Mumbai, May 21: Sixteen police personnel, including five women constables, were ambushed and killed this evening in a Maoist hotbed that had seen a 54 per cent turnout despite the rebels' call for a poll boycott.
The attack in Gadchiroli, 300km from Nagpur, was the second such incident in the area in three months.
Inspector Avinash Iyer and sub-inspector Shantaram Ghorpade were on their way to clear a roadblock 50km from Gadchiroli town when they were surrounded and shot dead. The intimation about the roadblock to Dhanora police station, from where the team had set out, turned out to be a trap.
Gadchiroli collector Ajay Patne said another squad, led by district police chief Rajesh Pradhan, was fired at when it went to recover the bodies tonight. "We should be able to get the bodies tomorrow," he said.
Today's attack, after a February 1 ambush that killed 15 policemen, is being viewed as an attempt to hit back at the authorities for having conducted the polls in the face of the boycott call, Patne said.

NAGPUR / MUMBAI: Maoists killed 16 police personnel, including four women, in Maharashtra' s Gadchiroli district Thursday evening - the second major attack by the ultras in four months.
Meanwhile, Minister of State for Home Nitin Raut has vowed to crush the Maoist menace in the state with a "bullet for bullet" policy.
"The Maoists have strayed from their so-called noble ideals of helping the poor people get justice. This is not what is expected of them. This is the most severe attack on the rule of law in the state. We shall not spare them - it is 'bullet for bullet' henceforth," a determined Raut told IANS.
Recounting the sequence of events, Raut said that the 16 police personnel were travelling in two vehicles - a Maruti Gypsy and a Commander jeep - in Hattigota area in Gadchiroli district, 300 km from Nagpur, when a heavily armed gang of Maoists opened fire on them at around 4.30 p.m.
This is the second brutal attack on security forces in the Maoist-infested Dhanora sub-district. On Feb 1, as many as 15 policemen were killed in Morke village in a Maoist ambush.
The two attacks - within a span of four months - have come as a major shock to the Ashok Chavan-led Democratic Front government.
Raut has left by road from Nagpur for the incident site. He is expected to monitor the flushing out operations. State Home Minister Jayant Patil is leaving for Gadchiroli Friday morning.
According to police, the Maoists had ordered for a two-day shut-down in the area which was due to end Thursday evening.
"The police patrol was on a routine recce mission post-shutdown to prevent any untoward incident when they were attacked by an unknown number of Maoists," said Deputy Superintendent of police of Gadchiroli, Srihari Munde.
Raut said this is the first instance in which at least four policewomen have been killed by the Maoists.
He said additional security forces are being rushed to the affected areas from the neighbouring districts of Chandrapur, Bhandara and Nagpur.
Senior officials from the district, including Superintendent of Police Rajesh Pradhan and Anti-Naxalite Squad (ANS) chief Pankaj Gupta have also rushed to Dhanora to supervise the combing operations in the thick forests.
Meanwhile, Gadchiroli police control said the bodies of the killed police personnel are being brought to the district headquarters.

Naxals enforce bandh in Malkangiri

BERHAMPUR: Naxals and their supporters cut down large trees to snap road communication between Jeypore in Koraput district and Malkangiri town on Thursday.
It was the second day of their two-day bandh call in undivided Koraput district. According to sources a huge number of large trees fell to the axes of red rebels near Govindpalli under Mathili police station in Malkangiri district. As the number of cut down trees was high, the road between Jeypore and Malkangiri could not be opened up till afternoon.
Shops closed
The effect of the naxals bandh had its impact in all parts of Malkangiri district as vehicular traffic was almost nil. Shops and business establishments remained closed due to naxal fear. The road communication between Balimela and Chitrakonda also remained snapped for the second day due to felling of trees by Maoist supporters.
It also proved that Govindpalli area is fast becoming a major base of Maoist elements.
Naxals used hundreds of their tribal supporters to cut down the large trees adjacent to the road to snap the road communication.
It was felt they may have taken more than six hours to cut these large trees.
It may be noted that on April 16 , an exchange of fire had occurred between the CRPF personnel and naxals in this area. The security forces were returning back from polling booths to Malkangiri.
On Feb. 22 night Maoists had killed a contractor Prasanna Kumar Swain, blasted the control room of the BSNL mobile communication tower, ransacked the police outpost and forest rest shed at Govindpalli. But no major untoward incident was reported from Koraput district on Thursday. Security forces continued their combing operation in naxal infested areas and inter state borders to check violent mischief by Maoists.
