Subject: [contribute] Do not call 1984 anti Sikh riots, Mr. Prime Minister. It was a massacre of hapless Sikhs who were vastly outnumbered to offer any resistance

According to a news item in the Times of India dated the 11th May, 2009, describing 1984 anti-Sikh riots as a "painful" episode, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday said the issue cannot be kept alive for ever and some people were raking it up for their vested interests.

He also disapproved of some of his partymen seeking votes in Punjab in the name of a "Sikh prime minister", saying religion should not be mixed with politics and that he was an Indian first.

To a question of 1984 anti-Sikh riots, Singh said at a press conference that it was a "painful episode. But it cannot be kept alive for ever."

After the UPA government came to power in 2004, he said, it had reviewed the cases and enhanced compensation for the victims.

"Par kuch log apni dukan chamkane ke liye is kisse ko hamesha ke liye zinda rakhna chahte hei. Is se na to desh ko koi faida hei na Sikh community ko (Some people want to keep this issue alive for their vested interests. It is not going to help either the country or the Sikh community)," he said.

On his party seeking votes in Punjab in the name of a "Sikh prime minister", Singh said, "I sincerely believe that religion should not be brought into political matters. I have not authorised anybody to use my name. I am an Indian first.

"I am Prime Minister of India and I represent all sections of the Indian people. Therefore, I do not think in terms of Sikhs and non Sikhs," he said.

Only wearer knows where the shoe pinches. Had Dr. Manmohan Singh lost his near and dear ones in 1984 then he would not be talking in this tone. Moreover, the Prime Minister must realise that riots are where two communities fight each other but it is wrong to call 1984 anti Sikh riots as Sikhs were a microscopic minority and were vastly outnumbered. It was a plain case of massacre of Sikhs in 1984. You can call Gujarat riots because Muslims also killed Hindus in those riots but in the case of Sikhs, they were butchered mercilessly. Moreover, one has to set a limit. Going by what the Prime Minister says, one day he would say that the case of attack on Parliament is also too old and so we should forget about it and set Afzal Guru free. That would make him get Muslim votes also. Prime Minister says that he does not think in terms of Sikhs. He is very much right. He only thinks in terms of Muslims and says that Muslims had first right on country's
resources. His love for Muslims is all encompassing because he knows that Muslim votes matter but Sikh votes do not matter. Why does not he close Bhagalpur riots case or Bombay riots case? These are also very old but he cannot act in a manner that would offend Muslims. Muslims matter while poor Sikhs do not matter.

He does not want to mix religion with politics then why does he say that Muslims have first right over country's resources? He needs to give a proper answer to the Nation. He should specify the period after which the case relating to riots should be closed and should stop appeasing the Muslims.
