and one of the Pork King's favorite
Lobbying firm. What they found out is that Murtha and his buddies at PMA
Group operated their own little Earmark Factory. A recent
report<http://yidwithlid. blogspot. com/2009/ 03/feds-closing- in-on-john- murtha.html>,
the FBI may be zeroing in on the relationship between Murtha and PMA.

Despite the FBI putting the Heat on Murtha and his PMA relationship, the
Porkmeister is is still accepting money from PMA clients and still getting
them earmarks:

*Murtha draws donations from PMA clients
<http://thehill. com/leading- the-news/ murtha-draws- donations- from-pma- clients-2009- 04-14.html>
By Mike Soraghan
The FBI raiding a high-profile defense lobbying shop hasn’t stopped the
powerful Pennsylvania Democrat from dealing with its former clients. He’s
seeking earmarks for them and accepting campaign contributions from them.

Murtha, who chairs the Appropriations Defense subcommittee, on Tuesday
reported receiving contributions from three former PMA clients for whom he
requested earmarks in the pending appropriations bills. The contributions
all came on the same day during the earmark vetting process.

PMA, run by former appropriations staffer Paul Magliocchetti, disintegrated
earlier this year after the FBI raided the group’s Virginia headquarters.
PMA specialized in lobbying for defense companies, and many of its clients
were located in and around Murtha’s district. Since 2002, PMA Group and its
clients have raised a total of about $1.7 million for Murtha, and Murtha
obtained millions in earmarks for its clients.

None of the companies or Murtha is known to be under investigation. The
three former PMA clients who contributed have sizable operations in Murtha's
district. Murtha has often emphasized the local connections of the defense
firms for which he has requested earmarks.

A spokesman for Murtha said the the majority of the companies are from
Murtha’s district and deliver “quality capabilities in naval torpedo
defense, next generation precision airdrop, and counter-IED technologies to
the Defense Department."

"If I'm corrupt, it's because I take care of my district," Murtha recently
told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

It is legal for those seeking earmarks to give contributions to the members
who can grant them. Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), though, has repeatedly sought
to pass legislation in the House calling for an internal investigation of
the relationship between PMA campaign contributions and earmarks.

Campaign watchdogs say the contributions highlight the problems in allowing
lawmakers to take money from people they can benefit financially.

"It raises questions about whether those earmarks are awarded because of
good policy or as a reward," said Meredith McGehee of the Campaign Legal
Center. "It undermines confidence in government."

Murtha's campaign finance report, filed Tuesday, shows that Murtha got
$5,000 from the political action committee of Advanced Acoustic Concepts
Inc.; $2,400 from Terry Collins, president and chairman of Argon ST; and
$1,400 from Alan J. Friedman, president and CEO of Planning Systems Inc.

Murtha is requesting $5 million for Advanced Acoustic Concepts for submarine
navigation decision aids. The veteran lawmaker is asking for $8 million for
Argon ST, to upgrade naval torpedo defense capabilities. For Planning
Systems, Murtha is requesting $2.3 million for next-generation
precision-airdrop capabilities.

Murtha also got contributions from two other former PMA clients, General
Dynamics and MobilVox Inc., seeking earmarks through another congressional
office.

He also got contributions from executives of KDH Defense Systems and Trident
Systems. He has sought earmarks for the two companies, though they're not
PMA clients.

Murtha’s campaign filed the donations from each of the companies on March 4,
the Wednesday after a large Friday-night fundraising event for Murtha at the
Army-Navy Club in Arlington, Va.

Murtha holds at least two large fundraisers a year, one in early spring.
Defense contractors and their lobbyists attend in force.

Advanced Acoustic Concepts and Argon ST are now represented by Flagship
Government Relations â€" a firm founded by former PMA lobbyists, which has
signed at least 11 of PMA's former clients.

Another company with strong ties to both Murtha and PMA, Concurrent
Technologies, also recently migrated to Flagship. Murtha was instrumental in
Concurrent’s foundation. Concurrent officials made donations to Murtha this
year, but Murtha did not make any earmark requests for the company this
year. The company has been under the Pentagon inspector general’s scrutiny;
its tax-exempt status came under congressional criticism several years go.
Concurrent officials said that they are planning to reduce and eventually
eliminate all earmarks directed to the company by Murtha.

Melissa Koloszar, a former PMA lobbyist and former chief of staff to Rep.
Jim Moran (D-Va.), is the only former PMA lobbyist to donate to Murtha in
the last quarter. She now is in the government relations office of MKG
Consulting. None of the other former PMA lobbyists who now have their own
lobbying outfits, such as Flagship, have yet donated to Murtha.

A notable absence from the donors’ list is Kuchera Industries, which also
has run into its own FBI problems. But Jim Ervin, the head of Ervin
Technical Associates â€" which represents Kuchera â€" donated $1,400 in March.

In Middle East Reporting--> NAIVETE KILLS

By Barry Rubin

It never ceases to amaze me that people who know nothing about the Middle
East, in this case Roger Cohen but many other names come to mind, can
suddenly proclaim themselves experts and make the most elementary errors
involving the lives of other people. It also never ceases to amaze me that
people can visit a country, especially a dictatorship, be wined and dined,
handed a line and believe it so thoroughly that their mind is closed ever
after.

Recently, I met a young man who helped me understand this phenomenon better.
He worked on Afghanistan and took exception to my saying that there was no
way that Western intervention was going to make that a stable and moderate
country. It was too geographically diverse, bound by traditional culture,
beset by conflict, and economically underdeveloped to achieve that
condition. And no matter how much money was poured in to train its army to
be efficient or to finance its government to be honest and effective, the
situation would not change drastically.

He responded with some heat that after the Soviet withdrawal that the
Communist government Moscow had established lasted three years, proving how
good the Afghan army could be. That argument surprised me sinceâ€"like so many
I hear nowadaysâ€"it was so easy to refute, indeed containing within itself
its own refutation.

My response was simple: so, in effect, what you are saying is that if the
Western forces are withdrawn then the Taliban will take over within three
years. In short, this is precisely the kind of thing I was saying.

I think that the mainstream view of the Middle East is so reinforced by its
hegemony in the discussion, so underpinned by cultural and ideological
assumption (which it isn’t even aware of making) that one often hears such
weak or, in other cases, factually inaccurate statements. The idea of free
debate is to test and correct our views. Yet when there is such hegemony in
academia andâ€"to a lesser extentâ€"the mass media , for one viewpoint that set
of arguments is weakened simply because it dismisses all challenges without
even considering them.

Later that day, I had a chance to talk further with this young man, who was
very sincere and dedicated to his studies. He had spent a lot of time in
Afghanistan. And it quickly became clear what that meant. He argued
passionately that the West must overthrow the current government and install
others who, he said, were honest and would provide the country with a great
government.

Upon further discussion, it turns out that these were powerful people from
wealthy families who had courted him. They had invited him to their palatial
homes, wined and dined him, and flattered him. “You understand our country,
they had said in admiring terms. In some cases, though not this one, aside
from access and flattery, career promotion opportunities and money are also
offered.

One might speculateâ€"this is just a thoughtâ€"that women are used to being
courted and have learned how to discount flattery to a greater extent. Men,
however, are probably especially prone to such appeals as they are used to
colder treatment by their fellows.

At any rate, we see this constantly. One young scholar, given unprecedented
access to write the biography of a ruthless dictator, gushes at how
wonderful he is. Roger Cohen of the New York Times, goes to Iran, they treat
him well and thus he deduces that the mullahs have only benign intentions.
Robert Leiken, totally ignorant about the region and formally succumbing to
similar treatment by the Nicaraguan Contras, meets the Muslim Brotherhood
andâ€"with no knowledge of what they write in Arabicâ€"believes everything they
tell him and describes them as moderate. I also think such a process went on
when Iraqi exiles assured American interlocutors that Iraq was just waiting
for America to liberate it, that all would go smoothly, they would then take
power and be moderate and stable democratic friends ever after.

As I write these words, I see an article in the Los Angeles Times that
provides a terrific example of this phenomenon* about David Lesch, a man
with no real knowledge of the region who was chosen to be the biographer of
Syrian dictator Bashar al-Asad. Lesch hero-worships the dictator who, in a
real sense, made his career.

“He is very low-key, he is a very amiable, very humble individual, not
intimidating at all," Lesch says.

He admits that he wouldn’t get tough with Bashar: “It would do damage to
this access, which will be far worse than bringing it up." And he talks more
like a fan for a rock star than a serious analyst of regional politics: “He
values my opinions and ideas. How pitiful, how easily deceived. Yet in
dealing with Iran and Hamas, Hizballah and Syria, Muslim Brotherhoods and
assorted other dictators and anti-democratic movements or states, how often
this happens.

This article is positively embarrassing and the fact that Lesch, the
article’s author, and the Los Angeles
Times<http://www.latimes. com/news/ nationworld/ world/la- fg-syria- scholar14- 2009apr14, 0,1440821. story>don’t
see this is an important sign of how seriously mainstream journalism
and academic Middle East studies have gone off the rails.
But to return to my subject here. Why is the gap between reality and
perception so much wider on the Middle East than on other subjects or areas
of the world? It would take a book to give a proper answer but here are some
admittedly too-brief and incomplete talking points:

1. High level of partisanship, making even the simplest statements of fact
controversial at times.

2. Indoctrination on campuses to an extraordinary extent.

3. Since so much is written about the regionâ€"often bad material--people
think they know everything, a mistake less likely to occur in more “obscure
places.

4. The need for special knowledge to understand the region which should
notâ€"but isâ€"often lightly disregarded.

5. A complex historical picture which people may ignore since history is not
deemed to be important.

6. The importance of cultural differences in understanding the region at a
time when, according to PC, everyone is supposed to be seen as being exactly
the same. A letter by Iranian-American academic in the New York Times this
week asserts that it’s ridiculous to claim Iranian regime nuclear weapons
are threat because Iranian mothers want good lives for their children and
living standards have gone up.

7. The importance of ideology which is discounted as an influence creating
totally different world views, at least among regimes. (See point 6, above).

8. Precisely because the threat from the region and in it is so high there
is a tendency either to claim no threat exists or that it can be easily
defused through understanding and concessions.

9. The hysteria about alleged Islamophobia and misuse of the concept of
racism which makes it somewhere between hard and impossible to have a
serious discussion of these issues.

10. Failure to understand the difference between what's said in English or
in Arabic and Persian, discounting the latter as of no importance

People have a right to be foolish and naïve. But they have no right to
misdirect national policies and riskâ€"or costâ€"the lives of hundreds and
possibly damage the lives of millions on the basis of their own stupidity.

(Due to the final days of Pesach\Passover, this will be the final blog
update until Thursday night. No new posts will appear until then and no new
comments will be moderated)

We've just concluded the drama of the showdown between the Navy Seals and
the Somali pirates, despite that the lead story in the news has somehow been
Obama's dog, reminding us that we're living in a country dominated by a
media churning out a constant tide of "Beloved Leader" stories regardless of
what else is going on in the world. And when the polls on the "Beloved
Leader" don't go their way, they just massage the numbers
enough<http://www.newsmax. com/politics/ cbs_obama_ poll/2009/ 04/13/202526. html>so
that they can proclaim that Hussein is more popular than ever.

“Mr. Obama's overall approval rating, meanwhile, has hit a new high of 66
percent, up from 64 percent last month. His disapproval rating stands at 24
percent boasted a press release from either CBS News or the Obama campaign,
which is a difference without distinction.

In other words it appears The New York Times and CBS “News cooked the poll
numbers until they produced enough people who agreed with the opinions of
their reporters about Obama.

Caddell says: “the original raw sample already showed a partisan difference
of 8.5 percent but “when weighting or ‘adjusting’ the numbers the partisan
gap went over 16 points. In effect what they did was reduce the Republicans
in the sample by 13 percent and increased the number of Democrats by 12
percent. Particularly strange was the number of Independent voters was only
changed 2 percent.

Caddell accuses the Times and CBS of being guilty of either one of two
things: “It is either terrible methodology or the Bernie Madoff school of
polling. Small demographic adjustments are ordinary, but these extremes are
unprecedented.

Meanwhile the media continues concealing the religion of the pirates... but
now and then it slips through. Along with the Islamic value system behind
the <http://www.jihadwat ch.org/archives/ 025681.php> pirates' actions. And
their view of human life. Particularly non-Muslim life.

Sometime Thursday, a desperate Phillips jumped from the lifeboat in an
attempt to swim to the USS Bainbridge, only to be hauled back on board after
the pirates opened fire. From then on, Phillips was tied up.

One pirate radioed the Navy destroyer and demanded to know how far they were
from the sanctuary of Somalia's coast.

"Very far," came the reply from the Bainbridge.

"Thank you," the pirate negotiator responded, according to a U.S. military
timeline, his politeness masking menace. "If we cannot [reach the] Somali
coast, we will kill the infidel."...

Not the hostage. Not the prisoner. Not even the American. The infidel.
Kufar. A man whose life under Islamic law belongs to his captors, who may be
seized and held for ransom. Unlike a fellow Muslim.

All the while Obama continues rolling the appeasement caravan through the
desert. A close look at his Grand Tour seems to show that his chief priority
is not any kind of American agenda, let alone a war on terrorism, heaven
forfend, but protecting and promoting Islam.

On the heels of bowing to the Saudi king, pressuring NATO into giving
Turkish Generals top positions, forcing the Danish Prime minister to
apologize for his country's free speech, playing up to Iran and urging the
EU to welcome in the Turkish hordes... Obama just keeps going and going.

In Athens, the topic was what else... but Muslim
rights<http://www.grreport er.info/statiaen .php?mysid= 1914&t=30& SESID=kpdc3schf0 77otflgc8vrlt1b1>
.

The US President Barack Obama asked from Athens to recognize the Muslim
minority in Greek Thrace. This is what he said on his 10 minute meeting with
the Ecumenical Patriarch Vartolomei in Istanbul. The patriarch asked the US
president to open the Theological school in Halki and Barack Obama said that
this will happen only if Athens undertakes analogical steps regarding the
Muslim minority in Thrace.

According to information from the Greek media, the American President told
Vartolomei that just the way that the Theological school in Halki teaches
orthodox priests in a Muslim country, Greece needs to have schools, which
will teach Muslims and other religions. Barack Obama also supported the
Muslim appeal from North Greece to choose their own Mufti and not for it to
be given to them by the

Now this isn't even simply a question of civil rights. Creating an
independent Islamic religious framework in Turkey means giving the Saudis
free range to set up their own radical mosques and preachers that will
naturally promote Jihad.

That's why European nations including France have been backing away from an
independent Islamic infrastructure. Meanwhile Obama is bullying Greece into
giving Islamic extremism a foothold in its own country.

Sure Barry Hussein's a Christian. As much as I'm a Buddhist. Had the
Islamists picked America's policies, they'd be exactly Obama's policies. And
just to pile some more sickles and stars on the cake... the US will be
providing UAV's<http://www.jpost. com/servlet/ Satellite? cid=123971069371 7&pagename= JPost%2FJPArticl e%2FShowFull>to
Lebanon.

The pretext is to strengthen Lebanon's army, but the practical use of such
aircraft would not do anything to strengthen the military domestically, but
would provide equalization in a third conflict with Israel.

.

This is entirely plausible, as under the table the Obama admin promised
Jewish leaders that if they kept their mouths shut on the US rejoining the
Islamic charade of a UN Human Rights Council, Durban II would be a no go.
Now unsurprisingly they're likely to find out that you can't trust a liar,
and that both Durban II and the UNHRC are a go.

Senior U.S. officials in Washington and New York are leaning in favor of
participating in the "Durban 2" UN-sponsored anti-racism conference
scheduled to take place on April 20 in Geneva, diplomatic sources said on
Sunday.

The diplomats, who share a close working relationship with the American
delegation to the United Nations, informed leading Jewish officials in New
York that Washington has increasingly become convinced of the need to
dispatch representatives to the conference.

This is all part of the same card game, dealing from the bottom of the deck,
and stringing along Jewish groups hoping for some sign of pity or fair
dealing, only to wind up cheated and lied to again and again.

The Struggle for America's Soul - a Nation of Laws or a People of Pop

When Benjamin Franklin was asked at the close of the 1787 Constitutional
Convention, "*What have we gotâ€"a Republic or a Monarchy?*â€, the learned
gentleman answered both wisely and cynically, “*A Republic, if you can keep
it.*

Can *we* keep it? That's the question at the heart of the great struggle for
America's soul. Are we a nation of laws or a people of pop culture?

<http://4.bp. blogspot. com/_mveHL3n_ 4ME/SeP6jI8abiI/ AAAAAAAABq0/ T6jvJDYTVZY/ s1600-h/Scene_ at_the_Signing_ of_the_Constitut ion_of_the_ United_States. jpg>
The 2008 Presidential election saw a race between an American war hero with
decades of political experience and a man with virtually no political
experience and no talent besides posing for photographs. The larger struggle
that took place was between America as a nation of laws and the mass media
and the internet distilling everything into digital entertainment. And
America lost.

When Tony Blair ushered in the New Britain, the Cool Britain, the one
detached from its many centuries of wars and history, in favor of one
defined by screaming pop stars and brazen tabloid covers-- he did to
England, what Obama's backers would do to America. It was not America that
crowned Obama, but the New America, without standards, without laws and with
no values beyond bread and circuses.

A republic if you can keep it. Rome couldn't. In the years ahead, it will
become finally clear whether there will be a United States of America that
derives from the laws and values of over two centuries of history-- or
Obama's New America, a conglomeration of design skills, reality tv shows,
iPod commercials, magazine covers and celebrity hysteria. Not a nation of
laws, not even an empire, but a decaying bewildered collapsing oligarchy,
where gawkers hawk merchandise with the great leader's photo, where bribery
and graft control everything-- and where the biggest employer is the
government and the only other employers worth mentioning are overseas
companies.

Call it Putin's America. Call it Obama's America.

The panic, the chaos, the devaluation, the defeatism, the depression and the
dumbing down of America all serves a purpose-- to make certain that we can't
keep the Republic. To make certain that there isn't even a Republic left to
keep.

America, the original Ownership Society, is swiftly becoming the Owned
Society. The Ownership Society meant that Americans were one of the few
citizenries that actually government themselves, because they owned their
country. The Owned Society by contrast rolls everything together into one
massive bureaucratic pyramid that owns everything and controls everyone,
from cradle to grave.

The way to turn one into the other is through disempowerment and
devaluation. And by causing people to forget that they are owners, by
promising them that life as slaves will be so much easier for them. Why
bother working hard when your new bureaucratic masters promise to take care
of you instead? Universal health care, unlimited immigration, universal
laws, universal everything. Come for the free chains, stay for the 16 hour
ditch digging in the volunteer community corps.

Finally and most of all, a Republic is based on reason. So reason must be
shouted down with crude slogans, with emotionalism, with biased narratives
and memes... and through recreating language itself into a Newspeak mockery
that no longer has any objective meaning.

Promise the impossible, speak in grand terms and wait for the applause.
Propose what can reasonably be done and let your proposal be debated. That
is the difference between the monarch and the President of a Republic. It
takes men and women of reason in an ownership society to conduct business in
a Republic. But any mob with any figurehead can march around, shout, wave
banners and thrill to the demagougery of an egomaniac with a microphone.
That is how most of the world is run.

America has been dumbed down, through the public miseducation system,
through multiculturalism, through second language immigration, through
racial grievance mongering, through the lowest common denominator of
entertainment- - all leading to a society eager to give up its rights and
freedoms in exchange for a chance to gather in a mob and cheer hoarsely
while they're promised a new Golden Age just around the corner.

The Constitutional Convention was the product of a citizenry willing to work
for a Republic. The 2008 Presidential election was the work of shills and
salesmen playing to a public that no longer understands any of the values or
agendas of 1787. Instead a poverty of the intellect and the spirit holds
sway disguised by splashy design schemes and carefully orchestrated
marketing programs.

The American Experiment was not built on catering to the rule of an ignorant
and greedy mob. It was built on the rights and responsibilities of American
citizens as individuals. Mob rule negates the Republic, the Constitution and
America itself. As Lincoln himself said, a nation cannot survive half-slave
and half-free.

<http://2.bp. blogspot. com/_mveHL3n_ 4ME/SeP6kzR9jZI/ AAAAAAAABq8/ cJbiKM3kh8E/ s1600-h/10719. jpg>Today
America is half-slave and half-free and the balance is tilting toward
slavery. The slavery is not quite as dramatic, but it is every bit as real,
in the political, moral, economic, intellectual and spiritual sense. The
nation is half enslaved to a state of enforced mindlessness and ignorance.

The Civil War came about because America could not survive as a free nation
if it was half-slave. A society where rule is in the hands of the citizenry
cannot exist as a free nation if it is half slave, given time it will become
a slave empire, ruled by a handful over the groans and whimpers of the many.
The Free Power that the Union Armies fought for, was to be the power of Free
Men in industry and politics... over the power of slavery.

Today we once again face that struggle, to submit to slavery, to a nation of
slaves chained to a vast government bureaucracy, lashed by endless media
propaganda and driven to cheer their own enslavement. Or to reject slavery
and to choose freedom.

The Constitutional Convention was the work of men who would not be slaves,
it was the heritage of Patrick Henry's warning of the chains that had been
forged by a monarchy for the binding of free men, it was that same Republic
which Franklin understood could only be kept by free men.

And so the New America of Obama must fail to swallow and forever destroy the
United States of America, a nation ruled by laws, a Constitutional Republic
in which rights and freedoms are vested in the individual.

Sahnoun Daifallah

A jobless Algerian who sprayed his own faeces over food and wine in two
Gloucester supermarkets was jailed for nine years yesterday.

Sahnoun Daifallah, 42, was branded a serious risk to the public after he
spread the disgusting substance from a weed killer container concealed
inside a laptop bag.

He caused more than £700,000 damage by targeting Tesco in Quedgeley and
Morrisons in Abbeydale as well as Waterstone's book shop in Cirencester and
the Air Balloon pub at Birdlip.

Daifallah was found guilty of four counts of contaminating goods –
including food, wine and 706 books – during a two-day rampage in
Gloucestershire in May last year.

Bristol Crown Court heard how Daifallah had fantasies about biological
weapons and wanting to cause public alarm. He was also found guilty of
having an offensive weapon – a catapult with marbles.

When police searched his house in Bibury Road, White City, they found
stockpiles of the mixture and plans to spread the muck in other cities,
including Bristol and Birmingham.

They also found messages scrawled over the walls referring to biological
weapons, smuggling uranium into Britain and micro-organisms being spread.

One of the messages read: "The ants get out to every direction to get food,
then they bring it back to Tesco and Asda.

"If you poison those then you kill the ants."

Sentencing him at Bristol Crown Court yesterday, Judge Carol Hagen described
Daifallah as "high risk" to the public.

She said: "Your actions were callous, caused considerable alarm to those who
were present and led to substantial police involvement.

"You have decided to represent yourself and – in spite of the overwhelming
evidence against you – you have shown no remorse, which is hardly
surprising considering you have refused to admit guilt.

"I have found you arrogant and argumentative in your thinking and the
pre-sentence review states you are a considered a very high risk to the
public."

She added she had wanted to jail him indefinitely but the law would not
allow her to.

During a seven-day trial which began in February this year, the court heard
how Daifallah first visited the Air Balloon pub on May 14 where he harassed
a barmaid.

Staff at the pub called the police – but when officers arrived, Daifallah
was no longer there however he had contaminated the toilets with his foul
stench.

He then moved on to Waterstone's bookstore in Cirencester, where he sprayed
his brown substance all over a toilet in the coffee shop.

Staff noticed the smell but it was not until after he had left the store
they discovered an area of 38 shelves, from the classics to the children's
section, had been doused in the foul substance. contaminating 706 books.

Two days later, Daifallah visited the Tesco store in Quedgeley, where a
shopper saw him reach into his bag and produce a jet of brown fluid over the
frozen chips.

He moved on to the wine section where a member of staff saw a fine vapour
come out of his bag and onto the wine, leaving the brown substance over the
shelves.

Not satisfied with his vandalism he then drove four miles to the Morrisons
store in Abbeydale, where an employee in the wine section noticed him acting
strangely and gagged at the overpowering stench of his ammo.

Both supermarkets were cordoned off and shoppers were locked in for public
safety reasons while the source of the contaminant was traced.

The stores were closed for two days while stock had to be thrown away and
shelves cleaned costing in excess of £700,000.

The former chemist was found guilty of four counts of contaminating goods
and handed sentences of three years, five years and two terms of nine years
to serve concurrently.

- Steve,

I think you have to think about the propensity of this individual to
perform such acts rather than the actual act itself.

What i'm saying is he has shown no remorse or plea of guilt and is quite
clearly so mentally imbalaced as to not think twice about committing a
similar, if not worse, crime again.

- Fod'r, I was just about to say the same thing.
Nine years and possibility of deportation for what is in effect criminal
damage (presumably he was in good health, so no danger of causing
widespread dangerous infection - he just cost his victims collectively
£700,000 and caused a bit of work for the police) but seriously injure or
kill someone and it's just a slap on the wrist.

- This guy gets basically the same sentence as the three people who held
a person hostage in a shed (ultimately leading to his death).

Something's not right with one or other of these sentences.

custodial or supervision order. It is a shame that a lot of other crimes are
not getting the kind of sentences that are deserved! Dangerous man locked

Balochistan is Burning, Where is CJ Iftikhar Chaudhri?

No, no Mr. Raza,

Please try to understand. Its job of Pak Army and ISI to kill Foreign Agents.

There's nobody more patriotic than ISI and Pak Army. They are only killing US, Zionist and Indian Agents in Baluchistan like they have 5 times before. They are defending us against those Foreign Agents just like they had defended us by against 56% of our population, who were Bengalis and had became Indian Agents in 1971. They had been killing Indian Agents like Communists, Socialists, G.M. Syed's Sindhis, Sorkh Posh of Baacha Khan-Wali Khan, Urdu Speaking Mohajirs etc.

You see, all Non Punjabis of Pakistan are basically Traitors and they keep becoming Indian Agents one after another. What can our poor patriotic Pak Army and ISI do besides keep killing them or keep killing them through patriotic Taliban?

*  Sorkh Posh of NWF Province and Northern Territories were Indian Agents and Enemies of Pakistan so, Pakistan had to make them a part of Pakistan as soon as it was founded.
*  Then, Baloch had turned Indian Agents and Enemies of Pakistan so, Baluchistan had to be conquered in 1949 to make it become a part of Pakistan.
*  Independent State of Bahawalpur had to be usurped and made a part of Pakistani Punjab because its people were about to become Indian Agents and Enemies of Pakistan.
*  Part of Baluchistan (Gwadur) used to be a part of Oman and country of Oman had become an Indian Agent so Gen. Ayub had to conquer that.
*  The British had given Mr. Jinnah only East Bengal, Sindh and Punjab minus Bahwalpur and other areas later added on so, 73% of Pakistanis were Bengalis on August 14, 1947 and all of them had turned Indian Agents in 1971. Had they not?
*   14 Independent States west of India were usurped by Pakistan just like India had usurped dozens of States east of West Pakistan.
*  Pakistan's usurping of Indepdent State Thishad made 73% of Mr. Jinnah's Pakistan's Bengali population become only 56% of population in 1971.
*  You see, they became Bangladeshis and now they don't have Pak Army to defend them and all of them have become Slaves of Indians working in houses of Indians as Servants and Maids. Have they not? So, thank Pak Army that you can still breath air free in Pakistan.
*  Sons and daughters of Urdu Speaking Founders of Pakistan in Urban Sindh had also become Indian Agents and had to be killed by thousands in 1990's.
*  But the Balochis are the worst because Punjabistan had to conquer Baluchistan 5 times.
*  Only Baluchistan is not burning, Afghanistan, Malakund and Banur Divisions of Pakistan are also burning because Pak Army is defending us against Enemies of Pakistan.

Pakistan Army ZinDaabaaD ...!

Dear Paul Stramberg,
United Nations,
Geneva

PAKISTAN: Three Baloch political leaders are found murdered after daylight abduction

Name of victims:
1. Mr. Ghulam Mohammad, 45, Chairman of the Baloch National Movement
2. Mr. Sher Mohammad Baloch, 35, Vice President of Balochistan Republican Party
3. Mr. Lala Munir Baloch, 50, General Secretary of the Baloch National Front
Date of the Incident: 3 April, 2009

Dear I am writting to you this with a hope that yesterday we all made collective efforts for the UNHCR official Mr. John Soleiky, and today me and my Baloch Nation needs your and your Organisation (UNO) and UNHCR support.

Baloch Nation needs a real working relationship with UNO to combat this barbaric genocide of Baloch Nation and specifically of Baloch legends by the Pakistani Islamofascist Army and Intelligence Organization.

I and my Baloch Nation is shocked and disturbed to hear of the abduction and murder of three political activists in Balochistan, allegedly by military or paramilitary forces. I am also concerned at the way the efforts of the men’s lawyers and friends were hampered by police and the judiciary, and by the lack of effort made to rescue of the men. I hear that the local police force is currently illegally pressuring Baloch civilians not to protest the murders in public.

According to those dealing with the case, Mr. Ghulam Mohammad, 45, Chairman of the Baloch National Movement, Mr. Sher Mohammad Baloch, 35, Vice President of Balochistan Republican Party and Mr. Lala Munir Baloch, 50, General Secretary of Baloch National Front, had attended a Session Court in Turbat district, Balochistan province on 3 April to arrange interim bail, relating to charges in shooting and bomblast cases last year. After being granted bail the men were accompanied by their lawyer, Mr. Kachkol Ali to his chamber at around noon.. Ali is a former opposition leader in the Balochistan assembly. According to the lawyer, more than a dozen persons in civilian dress then entered the office, ransacked it and abducted the men, driving away in four vehicles which bore no registration numbers. The attackers refused to identify themselves, or to tell Ali where his clients were being taken.

Ali immediately filed an application at the Turbat Police Station accusing military intelligence (M.I.) and Inter services Intelligence (I.S.I) persons of the abduction. The application mentioned his fear that the men would be tortured and killed by the military. However police refused to file a first information report (FIR), the basic document for police investigation; they said that they would consult their superiors in the police force.

Kachkol Ali then filed an application of Habeas Corpus for the three activists under section 491 CRPC. However the Judge of the Turbat session court, Mr. Pazeer Ahmed Baloch, refused to accept it, claiming it did not come under his jurisdiction, and told them to file in the Balochistan High Court. The lawyers, which included Mr. Fida Hussain, the president of Turbat Bar Association, then sent an application for Sou Moto to Mr Iftekhar Choudhry, the chief justice of Pakistan’s Supreme Court.

According to the lawyers, the three men’s bodies were found five days later on 8 April in Pidrak, 35 km from the place of arrest. They were almost unrecognizable due to the chemically-aided decomposition, but medical officers have concluded that the men were killed on the day of their arrest, and possibly thrown from a high place, such as a helicopter.

According to sources Chief Justice Balochistan Sanaullah Yaseen of the Balochistan High Court has just taken the case, suo moto. I call on you to support this motion by launching an immediate investigation into the murder of these three men, and the violation of their rights to life, to arbitrary detention and to free speech. The failure of the men’s lawyers and friend’s to solicit help from the police or the legal system shows a malfunction in the complaint-receiving mechanism in Turbat district, Balochistan province, which must be immediately addressed. The difficulties experienced by the lawyers, and the political activism of the victims also points to a government-sponsore d abduction and murder, which must be given serious attention. In order to safeguard the political freedom and right to safety of those in Balochistan, the collusion between the police and illegal operations by military agencies in Balochistan warrants very close and
public scrutiny.

Yours sincerely,
Munir Mengal

France seeks to stop forced marriage, mutilation

France seeks to stop forced marriage, mutilation

By LAURENCE JOAN-GRANGE, Associated Press Writer Laurence Joan-grange, Associated Press Writer - Tue Apr 14, 9:24 am ET
PARIS - France's government launched a campaign Tuesday against forced marriages and genital mutilation, seeking to protect women from practices that quietly thrive in immigrant communities the nation is struggling to integrate.

The government is handing out 100,000 leaflets to schools, doctors and other public services explaining the health and legal risks and providing information on support services for victims.

The campaign involves two stark, red, white and black brochures. One pictures a razor - a tool often used in genital mutilation - in a circle with a slash through it. The other shows a splayed palm, a ring of barbed wire being slid over the ring finger, also circled with a slash running through it.

France is among several European countries that have sought to stamp out such customs. French law forbids forced marriages and allows prosecution of anyone who mutilates the genitals of a girl with French citizenship or resident status, even if the operation is conducted in another country.

But the practices continue to thrive in secret. The French information campaign appears aimed at getting the word out to immigrants that such acts are not acceptable here.

"A barbaric, anachronistic and unjustifiable plague," was how the government's junior minister for women's and other social issues, Valerie Letard, described the practices.

Around 55,000 women and girls in France have been genitally mutilated, and about 70,000 women and girls in France are "under threat" of being forced into marriage, she said.

Families must be told "that the law will punish them severely if they take such paths," Letard said.

"Today we must break the silence, do away with all these received ideas about customs or religion," she said, referring to mistaken beliefs that genital mutilation is prescribed by Islam, for example.

Genital mutilation, an ancient rite in more than two dozen African countries and parts of the Middle East, usually targets the clitoris and parts of the labia, and is usually conducted on prepubescent girls.

The practice spreads across religions, and reasons for it vary from purity to tradition. Three million girls worldwide face the ordeal each year, and health risks from infection to sterility continue for life.

Immigrant families in Europe sometimes send their daughters back to their country of origin during the summer holidays to have the procedure done.

France has grappled in recent years with how best to integrate a growing number of immigrants and cultures with values that often jar against more liberal French customs.

French marriages must be validated by administrative officials, who can refuse if they suspect either of the spouses was forced into the union. Marriages of French people conducted abroad can be annulled if one of the spouses is found to have been forced into it.

'HELL ON EARTH'  German Bishop Links Nazi Crimes to Atheism

'HELL ON EARTH'
German Bishop Links Nazi Crimes to Atheism
By Markus Becker

In an Easter sermon that has drawn widespread criticism, the Catholic bishop of Augsburg has linked the crimes committed under Nazi and Communist regimes to atheism. Atheist groups have reacted with fury and accuse the cleric of rewriting history.

A Catholic German bishop has come under fire for his remarks condemning atheists. In a sermon given on Easter Sunday, the bishop of Augsburg, Walter Mixa, warned of rising atheism in Germany. "Wherever God is denied or fought against, there people and their dignity will soon be denied and held in disregard," he said in the sermon. He also said that "a society without God is hell on earth" and quoted the Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky: "If God does not exist, everything is permitted."

DDP
Bishop Walter Mixa: "A society without God is hell on earth."

Most controversially, he linked the Nazi and Communist crimes to atheism. "In the last century, the godless regimes of Nazism and Communism, with their penal camps, their secret police and their mass murder, proved in a terrible way the inhumanity of atheism in practice." Christians and the Church were always the subject of "special persecution" under these systems, he said.

However, critics accuse Mixa of rewriting history. The bishop's claim that humanity automatically arises from religious faith is "totally untenable," Rudolf Ladwig, president of the Germany-based International League of Non-Religious and Atheists (IBKA), told SPIEGEL ONLINE. Mixa's words are part of a "long-term strategy by the Church to exculpate, in a historically inaccurate way, the history of its own institution as relates to fascism."

The Nazi dictatorship targeted Communists, Social Democrats, liberals, trade unionists, Jews, Roma and Sinti, homosexuals, the disabled and others, Ladwig said. "It was by no means the dictatorship of a dedicated atheist movement. Resistance from within the churches came only from individuals. "

The philosopher Michael Schmidt-Salomon, head of the humanist non-profit group the Giordano Bruno Foundation, also sharply criticized Mixa. "If you bear in mind that during the Nazi era it was precisely the Jews who were accused of being godless, then one sees how perfidious Mixa's reasoning is," he told SPIEGEL ONLINE. He points out that freethinker associations were disbanded by the Nazis and avowed atheists were persecuted.

Mixa's claim that the Nazi regime was "godless" is "a massive distortion of history," Schmidt-Salomon said. Nazi ideology -- including its anti-Semitism -- was based largely on Christian traditions, he said, explaining that evidence for that can be found in Hitler's "Mein Kampf" and elsewhere. "The majority of the Nazi elite saw themselves as Christians," says Schmidt-Salomon.

Although the Nazi movement included a wide variety of currents of religious thought, ranging from nihilism to neo-paganism to Teutonic mythology to Hinduism, atheism played no significant political role for the Nazis. Avowed atheists were not welcome in the Nazi party or the SS.

The relationship of the Catholic Church to the Nazis was also an ambivalent one. Individual members of the clergy openly confronted the regime, which in some cases resulted in their persecution and murder. Others voluntarily collaborated with the dictatorship, while most simply did nothing. A systematic persecution of Christians did not take place in the Third Reich -- let alone the "special persecution of Christians and the Church" which Mixa spoke of.

Both the diocese of Augsburg and the German Bishops' Conference declined to comment on the sermon and the criticism when contacted by SPIEGEL ONLINE.

The Easter sermon was not the first time that Mixa has made comparisons to Nazism for rhetorical purposes. In February, the bishop compared the number of Jews murdered during the Holocaust with the number of abortions performed over the past decades, according to a newspaper report. The bishop's spokesman also responded to criticism of Mixa from Germany's leading Green Party politician, Claudia Roth, who called the bishop a "crazy über-fundamentalist, " by comparing her words to Nazi propaganda.

Mixa has also courted controversy on other issues. In 2007, he criticized a proposal to expand daycare in Germany by saying it would turn women into "breeding machines." Later that same year, he was criticized by the Jewish community in Germany when he compared the situation of the Palestinians to the Warsaw Ghetto.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, approximately one-third of all Germans do not belong to an organized religion. A 2005 survey conducted by AP-Ipsos showed that only 22 percent of Germans have no doubt about the existence of God, while some 23 percent of Germans identify themselves either as atheists or agnostics.

EGYPT: AYMAR NOUR, POLITICAL ERROR SENDING ME TO PRISON

EGYPT: AYMAR NOUR, POLITICAL ERROR SENDING ME TO PRISON

(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, APRIL 14 - "Imprisoning me has been a huge political mistake on the part of the regime. It has made my name known internationally and I don't think they will do it again" said Ayman Nour, Egyptian opposition leader. His remark came during a meeting in the European Parliament in Brussels in response to a question on the possible risk of going back to prison when returning to Egypt. According to the founder of the Al Ghad party, which took second place in the presidential elections of 2005 after Mubarak, his visit to the Belgian capital was his first foreign trip after being imprisoned from January 2005 to February 2009. On invitation of liberal-democrat party whip Graham Watson and the Euro-Mediterranean Network for human rights, Nour had a series of meetings with MPs of the European Parliament which in 2005, 2006 and 2008 asked for his release in several resolutions. "I don't want to give up" said Nour, "even though the government has released me but still tries to deny me my rights every day. Yesterday I was excluded from the Bar Council so that I can't practice my profession, but I am still part of the political scene". The Egyptian opposition leader cannot run for the political elections of 2010 and the presidential elections of 2011, but he explained that he wants to meet more European MPs in the UK, Sweden and Canada. So far he hasn't been invited by the Italian parliament, but "wherever Emma Bonino tells me to go I'll go", said the leader of Al Ghad, who decided today "to become a member of the transnational Radical party". Advani & Modi â€" Internal & External Threat to India â€"

Posted by: "Ravinder Singh" progressindia008@yahoo.com   progressindia008

Thu Apr 16, 2009 11:01 am (PDT)

Advani & Modi â€" Internal & External Threat to India â€" Exclusive (C)

Neither Manmohan Singh, nor Sonia Gandhi nor RSS have the precise idea of how serious internal and external threat Advani and Modi are to India.

They pose threat on three counts â€"

Economic Threat
Political Threat
Security

Qualification & Caliber â€"

·        Both are under qualified considering Post Graduates apply for class IV jobs in India.
·        Both are highly ambitious ready to do anything Unethical including demolition of churches and schools..
·        Both are adamant and seldom reverse from Path of Self Destruction. It is already clear to Modi â€" SSP project is a White Elephant â€" I am quoting from his speech at NDC wherein he expressed GoG inability to maintain SSP project but two years down the line he committed over Rs. 7000 crores on SSP related projects.

1. Advani and Modi are Economic Threat to India both internally and externally.

a.) When BJP came to power Ambani was worth about Rs. 12,000 crores today Ambani family is worth over Rs.5,00,000 crores â€" at peak last year was over Rs.10,00,000 crores. BJP let Ambani enrich but Starved Crores of Indians. They are likely to pursue such policies in future as well.

b.) We would have been delighted if Ambanis and Corporate enriched them selves from Overseas Earnings. But India actually subsidized their exports.

c.) We would have been delighted had Corporate developed new Inventions with huge resources at their disposal nothing happened but BJP only starved Indian farmers of bank credit that reduced to 7%.

d.) Gujarat desperate to industrialize state offered huge Concessions to corporate and neglected SMEs, Farmers etc.

- When you let a Indian Telecom company install a telecom tower in your property you earn say Rs.20,000 per month rent and many thousand subscribers around your property benefit. But if you let Foreign Telecom company installs a microwave station exactly similar equipment but serve no local population state get little benefit.

- Huge concessions to large projects yield negligible benefits to Gujarat.

e.) In globalize world economy we need Most Competitive Global Companies not exploiters of India.

2. Advani & Modi are Political Threat Internally & Externally.

a.) BJP consists of bunch of Mediocre & Idiots. They have no Capability except creating mischief through RSS network.

b.) Before 1989 elections I advised all parties including Advani & Vajpayee to acquire Qualified and Capable people. But 20 years down the line all BJP has is an extreme idiot in Sudheendra Kulkarni.

c.) From the two clippings it is clear BJP will dump RSS and wildly follow Loot & Plunder Formula of Modi & Advani.

http://www.rediff. com///news/ 2005/jul/ 01advpak1. htm
“The BJP-PSS relationship will have to be recast. The RSS should not micro-manage the affairs of the party. It must, especially, not make any public comments on the top leaders of the party. The RSS must realize that the people of India do not like to see their leaders remote controlled by an external entity. Sudheendra Kulkarni

“L.K. Advani believes that common people connect to GDP not when it is understood as gross domestic product but when it is good governance, development and (security to) people, Sudheendra Kulkarni, an adviser to the prime minister hopeful, told IANS in an interview.

- It was not good governance when Modi didn’t not release SER2009 and didn’t inform people of Gujarat â€"

> Food Production is stagnant at 1998 level and Gujarat rank 13th behind Orissa.
> Power availability is stagnant for four years.
> Area under Canal irrigation has not increased since 1995.
> Gujarat created 1.9 lakh net employments in organized sector over five years but around 5 lakh diamond workers alone lost jobs last year.

d.) Sudheendra Kulkarni though excellent PR when giving interviews to Suresh Prabhu or individual interviews but is Extreme Idiot and he never faced professionals in group discussions.

e.) BJP deliberately sabotage “Nuclear Deal bordering on treason.

- He talks of water issues without understanding anything and did nothing to prevent and control Kosi Floods, waste of public money on SSP over 10 years. I proposed 10,000 cusec system in 1999 against 40,000 cusec SSP Canal Network.

- He talks of power- BJP ruled Gujarat, Bihar and MP are critically short of power.

e.) He is a big liability to BJP & RSS.

f.) Not that INC has highly talented people serving it but average grade advisors are connected to foreign experts that largely cover their weaknesses and unlike Sudheendra don’t advise Manmohan Singh to ditch Sonia Gandhi.

- Send a petition to INC government; It would slow down on bad projects almost always, like SEZ for example. River Linking project was slowed down as also NHAI projects.

- Only BJP would promote over sized Four Lane Highway through entire length even when 80% of sections don’t have even single lane traffic.

- SSP is hugely over designed but would turn to even bigger disaster when MP decides to use 18 maf of water allocated to MP. Very little water will be left for Gujarat.

3. Modi and Advani are Security Threat Internally and Externally.

a.) International Religious Freedom Reports and International Human Rights Reports single out Modi & Advani role in creating Communal Riots through its various factions and are busy fueling communal disputes at all times.

b.) Human Rights groups and secular leaders single out Modi and Advani as the main trouble makers.

c.) VISA to Modi was denied. There is boycott of Gujarat by most G-20 nations.

d.) Exploded Nuclear Bombs leading Nuclear Explosion Contest with Pakistan driving India in to military confrontations on several occasions. This invited sanctions on transfer of high technology to India.

Conclusions: -

A. Today’s globalize economy countries need leaders of high caliber & integrity and totally clean background both Modi & Advani fall in “Most Tainted category those are backed teams of most talented professionals operating in transparent and interactive manner, Modi and Advani have teams of mediocre operating in secrecy, are not accessible and specialize in FOOL INDIA data creation.

·        Sethusamudram and Riverlinking were BJP agendas from 1999 election both are unviable and undesirable projects â€" creation of Sudheendra Kulkarni.

B. Today’s globalize economy best suit globally competitive Inventors & Innovators not traders and manipulators that Modi & Advani promote.

C. Most important India need Food Security & Employment Generation, BJP/ NDA neglected both during NDA rule and Gujarat for almost 15 years. Credit to 700 million farming population was reduced to 7% and SMEs to even less 3% of bank credit.

D. Credit to 700 million farmers was $17b at the end of NDA term but Ratan Tata alone secured $20b for foreign acquisitions that didn’t create a single Indian job.

Teesta Setalvad Malicious Report A BJP Mischief

Teesta Setalvad Malicious Report A BJP Mischief

In following rebuttals it is clear BJP has yet again manipulated press to defame Human Right Activists in a malicious manner.

In SK Dubey “Letter to Atal Bihari Vajpayee Case BJP planted several groups to sabotage investigations in SKD letter detailing MEGA FRAUD in NHAI projects.

Even Supreme Court of India was fooled in to issuing notices to CBI when it was already investigating SKD murder. Even money collected for family of SKD was released after three months delay only after his father signed an affidavit that limited CBI investigation to Bihar section of NHAI project when SKD was posted at Kodarma in Jharkhand and SKD disclosed MEGA FRAUD on Nationwide scale.

Ravinder Singh

Teesta's Rebuttal to Times of India report, dated April 14, 2009
The report in the The Times of India, Mumbai edition dated April 14, 2009 and reportedly published prominently in all the newspapers editions titled “NGOS, Teesta spiced up Gujarat riots cases: SIT is clear example of manipulative reportage. It is also a report aimed to deliberately distort and damage the reputation of a citizens’ legal rights group working assiduously to ensure legal support to victims of the Gujarat carnage of 2002, ( as also the victims of bomb blasts of 2006, 2009 and the Kandhmals victims).

The allegations imputed by reporter Dhananjay Mahapatra who was present in the Supreme Court in the first para of his report to the Special Investigative Team (SIT) appointed by the Supreme Court are in fact extracted from a four page note circulated by Ms Hemantika Wahi for the Gujarat Government, a copy of which is annexed here. It is not a note prepared by the Special Investigation Team led by RK Raghavan. Shri Raghavan was not present in the Supreme Court, yet there is a deliberate attempt by Mahapatra to impute that Raghavan was present in the court and that he as chairperson of SIT, himself, in person, or in writing made these allegations. This is a clever distortion of the proceedings in the Supreme Court aimed to create a public perception that Setalvad and the CJP misled the apex court.

The detailed report of SIT submitted to the Supreme Court on March 6, 2007 has not been available for study either to National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the petitioners in this case, or the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) who have intervened in this critical matter or to any in the media. In its written note that the Gujarat state circulated in court yesterday, the state has given its brief comments on the SIT report. In para four of this note the Gujarat government note refers to alleged statements made by some witnesses in the Gulberg case before SIT that name accused other than those named by them in the written statements that were (according to the state of Gujarat) given to them by Teesta Setalvad and advocates. This is the version of the Gujarat state. Besides this, Mukhul Rohatgi tried to make a populaist speech in court saying that incidents like the Kauser Bano case etc never happened. Justice Pasiath intervened stating that they
were not interested in personal allegations and only ensuring that, like in the course of the Zahira Shaikh case, the trials are fair, the truth comes out and the course of justice is served.

It appears that the reporter spoke to Rohatgi outside the court himself and spiced up the story. The result is a report that especially promotes the case made by the Gujarat government itself, It may have been pertinent for the court reporter of a responsible publication to point out to its readers that:
The arrests of minister Dr Maya Kodnani and Dr Jaideep Patel in the past weeks were on the basis of SIT re-investigations. Twelve FIRs filed by witnesses naming these accused in 2002 had been clubbed into a magnum FIR by the Ahmedabad crime branch that had dropped the names of these powerful accused;

The arrests of investigating officer KG Erda in the Gulberg case and of other policemen in the other cases over the past months has meant the claims of witness survivors and legal rights groups, prima facie, are valid;

That this was one of the issues why the apex court has chosen to appoint SIT, the full scale subversion of the process of justice, from the removal of names of accused who’s names appeared in earlier statements simply because they enjoyed political patronage; the appointment of prosecutors with allegiances to the BJP and VHP which meant instead of promoting fair trial they sided with the politically powerful and protected accused;

More pertinently the tragic slaying of pregnant Kauser Bano at Naroda Patiya after slitting her womb was reported in Deccan Herald,(April 17, 2004) and The Indian Express, (March 23,2005) among others apart from finding place in innumerable reports including the one authored by the Concerned Citizens Tribunal-Crimes Against Humanity 2002 headed by two Supreme Court judges, Justices Krishna Iyer and PB Sawant. Similarly the British national case was similarly documented apart from being covered in The Pioneer, March 3, 2002 and The Hindu, April 23, 2002.

Besides several reports on the Gujarat genocide of 2002 showed the high level of state complicity in the violence including the “We Have No Orders To Save You--State Participation and Complicity in Communal Violence in Gujarat (http://www.hrw. org/reports/ 2002/india/)

Identical allegations were made about Teesta Setalvad and the CJP during the course of the Best Bakery Trial following which Setalvad’s application to the apex court for a full fledged inquiry led to a Registrar’s investigation that exonerated Setalvad and the CJP triumphantly;

In the interests of fair reportage and to ensure that the reputation of a citizens group committed to equity and justice is not deliberately vitiated before the trials commence, the newspaper should carry this rebuttal in full. A failure to do so will result in the columns of a national newspaper being used to distort facts, shape public perception and seek to influence the outcome of due process of law and justice to the victims of mass murder.

Citizens for Justice and Peace

CPJ Rebuttal on media reports alleging that NGOs, Teesta etc misled the apex court and exaggerated the violence in Gujarat

Mumbai, April 14, 2009

CJP’s Rebuttal on Media Coverage of Supreme Court Proceedings, April 13, 2009

The report in sections of the national media dated April 14, 2009, alleging that NGOs, Teesta etc misled the apex court and exaggerated the violence in Gujarat in 2002 are clear example of irresponsible reportage. Intentionally or otherwise, the distorted report damages the reputation of a citizens’ group that has been recognized nationally and internationally for working assiduously to ensure justice to the victims of mass violence whether in case of the Gujarat carnage (2002), or the bomb blasts in Mumbai (2006 and 2008) or the communal carnage in Kandhamal district, Orissa (2008), irrespective of the caste or creed of the victims or the perpetrators.

The fact is that neither Sri Raghavan, nor any other SIT member was present at the apex court to “tell it anything. These reports could only be referring to a contention made in a four page note circulated by Ms Hemantika Wahi for the Gujarat Government. It was not a note prepared by SIT.

The detailed report of SIT submitted to the Supreme Court on March 6, 2007 has not been available for study either to National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the petitioners in this case, or the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) who have intervened in this critical matter or to any in the media. Any reference to it is hence hearsay and it may amount to contempt of court to write about a report which the Court has specifically not made public.

The Supreme Court disregarded this argument and did not allow Mr. Rohatgi to read anything from the report. The court went on to state that they were not interested in personal allegations and only ensuring that, like in the course of the Zahira Shaikh case, the trials are fair, the truth comes out and the course of justice is served.

It is necessary to recalled that in the course of the Best Bakery trial, too, the Gujarat government had tried to divert the court’s attention by engineering charges against Teesta Setalvad, secretary CJP and by implication the NGO. On Setalvad’s application to the apex court for a full fledged inquiry the report of the Registrar of the apex court exonerated Setalvad and the NGO completely.

As reported by the rest of the national media, on Monday, ignoring Sri Rohatgi’s bid to side-step the main issues, the three-member bench of the Supreme Court remained focused on the modalities of setting up designated courts for the trial of the accused in the post-Godhra riot cases in Gujarat. Instead of highlighting the court proceedings, Sri Mahapatra chose to spice up his report focusing not on the deliberations or the intentions of the apex court but to promote the case of the Gujarat government.

The moot question is whether or not 2,500 persons were killed in a ghastly perpetrated massacre following the tragic burning alive of 59 persons on the Sabarmati express; whether or not ex parliamentarian Ahsan Jafri was mutilated before being burnt alive, whether the bodies of the missing dead (over 220) have not been found or returned for dignified burial after seven long years? All the national media was witness to this national tragedy.

In the interests of fair reportage and to ensure that the reputation of a citizens group committed to equity and justice is not deliberately vitiated before the trials commence, the media should carry this rebuttal in full. A failure to do so will result in the columns of a national newspaper being used to distort facts, shape public perception and seek to influence the outcome of due process of law and justice to the victims of mass murder.

(Statement by Citizens for Justice and Peace, Mumbai, April 14, 2009, Mumbai)

India: Election marred by Maoist attacks

India: Election marred by Maoist attacks

New Delhi, 16 April (AKI) - At least 11 people, including nine paramilitary soldiers, were killed in India on Thursday in election day attacks by Maoist rebels in the east of the country, officials said. More than 700 million Indians are eligible to vote in the elections being held for the lower house of parliament in the world's largest democracy.

The first round of voting is taking place in the country's 15th general elections, amid fears of terrorist attacks.

The incumbent Congress-led coalition government is facing a challenge from the main opposition, the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance.

In Jharkhand state, Maoist rebels reportedly set off a landmine and ambushed a bus carrying security forces for duty at polling stations.

Seven soldiers and two civilians died in the attack, police spokesman S.N. Pradhan told reporters from Latehar district, which has been struck by several deadly Maoist attacks in recent days.

In neighbouring Bihar state, two security personnel were shot dead and another wounded by the rebels in Gaya district, Indian media reported.

In Chattisgarh state, several gun battles were reported to have taken place in a densely forested region that serves as the main base of the left-wing rebels.

Jharkhand, Bihar and Chattisgarh are among several 124 constituencies where voters were expected to go to the polls in the first stage of a month-long general election.

Polling in areas hit by the Maoist insurgency has been staggered over several phases to enable the adequate deployment of security personnel.

Neither of India's two main national parties - the incumbent Congress nor the BJP - is considered capable of securing an absolute majority in the five-stage polls.

Regional and local parties are expected to win half the 543 parliamentary seats, so the elections may lead to intense negotiations as the major parties seek to form a viable coalition.

Italy: European rights watchdog attacks immigration record

Italy: European rights watchdog attacks immigration record

Strasbourg, 16 April (AKI) - Europe's top human rights watchdog on Thursday expressed "deep concern" over the conservative Italian government's hardline immigration policies, including plans to make illegal immigration a crime and a controversial census of Sinti and Roma Gypsies in Italy.

"Criminalising migrants is a disproportionate measure which risks igniting further discriminatory and xenophobic tendencies in the country," said the Council of Europe's human rights commissioner, Thomas Hammarberg in a new report.

Hammarberg's latest report followed a two-day visit to Italy in January, during which he visited Gypsy camps in the capital, Rome, and met Italian government officials, human rights organisations, and members of the Italian senate's newly formed Human Rights Commission.

"Italy should eradicate discrimination and xenophobia and improve its migration policy," he stressed.

Hammarberg expressed "serious concerns" about Italy's policies towards its Roma Gypsy minority, which he said faces "a persistent climate of intolerance. "

"Their living conditions are still unacceptable in a number of settlements that I visited," he warned.

There are an estimated 160,000 Roma Gypsies in Italy, nearly half of whom were born in Italy and have Italian citizenship.

Others come from European Union countries such as Romania and the countries of the former Yugoslavia.

Most live in illegal camps, many of which are being demolished following a series of high-profile rapes allegedly committed by Roma Gypsies.

There have also been vigilante-style attacks against Romanians in various parts of Italy.

Hammarberg conceded that some efforts had been made to improve the situation of the Roma. "Local good practices exist in the country, and they should be broadened," he said.

But he voiced "deep concern" about the government's controversial census of Roma and Sinti settlements in Italy and its "compatibility with European standards guiding the collection and processing of personal data."

The Italian government claims the census, which began last year, is aimed at establishing who has the right to be in Italy and to give those individuals access to education and social services.

Hammarberg urged the authorities to create "consultative mechanisms" at all levels with the Roma and Sinti Gypsy communities. This is needed to avoid evictions without offering alternative housing and appropriate education for Gypsy children, he noted.

He also recommended that representation of ethnic groups in the police be increased and that the government establish an independent national human rights institution, such as an ombudsman to strengthen protection for their human rights.

He attacked Italy's draft law on public security for its possible negative effects on migrants' rights.

This includes making illegal immigration a crime, obliging health workers to report illegal immigrants to police and creating local security patrols made up of 'concerned citizens'.

INDEPENDENT COMMITTEE ON INCIDENTS OF 26-27th MARCH 2009 IN SABARMAT

Posted by: "Karthik Navayan" navayan@gmail.com

Thu Apr 16, 2009 11:04 am (PDT)

Dear Sir/Madam,
Prelimanary Report of INDEPENDENT COMMITTEE ON INCIDENTS OF 26-27th MARCH
2009 IN SABARMATI JAIL,
AHMEDABAD.

*INDEPENDENT COMMITTEE ON INCIDENTS OF 26-27th MARCH 2009 IN SABARMATI JAIL,
AHMEDABAD, GUJARAT*

CAMP: People’s Union for Civil Liberties c/o Gandhi peace Foundation,
Himavan, Paldi Char Rasta, Ahmadabad 380006

*PRESS NOTE*

*AHMEDABAD, April 16, 2009*

* *

* *

An Independent committee of senior national human rights activists has
expressed its deep concern at the government handling of the beating up of
22 inmates of the Sabarmati Jail on 25 March 2009, and has called for a full
enquiry, preferably a judicial one by a judge of the High Court, into gross
violations of the Jail manual and human rights norms established by the
Courts and the NHRC. Regrettably, the incident reinforces the image of
Gujarat as a state where the human rights of religious minorities and weaker
sections are not honoured.

Inmates, most of them Muslim, who were on a hunger strike, were denied
medical attention after a brutal attack on them by jail staff, which left at
least three of them unconscious for so long as to start rumours in the city
that they had died. They were subsequently denied access to counsel, their
relatives were refused permission to meet them for three days, and then the
Sabarmati Police station failed to register an FIR as sought by relatives
and counsel of the victims.

The independent committee consisted of Dr. John Dayal, Member, National
Integration Council, Govt. of India, Adv. K. Kesavan, Joint Secretary, CPCL,
Tamil Nadu, Dr. J. S. Bandukwala, President, PUCL, Gujarat, Dr. S. Q. R.
Ilyas, Editor, Afkar-e-Milli, New Delhi, Mr. Gopal Menon, Film Maker,
Bangalore, Mr. Mahtab Alam,Coordinator, Association for the Protection of
Civil Rights (APCR), New Delhi, Ms. Harini Krishna, Film Maker, Mumbai, and
Ms. Ruchi Shroff, Civil Rights Activist, Mumbai, Mr. Gautam Thakar,
Secretary, Secretary, PUCL, Gujarat was in Ahmadabad from 15th to
16thApril 09.

At a public hearing, the Committee heard statements from mothers, wives and
sisters of the jail inmates who gave detailed narrative of the events in the
jail as they had heard from the inmates when they were finally allowed to
meet them. The women presented blood stained clothes of the inmates. Counsel
gave the committee copies of the PIL filed in the Gujarat High Court, the
medical report filed by two lawyers who had met the inmates in jail, as also
correspondence with the jail and police authorities seeking justice and
medical care for the injured.

The committee made several efforts to approach the authorities. The
committee in fact went to the Sabarmati jail and met Superintendent
Chandrashekhar who refused permission to visit the concerned ward and meet
the inmates. Inspector general of police Mr. Keshav Kumar, despite a written
request followed up by repeated visits to his office and a telephone
conversation with him would not find time for the committee. The visit to
the Sabarmati Police station was an eye-opener where ACP Vaghela, SHO Joshi
and Inspector Parmar all but justified the violence against the inmates
saying they were criminals accused in Bomb blasts, and had indulged in
violence in the Jail. The three officers admitted an FIR had been registered
at the behest of the Jail authorities. They denied they had even received
complaints from the families of the victims in this case.

The investigating committee does not comment on the cases in which these 22
persons are in jail, or even on several other events that have taken place
in the Sabarmati jail in recent weeks which go to show that all is not right
with its administration. But it is clear from the testimony of the relatives
of the victims and the admission of the police officers that the chain of
events has been triggered off with the coming of the new Jail Superintendent
who stopped long standing practices of taking ill and injured inmates to the
civil hospital, provision of highly specialized medicine and curtailed other
rights. It was in response to this that the prisoners went on a highly
publicized hunger strike.

The committee will submit a detailed report in a couple of weeks. But it is
important to record its preliminary findings and recommendations.

Hippocrates once said “Give me a fever and I can cure the child. By understanding that a simple fever is a symptom rather than a condition orillness in itself, you soon come to realise that it is an ally and notan enemy. Fevers are the first sign that your child’s immune symptom isfunctioning as it should. By increasing core body temperature, feversenable the immune system to swing into action, indicating the body’sdefences are fighting an infection and consequent temperaturefluctuat ions indicate how the body is coping. - Natural Parenting.

Pakistan: Militants to be 'protected' under Swat law

Pakistan: Militants to be 'protected' under Swat law

Islamabad, 15 April (AKI/DAWN) - Sufi Mohammad, the head of the Pakistani militant group Tehrik-i-Nifaz- i-Shariat- i-Muhammadi on Tuesday said militants accused of brutal killings would not be prosecuted under Islamic law administered in the troubled Swat valley.

"We intend to bury the past," the leader told a private television channel, off-camera. "Past things will be left behind and we will go for a new life in peace."

Mohammad's assertion highlights the dilemma facing the government as it seeks to halt 18 months of bloodletting in the Swat valley while convincing the nation, and the West, that it is not capitulating to militants.

Asked during the television interview on Tuesday whether the new courts would hear complaints from Swat residents about militant cleric Mullah Fazlullah or his followers, Sufi Mohammad said they could not.

Asked if the Taliban would enjoy such immunity, an NWFP minister only pleaded for peace.

"Everyone should understand what we have gone through and what kind of hardship people in Swat have suffered," Wajid Ali Khan said. "We can look into any disputes and controversy at some later stage."

A Taliban spokesman said that militants would cooperate if Islamic law was quickly implemented.

"The world will see how much peace and prosperity comes to this region," Khan said.

Mohammad said his followers would tour all districts of Malakand, including Buner, to "ensure peace". He also said that the courts would interpret civil rights according to Islamic strictures.

North West Frontier Province's Malakand region encompasses the Swat valley.

"Women will have full protection and rights under Sharia (Islamic law). They will live a better life, but behind the veil," he said.

Meanwhile, the Swat Taliban have "banned" the display of weapons in bazaars and other urban areas, saying there is no need to take up arms if 'Shariat' is enforced in letter and spirit.

The decision was taken after an appeal by Mohammad, Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan told journalists.

He said the Taliban had achieved their goal and they were ready to cooperate for the quick implementation of Islamic law.

He also praised president Asif Ali Zardari and members of the national assembly for having quickly approved this.

He expressed the hope that Islamic law would soon be implemented in letter and spirit.

Tehreek-e-Nafaz- e-Shariat- e-Mohammadi is a Pakistani militant group whose objective is to enforce Sharia law in the country.

SAUDI ARABIA Saudi court confirms validity of marriage for eight-yea

SAUDI ARABIA
Saudi court confirms validity of marriage for eight-year-old girl
Criticisms from UNICEF and the U.S. State Department. The Riyadh justice minister himself says that he wants to put an end to the arbitrary power of parents who arrange marriages for minor children, but does not mention any ban.

Riyadh (AsiaNews/Agencies) - UNICEF, the U.S. State Department, and human rights groups are protesting over the sentence from the Saudi court of Unaiza, which has confirmed the validity of the marriage between an eight-year-old girl and a fifty-year-old man.

The court confirmed that Islamic tradition allows girls to marry, on the condition that they not have sexual relations before puberty.

In theory, the woman's consent is required for a marriage to be valid, but many officials who perform weddings do not feel it is necessary to ask for this.

The question of the minimum age for marriage is extremely controversial in Islamic countries. Those who oppose setting one point out the fact that Mohammed himself took a nine-year-old girl as a wife. But women's movements and women in general see it as indirect human trafficking, in addition to its being the violation of a fundamental human right. This can even lead to the abandonment of the Islamic religion.

This case, however, seems capable of providing a jolt to the system, partly because of the desire for the modernization of his country expressed by King Abdullah. If UNICEF has said that it is "deeply concerned" by the sentence of the Saudi court, asserting that child marriage is "a violation of that child's rights," and a spokesman for the State Department, Robert Wood, has called it "a clear and unacceptable violation of human rights," the Saudi justice minister himself, Mohamed al-Issa, has announced that he wants to "put an end to arbitrariness by parents and guardians in marrying off minor girls." The minister, however, did not mention a ban, but only the desire to "preserve the rights" of girls, and "end the negative aspects of underage girls' marriage."

Behind marriages like these, in fact, in addition to tribal traditions, there is often economic trafficking, with actual "purchase" of child brides on the part of adult men. The practice, in fact, is present above all in the poorest areas of countries in the Arabian Peninsula, like Yemen.

HUMAN RIGHTS: RENEWED EGYPTIAN CRITICISM OF US REPORT

HUMAN RIGHTS: RENEWED EGYPTIAN CRITICISM OF US REPORT

(ANSAmed) - CAIRO, APRIL 16 - The report issued by the US State Department on the condition of human rights in Egypt continues to attract criticism from Cairo. The Cairo government already rejected the findings a few days after its publication in February as "interference in the internal affairs" of the country. It is a theme that has been revived over recent days by Egyptian MP, Moufid Shehab, according to a report in today's Al Ahram newspaper. "The US report is misleading and contains untrue statements", Shehab told a meeting of the parliamentary human rights committee. Shaheb went on to call the US report "interference" in Egyptian internal affairs, denying reports that Egypt is carrying out investigations into certain terrorist suspects on behalf of the United States. The annual human rights report of the US State Department asserts that the human rights situation worsened in Egypt in 2008, along with ten other countries: Mauritania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Zimbabwe, China, Sri Lanka, Armenia, Iran, Cuba and Venezuela. INDIA What Indian Christians can hope from these elections

INDIA
What Indian Christians can hope from these elections
by CT Nilesh
Voting, which began today, is scheduled to last a month. For Christians two factors are a potential sign of change: the end of the alliance between the BJP and Orissa's Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and his party, and the election of a new leader to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS or National Volunteers' Organisation) .

New Delhi (AsiaNews) - The political scenario is becoming more complicated day by day. The old alliances are breaking up. Every party wants to go alone to face the electorate, hoping to gain and be in a better bargaining position to make alliances for the future government. New regional parties are appearing, moved by the desire to acquire statehood or by the need to resolve regional problems. Most probably the two national parties, Congress and BJP will suffer a loss. There is a lot of talks about a third front, around the communist party and Dalit parties, hopeful to put up a government without the Congress and BJP, but among them there are too many self proclaimed candidates for prime minister. The real battle will be in the second half of May, when the results will be known and the leaders will start working out coalitions, promising ministerial berths right and left.
One survey published on The Times of India said that the Congress will emerge as the single largest party with 144 seats, but will find the BJP just a step behind with 137.

If the Congress will be able to convince the present allies it will get 257 seats but it will fall still short of the required majority of 272 in a house of 543 members.

Will the Christian community gain from the present election? The question is particularly relevant in places where they suffered persecution in the recent past like in Orissa.

Two events may have some bearing on this question.

First the chief minister of Orissa, Naveen Patnaik, with his party, had broken away from the BJP. Second the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) has a new leader in Mohan Madhukar Bhagwat.

The first event was greeted with great enthusiasm by the Archbishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar , Raphael Cheenath. He said that the church is happy to see Orissa's ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) parts ways with ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Violence against Christians in Orissa by Hindu rightwing activists last year, particularly in Kandhamal district, is believed to be one of the reasons behind the collapse of the BJD-BJP alliance in the state.

"The Kandhamal incident may be one of the reasons for breaking the alliance" Cheenath acknowledged. Communist Party of India-Marxist general Secretary, Praksh Karat, has said his party leaders met Orissa Chief Minister and BJD chief, Naveen Patnaik, following the attack on Christians by rightwing Hindu groups and told him that "it is untenable for him to continue with the BJP".

Kandhamal district in Orissa witnessed large-scale violence against Christians after the murder of Hindu leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, August 23 last year. At least 38 people were killed and thousands of Christians were driven out of their homes. . More than 3,000 people are still living in government relief camps.

Cheenath himself received death threats from alleged VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad) activists that his life would be taken to avenge the killing of the Hindu seer. He expressed hope that secular forces would come to power in the state after the general elections.

Another encouraging fact in Orissa is the recent arrest of the local BJP candidate to Lok Sabha, Ashok Sahu. He was arrested Tuesday for making an inflammatory speech in Orissa's Kandhamal region earlier this month. 'Sahu was arrested from Phulbani town,' Kandhamal District Collector Krishan Kumar told Asia News. He was accused of delivering a communally charged speech on April 5 at a public meeting in Raikia town. He allegedly accused the church of indulging in conversion. During his two-hour-long speech he accused Congress Rajya Sabha MP Radhakant Naik and archbishop Cheenath and missionaries of plotting the Swami murder. He also held the church responsible for the insurgency in the north-east of India and Maoist violence in Jharkhand and Kandhamal. His hate speech prompted the administration to lodge a complaint against him on April .

Kandhamal DM Krishna Kumar said: "We had also sent the videotape and other proof to the Election Commission." He was arrested in the district headquarters town of Phulbani. He was produces before a local court which remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days. Sahu, linked to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, had made similar remarks during the communal violence last year. Christian leaders had immediately refuted the allegations. While Sahu is contesting the Kandhamal Lok Sabha seat, the BJP has also nominated Manoj Pradhan, an accused in the riots, for the assembly election from G. Udayagiri constituency in the district. Pradhan was arrested about four months ago and is still in jail.

The second event that can have a bearing on the relationship between the Christians and the rightwing Hindu organisations is the change of leadership at the top of RSS.

Mohan Madhukar Bhagawat, a 58 year old veterinary doctor, was elected last month as the sixth Sarsanghchalak. He comes from a family of RSS activists. His father, Madhukar, is known to have initiated LK Advani into RSS fold.

Bhagawat is seen as unifier within the Sangh. Bringing back a sense of equilibrium within the BJP and the Sangh Parivar's functioning are expected to top his priorities.

One of his first priorities will also be to prepare a second line of leadership after the aging LK Advani.

In the recent past the Jesuits had tried to start a dialogue with the RSS, but with little success. The RSS founded in 1925, is keeping the idea of a colonial church, not acknowledging the changes of Vatican II. With a new leadership, a new start can be made on the basis of the recent documents of the Vatican and World Council of Churches on conversion and freedom of religion.

Indonesia: Voters favour secular rule

Jakarta, 15 April (AKI/Jakarta Post) - Despite significant support for Islamic parties, the latest parliamentary election in Indonesia showed that voters favour secular rather than religious political parties to lead the country.

Preliminary counting for the 9 April parliamentary election by four independent survey organisations shows that four Islamist parties will be represented in the national legislature.

They are the Justice Prosperity Party (PKS), the National Mandate Party (PAN), the National Awakening Party (PKB) and the United Development Party (PPP).

While each of these parties secured between five and eight percent of the national vote, together they accounted for less than 25 percent.

Nevertheless on Tuesday several of the country's key political parties claimed that Indonesia's parliamentary election was marred by fraud and administrative errors, while they stopped short of rejecting the poll that early counts showed the president's Democratic Party has won.

A statement issued by party leaders said the organisation of the election, the third since former president Suharto stepped down in 1998, was the worst since Indonesia entered the reform era.

"The legislative election was marred by fraud and administrative mistakes, which were systematic," former general Wiranto, who heads the Hanura Party, said in a statement.

The statement was also signed by former president Megawati Sukarnoputri of the main opposition PDI-P party and another ex-general, Prabowo Subianto of the Gerindra party.

All three party leaders have ambitions to run in the presidential election on 8 July.

The Democratic Party (PD) of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono polled more than 20 percent, while Golkar and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) each received around 14 percent, according to early results.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono told a cabinet meeting that the election commission would be asked to look at any problems before July's presidential ballot.
