Subject: [issuesonline_worldwide] I couldn't believe it: Jailed for seeking asylum
I couldn't believe it: Since 2003, over 48,000 men and women
have been detained in jails for months - sometimes years -- by
the United States.
And for what crime? They were jailed after they came here
seeking asylum from persecution in their own countries.
Each year the United States detains thousands of asylum seekers
in prisons or prison-like facilities - and in the last years it
has gotten much worse. Just since 2005, the Department of
Homeland Security has increased detention beds by 78%.
That's why I'm writing you now. Right now, the Obama
administration' s new leadership at the Department of Homeland
Security has a window of opportunity to change its deplorable
(and costly) detention of asylum seekers.
The DHS has made assurances that it is reviewing practices, but
we must make sure they actually make reforms that are real and
lasting. I've just written them a letter urging the immediate
improvement of the treatment of asylum seekers, but we need as
many people as possible to get involved if we want to ensure
change.
Will you consider writing your own letter? It would mean a lot
to me - you can check out the campaign here:
