Subject: Buddha-Direct 1602: The Divine Ear!
Friends:
Establishing Awareness gains Divine Hearing!
Once when the Venerable Anuruddha was dwelling at Savatthi in Jeta's Grove,
in Anāthapindika's Park, man y Bhikkhus went to Anuruddha & exchanged polite
greetings with him. Then the y sat down to one side & asked the Ven. Anuruddha:
Venerable Sir: What has the Venerable Anuruddha developed and cultivated so
that he has attained to his famous greatness of direct knowledge?
It is because I have developed & cultivated these 4 Foundations of Awareness
that I have won great direct knowledge. What four? Here, friends, I dwell alwa y s
constantl y contemplating upon:
The Body onl y as a constructed group, neither as I, me, mine, nor as a self...
The Feelings onl y as passing responses, neither as I, as mine, nor as m y self...
The Mind onl y as temporar y moods, neither as I, mine, nor as an y part of self...
All Phenomena onl y as appearing mental states, not as an y real or absolute...
while eager, clearly comprehending, & full y aware, thereb y removing all desire and
frustration rooted in this world! It is, friends, because I have developed and much
cultivated these Four Foundations of Awareness that I have become empowered
with suprahuman forces: With the divine ear element, which is purified, refined,
subtle and surpasses the human, I hear both divine and human sounds, both those
that are far awa y as well as those that are near.
