More About Chia, pt 3
No other food is as nutritionally complete as Chia. Below are some reasons to make Chia a part of your regular diet.
Athletic Performance
Chia provides the nutrients the body needs to improve physical performance. Chia can be consumed by all athletes, but the effects are most noticeable in sports where you are pushing yourself to the limits, such as cycling, marathon, and cross country.

Placed in water, the seeds absorb up to nine times its weight in water and form it into a gel. The gel slows the release of carbohydrates and its conversion into sugar for energy. When drank, this it will keep you hydrated and hold electrolytes longer in your body fluids. It works much better than plain water or any other known sports drink, and it's also all-natural.

Chia is also very high in antioxidants. Athletes in endurance sports and strength training experience a lot oxidative stress, which can limit aerobic capacity and damage cells. Foods that are high in antioxidants promote the integrity of cell membranes which allow oxygen to be more efficiently and effectively carried to the working muscles.
Weight Loss
Numerous dieting methods out there deprive your body of the nutrition it needs. You may only experience some success with these diets and they don't last. In some cases, they can even be detrimental to your health.

Chia is a dieter's dream food. It is a powerful aid in weight loss. When soaked, chia will hold up to nine times it weight in liquid in form of a gel. Consumed, it makes you feel full (due to the water weight) but it also provides you the nutrients you need. Inside your body, the gel serves as a barrier between carbohydrates and the enzymes that break them down. It causes the carbohydrates to be digested slowly and uniformly.

Want to put it to the test? Try this little experiment: Mix two tablespoons of chia in a 12 ounce serving of fresh fruit juice. Let it sit for thirty minutes until the seeds have formed the gel. Drink this in place of an entire meal. If you feel it wasn't enough, try 3 tablespoons the next time around.
Strong Bones
When you say calcium, most people think milk.

However, according to the American Gastroenterological Association, cow's milk is the top cause of food allergies in babies and children. Millions in America are lactose-intolerant. Approximately 80 percent of all African-Americans, 100 percent of Native Americans and Asian-Americans suffer from the condition. Symptoms of which include rashes, bloating, cramps, headaches, asthma, or vomiting.

Even worse, milk is also suspected to be responsible for juvenile diabetes – which can lead to blindness and other serious conditions. Also, some studies linked autism and schizophrenia in children to the body's inability to digest milk protein casein. When milk was removed from their diets, symptoms in 80 percent of children diminished or disappeared.

Former director of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Frank Oski stated that "There is no reason to drink cow's milk at any time in your life. It was designed for calves…" Research, together with clinical experience, is forcing doctors and nutritionists to reconsider this recommendation.

Also, Dr. Jolieke C. van der Pols, of the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, may have found a link between high dairy intake in childhood and increased cancer risk. For 65 years, 5,000 individuals were followed. Those from families who consumed the highest amount of dairy (2 cups everyday) are three times more likely to get colorectal cancer compared with individuals from families who had the lowest intake.

A better alternative food source of calcium than milk is … you guessed it: chia. In general, chia NATURALLY contains over 5 times of calcium than milk. This makes chia a great source of calcium for people who are lactose intolerant and vegans. In addition to its high calcium content, chia contains boron which is a mineral that serves as a catalyst allowing your body to absorb more calcium.
Optimum Brain Health
Chia is the richest known dietary source of Omega 3 fatty acids.

Plenty of research indicates that foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids enhance the health and development of the brain. A benefit of omega 3 fatty acids is helping the brain repair damage by promoting growth of neurons. According to Dr. David Horrobin, a key figure in fatty acid research, omega 3 fatty acids comprise approximately eight percent of the average human brain.

Omega 3s helps repair brain damage by stimulating neuronal growth. A six month study was held involving persons with Huntington's disease and Schizophrenia. One group was treated with EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid - an Omega 3 fatty acid) and the other with a placebo. The placebo group lost cerebral tissue, while the group given EPA experienced a significant increase of white and grey matter.

Professor of Medicine and Neurology Greg Cole at UCLA reported that DHA (docosahexaenoic acid, an Omega 3-fatty acid), deters Alzheimer's. DHA stimulates the production of a protein called LR11 that destroys beta amyloid that is toxic to neurons in the brain, causing Alzheimer's.

Researchers from Laval University in Quebec City, Canada linked the prevention of Parkinson's disease to sufficient DHA in the brain.

More studies are being conducted to learn more about the positive effects of Omega 3 on brain function, and its potential in treating various psychological disorders such as bipolar disorder and autism.
Pregnancy
Chia is an ideal food for mothers and their babies.

Experts recommend that pregnant and breast-feeding women eat fish on a regular basis because of its benefits for the brain development of their infants. However, this is contradictory to U.S. government warnings saying that trace amounts of mercury from seafood may be harmful to the fetuses' nervous system.

Although a group of obstetricians and nutritionists stated that the threat of mercury is only theoretical, the warnings from the government manage to scare off many expectant mothers from eating fish, denying their babies the much needed omega-3 fatty acids that are known to promote healthy brain development.

Whether or not the threat is real, the good news is that there is a better alternative: chia. Chia is the richest, non-marine food source of omega 3 fatty acids. The risk of poisoning is non-existent. Among the advantages of chia over fish is the absence of fishy taste (which some may get tired of) and also it is very high in protein which is especially important for pregnant women.

Mother who consume enough Omega-3s are also found to be less likely to suffer from post partum depression or mood change, and are able to more quickly recover after pregnancy.

Women in pregnancy are known to be very picky when it comes to food. A good aspect of chia is that it very easily integrates into all their foods due its lack of flavor and ability to "blend in" – you can add it to virtually any food or beverage and experience no change in taste, yet have all its health benefits.
