IPCRI Panel on Settlement Expansion: If Current Settlement Trends Continue, They Will Devastate Two-State Solution — But Analysts Remain "Cautiously Optimistic"
Isabel Nicholson - AIC - "The rise of the ultra-orthodox settlements is a new trend in recent years […]. Given that the ultra-orthodox are traditionally very poor and prefer to live in enclosed areas among themselves, settlements in the West Bank are ideal, as the cost of living is dramatically cheaper, and they are secluded from the surrounding population. As for political gains, support for ultra-religious settlements was helpful for Prime Minister Olmert because along with it came support from the religious party Shas, who threatened to leave the last coalition if Olmert did not support the growth of their settlements. Arab Collaborators, Traitors and Spies
Defense of Corrupt Collaborators: In defense of nepotism and favoritism
Bethlehem – Ma'an – Challenging the fifth annual Aman: Palestinian Coalition for Accountability and Integrity report is not a good risk to take, but its conclusions warrant some deep thinking; is the nepotism the report talks about intentional corruption or is it the inner workings of a small Arab society where relatives, fellow party members or extended clan are those employers know and trust to do a job? The report, released Wednesday, said favoritism, nepotism, and misappropriation of public funds were the most widespread aspects of corruption in the Palestinian territories.

Media Bias
Ha'aretz Meets The Soft Bigotry Of Low Expectations, And Still Manages To Fail
I hear so many Americans talk gushingly about Ha'aretz that I always feel a bit like the Grinch Who Stole Christmas whenever I suggest that, despite having some remarkable quality journalists on its staff, Ha'aretz is overall far less "liberal" than its reputation deserves. (I think the exact term I may have used for it in an earlier post was,"collectively and institutionally a piece of propagandizing crap"). And I'm not really won over by the argument that at least it reports things about Israel that the U.S. newspapers won't. I would acknowledge that having an Israeli newspaper that is willing to criticize Israeli policy vis-a-vis the Palestinians does open the door for non-Israelis to enter the debate, just as Jewish Americans who speak up create a space for non-Jews who would otherwise be deterred by fear of the blanket smear of antisemitism. But that doesn't change the fact that "Ha'aretz: It's Less Dreadful On Israel-Palestine Than U.S. News Media!" is not exactly setting the bar very high. Nor does it change the fact that Plucky Little Ha'aretz is perfectly capable of publishing reports that are just as awful on the I/P issue as anything you read over here.

Centrist Zionism
Tzipi Livni, another so-called centrist, holds similar discriminatory views. On January 23, 2002, she urged members of the Knesset to reject an equal-protection clause according to which equality is the right of every citizen in the state regardless of his or her nationality, religion, or views. The proposed bill was rejected, and formal equality remains outside the Israeli book of laws. Livni also supported bills in the Knesset that would grant settlement and allocation of land for Jews only, such as the one submitted by MK Rabbi Haim Druckman on February 18, 2002. Finally, she repeatedly argued that Israel will never be the national home for its Palestinian citizens and averred that, if they have a collective aspiration, they should look for it elsewhere.

We Tried to Get at Nasrallah
In a weekend interview with Channel Two, former IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz confirmed that Israel had attempted to kill Hizbullah chief terrorist Hassan Nasrallah. "We tried to get to him, but couldn't find him. I personally cannot accept that he is still free to shuttle between his bunker and his tunnels. There's no question that we would have had a great feeling if he had not survived the war, but there is no person who cannot be replaced," Halutz said. Halutz also said that he saw "his" war in Lebanon as more successful than Operation Cast Lead. "I don't want to judge the effectiveness of Operation Cast Lead, but the fact that the rockets from Gaza continued to fall the very next day – as opposed to what happened in Lebanon – casts a question mark on whether we should have stopped the war at the point we did. Not one rocket has been fired at Israel by Hizbullah since the end of the Lebanon war," he said.

Some 335 Iraqis lost their lives to violence last month, according to an independent Iraqi human rights group. The group said altogether more than 1,700 Iraqis were either killed or maimed in April which it described as the bloodiest since September 2008 in which 444 Iraqis were killed. Iraq bloodshed rises as US allies defect
IRAQ is threatened by a new wave of sectarian violence as members of the "Sons of Iraq" – the Sunni Awakening militias that were paid by the US to fight Al-Qaeda – begin to rejoin the insurgency. If the spike in violence continues, it could affect President Barack Obama's pledge to withdraw all combat troops from Iraqi cities by the end of June. All US troops are due to leave the country by 2012.

Combat Operations in Fallujah
Indicative of the rapidly deteriorating situation in Iraq, on May 1 the US military reported the death of a Naval petty officer who was killed "on April 30 while conducting combat operations in Fallujah, Iraq." The Department of Defense report went on to explain that the sailor "was deployed with an East Coast based Navy SEAL team." That same day, the military announced the deaths of two marines "killed while conducting combat operations against enemy forces here April 30." The dateline for the latter press release is "AL ANBAR PROVINCE, Iraq." Apparently, all is not well in Fallujah and al-Anbar province. The US military, having met the fiercest resistance throughout their occupation of Iraq in these areas, is once again conducting combat operations there.

Moderate Arab...torturers
As more videotapes emerge documenting the torture inflicted on numerous victims by Sheikh Issa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, a prince of the United Arab Emirates, the controversy is beginning to jeopardize the UAE's relationship with the United States, a country that absolutely loathes torture and demands real accountability for those who do it:". It will not jeopardize any relations with anything. One arms sale to UAE will calm the waters. And notice that none of the American press coverage of the matter say a word of the extent of the story among Arabs: on internet sites and email messages and in all manners of communication that are outside of the control of Arab oppressors.
